The FORGOTTEN Lure You Need To TRY! (Epic Day Of Old School Bass Fishing!!)

  • We're spending an entire day fishing an old school technique that has all but been forgotten! Come along for an awesome day of grubbing for Smallmouth in a clear water fishery! We're swimming grubs on light line and even adapting it to modern BFS gear for even more fun!!
The single tail grub is about as retro as it gets. Young anglers have no idea how to do it, older anglers around about to wonder why they stopped using them! The concept is simple, the gear is cheap, and the fish catching ability is amazing! Let's go grubbing!
Below you'll find links to the grubs and other gear we used throughout the day. We've included all our favorite colors, sizes, components, etc... as well as the rod and reel combos we fished them with. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

@tacticalbassin Matt buddy, I have learned so much from Tim and you over the years. But wow, is it gratifying to see that such a smart elite modern angler like you can still smash bass with techniques I have employed since I was a kid in the 80's. Old tricks still work with new dogs, and it's awesome to see!🤜🏻🤛🏻

Another great honorable mention grub for Great Lakes smallmouth is the Powerbait 4-inch Power Grub. If you REALLY want to kick it old school, go with original Pumpkinseed, that brown with black flake DESTROYS, but it's almost as forgotten as the grub itself.

Swimming a 2" mr. twister curly tail was the first way I learned how to catch bass consistently. Still fish with curly tails today, catches anything that swims. It's a timeless technique.

I can't tell you how many hundreds, if not thousands of fish I've caught on a grub. That's a secret little weapon of mine. I usually use them for fishing for walleye but I've definitely tangled with some nice bass and everything else. My largest northern pike ever came on one. I love em. They also work really well for inshore fishing for flounder and trout. Great video guys.

If I were stranded somewhere and could only have one bait, the grub is it! Slow roll, faster retrieve, hop, creep across bottom... one way or the other, it will ALWAYS work. And catches literally everything from walleye to any strain of bass, crappie, catfish. Any time of year. Truly a meat getter!

I really enjoyed this video. It made me feel old, but not in a bad way! It's funny, some older baits, like hair jigs and blade baits, seem to never have gone out of fashion. Others you rarely hear about. I still fish grubs all the time. I also fish inline spinners, the old F series rapala minnows, mud bugs, jitterbugs, twin spins, silver minnow spoons, and do well enough to keep throwing them. They are probably not always ideal, but there are certain situations where I will reach for an inline spinner or silver minnow, not out of nostalgia, but because my experience has taught me that it is genuinely the best tool in that particular situation.

I start breaking down a new lake in the morning- already got the truck packed and ready. Just got to get some sleep now- I have trouble sleeping when I know I'm going fish the next morning- I'm excited. It's aggravating, but the day it stops is the day I probably stop- that's what it's all about- the excitement, anticipation, getting on the water right before the sun comes up. Sometimes it looks like you're sitting on a big piece of glass- hard to tell where the water stops, and the sky starts. I love watching the dragon flies skim the surface- and that rice crispies noise you hear from the mats- time to get the frog out. LOL- Last season I was sitting out there at sunup- working my frog- hadn't been bitten all morning and was sort of half asleep- BOOM! one blew up on my frog right by the boat- I kayak fish- splashed water in my face. I missed the fish but- still a cool way to be woke up huh? Got get some sleep- wish me luck fellas.....

@@tacticalbassin Thanks- I got 2 but- more importantly- I found the fish. Had a really hard time getting them to bite, but I found them. That's the important part- now to figure out what they want to eat. Never seen bass so picky as these- I threw wacky rigs, ned rigs. spinners., swim baits, shaky heads, T-rigs- nothing. They acted like they were scared of it. I finally got a couple to hit a popper but- that was it.

My biggest smallmouth to date (7 lbs 3 oz) came out of lake Erie on a 4" grub on a 3/16 oz ball head. Its really one of my favorite things to throw here because no one does it anymore.

I’m really glad you touched on the softer bait having better action in the colder water. I bought several packs of Kalin’s and threw them at my local pond last winter. I didn’t catch any fish but switched to an easy shiner on the same ball head and started smashing them. I’m going to give the Kalin’s another shot this weekend in this hot summer water.

