Wrong. Tsunami waves cross deep water at up to 400 miles an hour but are less than a meter high - that's why ships at sea are safe, and why boat owners during a tsunami warning try to take their boats out to sea, When the waves reach shore, the shallow depth forces their energy upward, increasing the height. The shape of the coastline and the slope of the shoreline seabed also influence height.
What I can't understand is why some blithely ignore the danger and either stand transfixed on the shoreline or get in their cars and drive towards it. It's not as though there is a single adult in Japan ignorant of the fact that Tsunami follows Earthquake.
@@Biffo1262 I agree with you but it’s easier to say that when we weren’t there. It doesn't look bad at the begging but that wave is around 15 meters it sure hard to see its true size from this distance. Will their new sea wall protect them better the next time?
That town was extraordinarily lucky. Because the wave was travelling parallel to the shore it caused basically no damage at all although a number of boats were battered and some sunk, but not a drop in the town that I could see.
Actually that's where you're wrong the earthquake was so powerful that the country dropped a metre in hight so the country now sits a metre lower than what it did before so the defence walls dropped but defence walls arnt still enough to stop a flow of water like this not a chance
It's strange; you know the water's moving fast, yet it seems to take a long time to move across the bay, or to come ashore. I've thought that in other tsunami videos too.
That's true but for some cases, the wall was high enough but the earthquake was so strong that it had sank Japan by a meter. In some places, the tsunami was ten meters ; so was the seawall but the water went over anyway. The only known place where the seawall saved the community was Fudai but only because the seawall was 51 feet tall.
All those walls did a very good job in lots of earlier -smaller- tsunamis. For these 10 to 16 meter monsters even Japan was underprepared. There are limits to what a country can do, allthough lots of life was saved thanks to Japans constant safety drills and evacuation plans.

Despite knowing that a tsunami was forecast, people still left cars down by the harbour instead of driving them to high ground, out of the danger zone. I suspect that many believed that the much publicised sea defence network would protect the coastal communities...
This was heartbreaking, so many lost their lives, many more lost homes and businesses, it's horrifying to watch but one of those things where you can't look away and I feel for all those who died and hope they are at peace. One thing I have to say, I seen others say it and I know it's a tad inappropriate given the circumstances but some of the noises this guy makes, you can't help but think that he was in the middle of getting a little something!
Maybe he had a broken leg or arm! Maybe he was bleeding from a deep laceration or he had a Concussion! His friends were very concerned!get your head out of the Gutter!
I'm truly sorry and I'm praying for all effected by this horrible disasters but on a lighter note am I the only one listening to the cameraman. He sound like he's in the middle of receiving some special attention. 0-7:00. Lol!
7:56 So you really think somethings going on where he’s standing with the sound of kids in back ground right in public view??? Really 🤔 maybe your right but I doubt it!
Watching this in the super low resolution and all the noises he was making the moaning an grunting made it difficult. Especially after the 6 Minute mark.. But this was a very sad day for Japan a lot of loss a lot of cities wiped off the map.. but I know the Japanese are very very strong people that will/have bounce back strong.. but it proves that no matter how much technology we have or how smart we think we are Mother Nature will not be topped stopped or dropped..
You can adjust the resolution on your end. You can also turn your volume down so that you don't have to listen to the man's "grunting and moaning", which, btw, is a pretty horrible way to describe someone's fear and grief. Do you complain about people crying at funerals, too?

that's how japanese people make verbal reactions to things. they often say AAAHH!! or WAAAHHH?!?! or even OOOAHH?! it's really no different from other languages, such as english making HUH? or WHOA!! noises.
What I noticed about all these videos is the fact that all the higher ground escape routes are almost impossible to climb because they are very steep for most people to climb up to especially the elderly and children even for average people ... once reaching assumed safety most locations do not have any shelter equipped to handle large number of people and to keep them warm during very cold weather conditions ... all roofs should have been shelters all high level observation points should be covered with shelter ... etc Japanese spend fortunes on golf, delicacy foods, and other but not on things that could have saved many more lives than that they lost
The gasps of chi as it starts... Slow motion real time sorrow. We must respect this earth. The horror of this day. Agony. And it was just beginning. Fukashima still looms over the world.
Too bad all the stupid zooms that bring nothing, he just had to put his smartphone down in the direction of the port and wait, no interest in filming waves that far
Agreed. Sadly, anyone who buys a camera can call himself a photographer if he likes. It takes a lot of training and experience to understand what's involved in doing it properly. But, this is an amateur with a camera and he did his best without having a photographers true "eye" for capturing what's most important at any time. But we've seen worse. At least it didn't look like he tied his camera to a rope and let it swing around. And of course, deep condolences to all the people in Japan affected or injured by this awful geologic and "harbor wave" event. Wishing well to them all.
I am very struck by the reddish stripe seen on the horizon, is it the radiation from the nuclear power plant? OMG how many disasters have been endured by the Japanese people, my deep respect for them
12 mins into the video, and I can already tell the cameraman is a real ‘weenie’, filming everything he should not be filming.
Getting what Maria??
Maybe he had a broken leg or arm! Maybe he was bleeding from a deep laceration or he had a Concussion! His friends were very concerned!get your head out of the Gutter!
There's no safe place to live on this Planet. We are just visitors here. The World is in charge. God Bless them all!
I hope the insurance companies paid out fairly and quickly.
Red Rooster yeah right this probably put some company’s out of business
Not sure Japan has the same type of home insurance coverage like the US
Insurance doesn't cover acts of God.
E quem não tinha seguro?
In the uk even if you have insurance it would not cover things like this, it's called an act of god. Don't know about other countries.

Anyone know what that red glow out at sea is at 39:14
That's the sun. Sunset.
You get a ton of time to build your defenses, but when it hits you have to do with what you have built.
that's how japanese people make verbal reactions to things. they often say AAAHH!! or WAAAHHH?!?! or even OOOAHH?! it's really no different from other languages, such as english making HUH? or WHOA!! noises.
I at first was wondering if he had a girlfriend with him at the time of filming........
@@petermcgreevy6386 you naughty boy
Was that a second independent tsunami? Or a reflection of the first off the bay coastline?
2nd wave. Tsunamis always have multiple waves and the 2nd is always the strongest and highest.

"Please replace the battery pack"

Tsunami is slower then i puncture but the devastation its not the 100' wave its like 20 mile washer machean of 20' waves of stuff and water
This was a bay near Tokyo, with lesser impact than other places.

Wheres the Tsunami warning.
I do t hear anything, and why are people still down there. Why are they not moving out

I'm sorry this guy's breathing is starting to freak me out a little bit
And how would you be breathing watching your fishing boat be destroyed ?
The gasps of chi as it starts... Slow motion real time sorrow. We must respect this earth. The horror of this day. Agony. And it was just beginning. Fukashima still looms over the world.
We must respect the Earth? What does that even mean in response to a video clip about a tsunami?

Wishing well to them all.
spoiler alert: a few smaller p-waves before the video freezes at about 45:00
