But then kids happened 🤣🤣
I worked in a Toyota dealership from 1991-2015, and I can tell you that all of what the expert said is 100% accurate. I can also tell you that this example is cleaner than most 5 year Supra's that came into my shop looked like. Check those oil galley's between the cam towers btw, they like to leak. Awesome car sir.
I owned an '87 Supra Turbo in Black with tan interior, Targa roof and a 5 speed standard transmission. My favorite car out of everything I have ever owned. Valve seals went and it was blowing smoke and basically undriveable and I couldn't deal with the cost to fix at the time and had to let it go. Loved that car!
I picked up an 88 NA this week, any thoughts of the difference between the turbo and NA? Sure would have been nice to score a turbo model, but i'm pretty sure they go for a lot more money these days.
Very nice, so clean and pristine! Most teens today wouldn’t understand why those of us born in the 70s/80s like/appreciate these cars so much.. 80s-90s JDM imports were the best!
@@trudeaumustgo1920 Lambos and ferraris have cool engines but their build quality is abysmal. Panel gaps typical of an 80s Ford and interior quality of a typical Tesla. Not too much to get excited over
My mother bought a brand new 1986.5 Supra in candy apple red with candy apple cloth interior not long after becoming an RN. She'd previously had a 69 Firebird and 66 Mustang fastback. Great car but it could never track straight on the road no matter how much money was thrown at it. Always pulled. But some of the best/most comfortable sport seats ever put in a car. Those are real Recaros with terrific power side bolsters and lumbar. My mom got sick of not being able to go anywhere in the winter (snow) with it and sold it in 1995 for a Land Rover Discovery SE7.
What wasn't mentioned in the video is that this Supra is equipped with TEMS (Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension). It allows the driver to select between a softer ride for everyday driving or a stiffer more sporty ride when you're feeling peppy. Some people don't like it and think it's an unnecessary feature that can be rather costly to replace but I enjoyed the feature on my '86 1/2 Supra, my '88 didn't have it and it was missed.
TEMS was good and really worked, Went to high when you either punched the gas or hit the brakes hard. I actually replaced those shocks back it the day when i was young. Not a fun job...and cost a lot for the parts. Made a HUGE difference though..
One of my favourite cars in the earlier Gran Turismo games, easy to find as an affordable second hand and tunable to be usable in "end-game" race series.
In 1987 the main competitor for the Toyota Supra was the Nissan 300ZX, not Porsche. And the 87 Supra has one of the best build engines EVER! It's one of the only engines that you can Sports tune up to 1,000 horsepower without blowing the head gasket.
I had a 1988 Toyota Supra Turbo with the Manual 5 speed and the sport suspension that actually still worked. That car was so much fun to drive, and it really made you feel special. When I was a kid back in the early 90s a friend of mine bought one only a couple of years old and I remember just how cool I felt riding in that car. It might as well have been a Ferrari.
Sweet car! I used to work with a lady back in the mid-90's that had a Celica Supra from the early-80's. She was an older lady that bought it brand new and absolutely loved it.
@@trippydrew8492 The first two generations were called Celica Supra. They became just Supra from the third generation, probably as they became too upmarket relative to the Celica and the Supra moniker was well established by then.
@@enematwatson1357 I have learned something new! The previous generations are a little before my time though so I put my ignorance down to that lol, thanks!
I've just inherited a very early production mark 3 NA supra from my grandfather (July of 1986). He had it for a few years but it eventually became a non-running project. I eventually singled out the starter motor as the issue and spent far too long removing it from the car. The brushes inside were so mangled that no contact to the plunger was being made. One 15 dollar repair kit off EBay later (and some new intake gaskets) and it starts and runs. He passed a few days before I was able to get it to crank again. I spent a lot of time with him in his last weeks while I worked on it. These cars are incredibly important to me. I know this video is a few years old at this point but thank you for bringing some positive attention to them. Aside from a few quirks, these cars are wonderful to work on and gorgeous to boot. Props to the owner for taking such good care of their vehicle.
Beautiful!!! My favorite era Supra, 1987-92. My second favorite color combo here too - my favorite is white with that brown interior color they used to have. I love the interior on these too - those gauges and the ergonomics are absolutely the model of a proper drivers car. Electronic climate control too!!!
