- Grow your own espalier plum tree! This episode I am pruning my mariposa plum tree! If you have an interest in gardening, and a small space to trellis a fruit tree, an espalier plum could be the tree for you. This episode is all about managing an espalier plum tree, trellising, pruning and harvesting. Plums are very hardy - and they're delicious! Try a plum salad. This isn't a low maintenance choice but it is wonderfully fun if you have the time.

Yummm... I do love a plum... loved this too.
Will have to watch again as there's lots of your quirky addins that are a delight. Oh, and Good ood to see Harry's ball didn't miss sneaking in its cameo. 😄
Thanks 🙏 - Harry and that ball - every time I garden!
Thanks for that 😊 everyone is telling me, nah, you shouldn't espalier a plum. You've got to fan train it... But, I like espalier trees. They're the best !! Greetings from Anglia.
@@northfolk6991 thank you - all the best for it - great fun
Love espalier ❤
I have just discovered your channel 😊 ...your videos are SO wonderful! I am a fellow Canberra based organic gardener and I LOVE and appreciate all of your fabulous information 🙏🙂
Thank you - Canberra environment comes with its challenges- how about all this rain though!
Hi Robyn
Are these dwarf espallier varieties or regular standard trees ?
I like the aesthetic look of really old trees especially when dormant with twisting limbs and big knuckled spurs Knowing the dwarf life is only 15-20 years and even considering the early fruiting scenario I would still prioritize standard trees.
@@kevinjuggins3270 hi yes I live the big old trees too - maybe my next garden - I just looked at the tag for the plum Mariposa and it doesn't even mention rootstock. I didn't think about this when I purchased it back in the day. None of my pears are on dwarf root stock either I don't think it matters - maybe makes the tree more vigorous- more pruning maybe
Same with me
They recommend dwarf Rootstock so the vigor can be controlled and maintained but it seems a shame to put so much into a tree and then have to replace it too soon.
Id rather put the extra maintenance in.
The main consideration I guess is
- The Aesthetic look and Aura of a 50 year old tree but having to wait 7 or 8 years for initial fruit harvesting
Versus
- Getting a M9 or M27 graft - rootstock and in doing so you receive fruit in 3 years but the tree finishes fruiting early and lives shorter
Something to contemplate for buyers I guess
Harikasın tebrikler yanındayız 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