Matt, great video. I still remember fishing with the original grub - the Mister Twister - back in the 1970s and early 80s. I found Mister Twisters come back out recently at started occasionally throwing them a couple of years ago and have also used Yamamoto single and double tail grubs - all work great. It brings back memories of old-school baits like jitterbugs and hula poppers 😉

Great content been fishing Grubs since they first came out, still catching fish on them.
    Also...
I love Dogs have had numerous dogs in my life. However, I just don't understand why people bring Dogs on Boats filled with Hooks on expensive Rods.
One of my Fishing Buddies Dog got a self inflicted face full of Treble Hooks and went ballistic breaking 3 or 4 G.Loomis Rods and knocked another 2 or 3 in the water before he was able to hold her down and remove the Hooks!
Dog was OK. However, his tackle took a several thousand dollar hit.
He loves his Dog. But, he doesn't take her on the boat anymore unless it's just for a boat ride with no gear on deck !
    Tough lesson learned...
    Robert

It's a mistake to limit the grub to a swimming retrieve. I've always found it even more effective on a bottom bouncing/dragging retrieve. I would often alternate between a bottom hoping retrieve and a swimming retrieve back in the day, and there were plenty of days that I never picked up another style lure, because I just kept catching them on the grub.

Back in the day we were taught to rig the 3 and 4” Yamamoto grubs with the tail down to prevent fouling the hook. Not sure if that really made a difference though. Wish they bring back the 3” crappie series

Hi Matt, I remember fishing grubs way back in Early 80s. I like your idea of Show casing some old school lures. I found an old box of "Flying Lures" Be happy to give you those to try.
Well, additionally, i'm fighting back against that cancer. Treatments are making it unable to fish anymore "for now".
Put my Z21 Up for sale as I was only able to To use it about ten times Since I bought it 3 years ago. Anyway, I love your show Continue to pray for me.
Hey what about roland martin's helicopter lure. Heck I don't know anybody who's ever fished it.

Fished both the flying lure actually worked. The helicopter lure wasn't successful. Love Roland but not his helicopter lure lol. Keep fighting and you'll be back on the water.

    Hey Matt,
Back in the day, it was always recommended to rig it with the curl in the opposite direction of the hook so that when it's casted, it doesn't get hooked on itself. Can you share why you suggest the opposite?
    Great video, as always 🤙❤️

Agreed, rigging the grub tail to curl in the opposite direction of the hook bend was an Al Lindner/In-Fisherman recommendation from back in tbe day.👍🏻🎣🙌🏻

This is simple the way we've always done it and it works well. I've seen both done, just never seen a reason to switch. One benefit, particularly with the longer tails, is the hook is more inline with the tail and less likely to have a short strike.

Do a series on forgotten techniques like split shotting Texas rig Carolina rig deep cranking like Paul Ellias “kneeling and reeling”, “bumping the bark” spinnerbait fishing that Ken Cook these two came up with to win Bassmasters tournaments with,

We fished the grubs by flipping them in brush just like a worm or jig. They were an under sized Twister worm to us. Here in Texas you had to stand in line to get twister worms they were the sensation . They were so scarce we would light a cig so we could weld them back together when they were torn.

Thought grabbing your rod above the handle on the shaft makes it easier to break... Just see Matt do it quite often with really pricey rods ever break one?

Looks like northern Michigan. It’s amazing how them smallies eat better with chop on the water StClair is always better with the wind blowing. With that smallmouth spitting up a crayfish it makes me wonder if a tube would have been better.

Matt that darter head with a kalins grub was the deal for 30 years for me .(put a big red glass bead on that thing if your shallow) But the boot tail catches bigger fish hands down thats why i switched ten years ago.I have used the bead rig all summer because of preasure and you are correct the fish have never seen it and kill it.

Matt the bead on a grub or fluke type bait looks like gills or blood. It gives just enough weight to glide your bait .You have given me years of tips.this one is big trust me. @@tacticalbassin