I worked in a welding shop in late HS /early college and my boss had one of those (manual trans.) He had me run into town and pick things up in it, do routine stuff on it, etc. That car is amazing, it's actually REALLY comfortable (I'm not very tall) and it's super easy to drive. It was fun but also incredibly driveable. It felt "natural" to drive. Quite a gem there, I'd love to have one.
I had one of these. 7mge non turbo, manual. Just such a cool, fast, comfortable car. They are more muscular to look at in person. Great sound too. It really needed an LSD and a turbo but I still absolutely loved it.
I subscribed less than a year ago and your production quality has already skyrocketed. Your content gets more enjoyable every video, and it's clear that whatever effort you're putting into improve the videos is most certainly working. Keep it up, love the videos!
Mrs. Wizard nailing the location. Wicked cool ride! A co-worker of mine back in 1987 bought one of these new, his was that royal blue color paint and a 5 speed manual, otherwise it matched this car. When I saw his new ride I told him his wife makes WAY TOO MUCH money...cause no way could he afford this. Was over $30k back then. These things are SOOO MUCH fun to drive when sorted!! Lots of fun miles left in this one...especially after leaving the Car Wizard shop!
This video brings back memories of my 1987 Supra. I bought it in 1989 with low miles for around $13K. It was burgundy with the grey velour interior. My parents drove a Camry and the difference between these two cars was like day and night! The Supra was fast and powerful with very fat tires. The long front hood looked great and very sporty. The only problem I ever had with the car was the drag link, as I recall. My favorite spec was burgundy with tan leather and a targa top. Very hard to find.
THAT IS AN AMAZING SUPRA! I mean, I wanted one so bad in 1992 but then, their cost didn't make sense when you could have a V8 Mustang Cobra or GT then, and pocket the difference. Still, that is a really sweet Toyota Supra. Thank you for sharing that and Facetiming with Jared!
I had a 1987 dark blue on blue non-turbo example. I absolutely loved it! My ex four times removed ended up crashing it into a school playground. The fencing surrounding the playground was untouched. She somehow bounded over the 6 foot tall fence and landed about 10 feet shy of a play structure. Luckily, the accident happened in late PM, so no children(or anyone, for that matter) were present. True story!
That is a Beautiful MK3. Jared means 7M ‘BHG’-GTE. But with a new metal gasket it’s fine. Loved the torque compared to the 1JZ we swapped into my ‘87. However the music the 1JZ makes is just incomparable. Can confirm the Wastegate Shim gleefulness!!
@@WillFuI ...just make sure to know the difference between the various 1J’s. Stand-alone ECU is probly the way to go, as well. They’ve gotten pretty reasonable, and potentially makes tuning easier. R154 5-speed Trans is pretty hardy if it hasn’t been abused. And just go ahead and buy a Fluidampr®. Just get one. Then maybe the crank pulley won’t separate while you’re driving around one day.
@@Beer_Dad1975 ...Definitely learned a lot. Although, I think the main downfall of the 7M was poor turbo preparation. The NA was fairly solid. We had one in our families ‘85-ish Cressida. Never remember it being a hassle. Best sound system tho... had a 9 band manual EQ.
@@JoelKreider They were a good engine by the standards of other inline sixes of the time - they just suffered in historic comparison to Toyota's own later effort, and so the narrative is they are "unreliable". I never owned one personally, probably a few years too young, and my Dad hated Japanese cars for some reason - in the 90's and early 00's I owned a 1JZ Chaser, and a 2JZ Soarer though - both fantastic cars. I'm old enough to remember the 80's craze for sliding equalizers though! :-D
I apologize Car Wizard...but while AZ cars tend to not rust, the environment/roads absolutely SANDBLASTS the underside paint and coatings (and windshields believe it or not). Also, things dryrot bad. Really great car! Thank you for sharing it with us.
A mate of mine had one of these. It was absolutely stunning. The air con was impressive because when the engine was cold, it ran in reverse to deliver heat to the cabin and keep windows demisted.
