I’m not a fan of war, especially indiscriminate bombing of families (“collateral damage”) via drones, but I would go fight in a heartbeat to defend our country. I don’t agree with our wars in Vietnam, Iraq and all the covert operations in South and Central America.
However, I would be the first to sign up to fight in WW2 or in Afghanistan after 911. Not all wars are the same, so spread your blame and your praise appropriately.

Note that WW2 could have been averted also, and people knew it at the time. European (and Asian) antifa fought to prevent the rise of fascism (Spanish Civil War, Antifa vs. Fash street battles all over the place) in the inter-war years, but of course the liberal capitalist governments weren't entirely certain that fascists were that bad, and the USSR didn't trust any leftist movements they didn't control.

Both of them have such a hard on for america and their patriotism and the brainwashing of "we're the best" "we're the good guys" and "we're fighting the evil doers" with zero critical analyses of the situation. This is not to say that I wholly disagree with them, just that they seem to do a disservice by only providing surface level analyses to a complex issue with deep roots and ugly parts where America, Canada (my country), and the rest of the "western" world were clearly the "bad" guys and "evil" doers, or at least complicit in the "evil" that created these terrorist cells we fight today.

Iraq had an authoritarian despot who participated and encouraged in Secret police, state terrorism, torture, mass murder, genocide, ethnic cleansing, rape, deportations, extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, assassinations, chemical warfare.
Today they have a democratically elected leader.
Get off your contrarian high-horse. Terrorist cells existed before the US entered Iraq and will persist forever.
You don't get to blame the US for going in there and shooting the guy who has a boot on the throat of the population. You act like the US created these people when it was the oppression by Saddam which you seem in favour which was what kept them contained.
Getting the boot off innocent's necks' also got the boot off terrorist's necks.

    Why we fight in Afghanistan:
Afghanistan has over 1,400 mineral fields, containing barite, chromite, coal, copper, gold, iron ore, lead, natural gas, petroleum, precious and semi-precious stones, salt, sulfur, talc, and zinc, among many other minerals. Gemstones include high-quality emerald, lapis lazuli, red garnet and ruby. " I hope one say you can bring your family here on vacation" that almost made me cry... what alot of people.dont understand is we soldiers we aren't fighting for the politicians.. oil rights etc etc.. most soldiers are fighting for two things.. to provide for our families and to make the world a better place... there's more brotherhood and camaraderie than anything. And you get overseas and you work with these individuals that want the "American Dream" just like our ancestors wanted when they fought for our country. This is the part the news never shows. We made brothers and sisters overseas.. and all they want is the same thing all of us want back here at home.

I super wish I could remember the name of the researcher, and he probably isnt that hard to find. I watched a Ted Talk in which he talked about his entire career being focused on the psychological impact of military training and combat.
He stated, after a career of research, that a higher risk of suicide once military men enter back into society is not linked to combat experience. He said that the correlation with higher suicide tendencies begins in TRAINING. Being militarily trained unfortunately means that you are statistically more likely to commit suicide.
I'll just never forget how that made me feel. These people are set up for a life of hardship from the get-go. These people give up everything to serve and protect us. I'm so thankful for all of our service men and women.

His family had a successful farm, and he was able to afford to go to college, but definitely the poorest of the 20th century anyway. For someone who truly started from NOTHING, you might have to look all the way back to Andrew Jackson? Depends on your definition of nothing, I suppose, but definitely not in most people's lifetimes has anyone achieved that. edit: I forgot Lincoln, he PROBABLY qualifies as "starting from nothing" according to most definitions, but Jackson is the last one who I think absolutely NOBODY could dispute started from the bottom of society and rose to the top.
