This is so typical of when two different cultures get together and neither understands the other nor have they taken the time to study the culture of the other. In the Japanese culture the relationship is 95% of the deal. This Michael, American manager, obviously is totally ignorant to that and is missing all the signs like "Where's Roger", "What is he doing now?" and Niko wanting to talk about personal things (sushi and eel) so he could know Michael better. Poor Niko must have really been put off that Michael had only scheduled the meeting for about 15 minutes after Niko had travelled 8 hours and was expecting to meet with Roger, a person that had become a friend. A great deal of the responsibility this situation turned out the way is did also lies wwith the company who apparently did not understand anything about culture or cultural differences and they just threw an American Sales Manager into the mix at the last minute.
This case study only reflects a situation where the company is in dire need of a contract with the potential client, the Japanese. If it is the other way round, when the Japanese needs the contract, he would not act the way he did. To have a balance, let's see the roles switched and the interest moderated. However, the lesson here is being sensitive to the other party; sometimes, closing a deal requires sharp-sharp approach but then at other times, to close the deal, you get to walk a social and sometimes less formal route with the other party. It just depends on your feelers
