- Welcome back to our Overlanding 101 series! Today we take you on a full day with us, from the moment we wake up until we go to sleep. Join us and see what it is like to overland full-time as a family.
We go over our morning routine, breaking down camp, tackling our day, finding a new spot to camp, setting up camp, and our evening routine.

🌎 Who we are and what we’re doing:
We’re Eric + Brittany + Caspian Highland, and we’re getting ready to drive around the world! June-August 2021, we completed our Jeep Gladiator build. Now we’re in our shakedown period. By early October, we hope to cross the southern border into Mexico. Over the next 10-15 years, we intend to drive through all six habitable continents on the planet. We started traveling full-time in February 2014 and have never looked back.

I expected a peek into the more technical or logistical parts of traveling throughout your day but was pleasantly surprised by everything else this video covered! It really highlighted your personalities well - especially Caspian’s.

What a magical charmed life for Caspian. Your interactions with Caspian remind me of the time when my daughter was his age. She is now 28yrs old. Lol Each time we get together that closeness gets stronger no matter how many miles apart we are.

Bring a bathing suit and allow some time to do the public hot springs in Ouray. Also if you are driving through Montrose on the way there, try and time to do breakfast at Starvin Arvin’s and get a plate that includes their cinnamon roll. It is well worth the stop. Aslan! Love the name!. Though we are a Christian family and are huge fans of C.S. Lewis' work, believe it or not, Caspian Theodore was named after the Caspian Sea and Theodore Roosevelt. I was a sailor my whole life and wanted to name our son after a body of water. President Roosevelt (though imperfect like all of us) did much to improve much of what we love of America and he was pretty unstoppable. So we're big fans. All that to say, thank you! And as far as homeschool curriculum, He just turned 5 at the beginning of December, so we don't really have a lot of curriculum. He has a math book, and a writing book, (both 1st grade level) and we spend a lot of time reading with him. Mostly we currently use the things he is curious about to teach him the basics of the core subjects. So if he is fascinated by ants for example. We spend time looking at them, talking about them, watching videos about them, reading about them, and then transition that into math. For example, "Hey Caspian, did you know that ants can carry ten times their own weight?" To which he'll ask, "What does that mean?" we'll respond with a quick lesson in math that is really about ants to him so he gets it and retains it. We do this type of teaching every day with him based on what he's currently curious about. Hope that helps! ~ Eric

Will be coming from Oregon and taking skyline drive overland from Price Utah All the Way South through Capitol reef and Zion with a short stop at Toroweap point along the Grand canyon. It was great meeting you all at RVE Summit! Thanks for the hard work you put into your videos. I'm curious how or if you stay connected to a faith community or church on the road, especially since you'll be overlanding for a long time. A local church could change dramatically in that amount of time as people leave or new people join the church. Do you have an online community or close Christian friends that you stay in touch with?
Great question Teri, and super nice meeting you too. So we’ve learned over our years of fulltime travel that we literally have family everywhere we go. It is an incredible thing to travel and connect with other Christians in whatever part of the world we happen to be in. We get a pretty unique and holistic view of what the church is like. On our global journey we look to expand that understanding on a whole new level. But we are members of a church in Austin, Texas and have been for years. They have online sermons for when we can’t physically get to a gathering or service. Really great church. Look up The We’ll Austin and check out one of the services. We are so blessed to be members of that body. ~ Eric

I thought about that too - how cool it'd be to see the global church, or at least a larger piece of it. Not everyone does things the same as we do in the US. I think it'd be a very enriching experience to learn from other Christians with different backgrounds than mine and get a greater sense of what's happening in the global church. Another great observation CJ. The short answer to your question is yes, I could do it by myself but not easily. Bringing the tent down solo is not a problem, but latching it can require some strength. Though my understanding is that it gets easier after the unit is broken in a bit more. Though we full-time, we’ve only spent some 35 nights in this unit so it is barely getting broken in. Hope that helps! ~ Eric

I’m really considering getting one of these on my Gladiator so I’m curious before I invest all this money, as a solo overland traveler majority of the time can I climb on top of tent and possibly push the latch down? Or is there an alternate option in latching? Does Brittany feel she’d be unable to close the tent on her own?

So we are currently in Cortez, CO. We’ll be heading West today toward Bluff, UT. Eventually we’ll make our way most likely towards Page, AZ and eventually to Flagstaff for Overland Expo West. Will you be at that event? ~ Eric
@@HourlessLife It would be really good to go to Flagstaff but I work on a big farm here in Farmington so we are currently doin 7days 10 hour shifts got to get that winter wheat in the ground before they shut the water off

Greetings Hourless. I really like the way you changed the way the back door opens. I bought the Alu-Cab Canopy Camper and requested to have the same done to mine. Totally makes sense. Initially they said it would be no problem. Now they’re telling me that not only will it leave about 16 holes from the alteration but they will also have to fabricate a bracket for the locking mechanism at the top of the door. Just wanted your knowledge since you have already gone through this. Is this what you experienced when you changed the hinges and the locking mechanism on the back door?
Hi John. Sorry for the delay in response. Our door mechanism is up top now instead of on bottom. It was all professionally done by Juniper Overland with Alu-Cab's input. It isn't factory so it does have some complications, you have to relocate the light, rear camera, and brackets. The biggest issue is the bracket that allows the door to swing open. It only has two points of contact instead of four because of the alteration. But it was totally the right call for us. I don't know anything about open holes. Juniper must have taken care of that. We have no ingress of dust or water. ~ Eric

When you went on the trail with the camp still set up, do you not have to worry about wild animals visiting where you were just eating?
We're typically rather careful about storing things in such a way as to minimize any unwanted encounters. We're not perfect at it, but it is definitely on our minds at camp regarding food and trash. You must always stay aware of your surroundings and do your best to minimize any possible situations. So far for us, so good. ~ Eric

Haha! No. We wish. So far Caspian and I have escaped Montezuma's Revenge, but it hit Brittany for a few days though she's past that now. With no risk there is no reward right? We do our best to make sure we're cautious. But sometimes you just gotta take the chance. Sometimes you pay the price, most times you escape unscathed. ~ Eric

Yes. This is a very important term for all of us to protect our land use. Essentially a disturbed campsite is a place that has been used by someone else to camp before. Ideally we should all be using them whenever possible rather than disturbing a new area. Hope that makes sense! ~ Eric

Hey Josh, it's Brittany. I don't have enough experience with the stove yet to know the answers to the problems! We use white gas, which supposedly burns cleaner than gasoline, and I still get black soot stuff on the bottom of my pans. I wipe off what I can and leave the rest. Sorry I don't have a solution for you! Once I've used it more extensively, I'll be able to share more.