I am sure i have read somewhere that toyota had issues with this engine, headgasket troubles or something (was a while ago i read this) and thats what lead to them overbuilding the 2jz as they wanted to up thier game, which i think we can agree they done. I knew of folk running close to a 1000 bhp on stock internals. Beast of an engine.
That's a gorgeous MK III!!!! I lusted after one of those back in college. Flash forward 30+ years, and I bought my wife a 2020 MK V for our 25th anniversary.
This brings back such happy memories, I had one of these a 1987 model and it was such a great car. Mine was red with a grey interior and was the non-turbo version but even with no turbo it was powerful enough. It was one of the most comfortable cars I have ever owned. I also had a MR2 Mk1 of the same year and that was also a great car. In my opinion this was Toyota at its best.
And this is why so many men under 40 are not playing the dating game anymore due to all the damage goods in their late 20s and to mid 30s that have more issues than a cheap long neglected BMW. When they are that crazy and not even out of high school yet chances are someone will eventually turn up dead someday.
I have owned 2...an '86 1/2 and a '88. Small issue with the head gaskets on both but it was covered by factory recall. Great cars, loved them both and wish I had never let them go. These cars were truly "paradise by the dashboard light"...I had that custom etched on the back side glasses on the 86 1/2.
@@tommoon2700 Yes! Legit a challenge to get a new flywheel! since that 1st comment i've only recently receved the correct flywheel for the 7m to W58 trans....lol smh

Nice to see such a clean MK3 - I have had a 1990 UK car on the drive for a year - needs some TLC after 32 salty winters. It is an 7M-GE NA 5-speed hardtop, no engine mods. Plan to bring it back from the brink, and this video is a great reference on how it should be. I also previously owned an auto 1G-GTE Twin Turbo, targa top - a bit too much lag and not enough torque on the 2 litre for the wieght of the car, but great for a top down cruise.

"But it's not manu-" I own a Supra, and you don't. Get outta here.
the only issue ive had with my auto is it sucks ass. the transmission response is super poor. though i think theres a reason to that im just not sure what it is
Been working on these since the 90s and never heard of the coil pack cover called Brigs and Stratton cover..
Upgrade path:
MHG and ARP studs
RC 550cc injectors
Walbro fuel pump
Lexus V8 AFM
S-AFC
Intercooler and piping
3" turbo back exhaust

That's an easy reliable 400rwhp
I once spun one of these 360 deg driving around a roundabout too fast in the uk rain! I laughed myself half to death as it just gracefully steered out on the throttle. A fantastic car no one had heard of at the time
Great to see an A70 supe. I had a facelift 7m-gte for 10 very happy years, rebuilt with 40 thou oversize wiseco crowns, Eagle rods, acl bearings, arp studs top n bottom, titan motorsports 2mm mhg, spec stage 3+ carbon metallic clutch, fidanza flywheel, full blitz nur spec exhaust, swapped the factory auto box for the r154 5 speed manual etc etc etc. Absolutely loved that car....... But then kids happened 🤣🤣
Jared spitting knowledge like clockwork.
That's a beautiful unmolested Supra Turbo. It's rare to see a third gen in such great shape. Love it!!!
YEEEEESSSSS I OWN TWO one factory turbo manual and a NA auto both 87
Lucky man
@@seanoreilly1832 not really….. it’s actually an outdated car
I picked up an 88 NA this week, any thoughts of the difference between the turbo and NA?
Sure would have been nice to score a turbo model, but i'm pretty sure they go for a lot more money these days.
@@619guy202 are you annoyed that someone owns a Toyota Supra?
@@619guy202 that’s the point? Look how mint that car is. Should be proud to own anything in that good of condition
Had a modded 87 MT NA that was the sweetest car a 19yr old in the Navy could own. Those were amazing seats....
My favorite gen Supra! Thank you Car Wizard! I especially like the facelifted ones and the turbo models.
Same here this is my all time favorite Supra the A70
Very nice, so clean and pristine! Most teens today wouldn’t understand why those of us born in the 70s/80s like/appreciate these cars so much.. 80s-90s JDM imports were the best!
I'm inclined to believe that driveshaft was the primary source of vibration
That's a true and rare survivor. I cant believe the condition of the interior and the dash.
That’s one of the best cars you have had in the shop period. If it had a manual hands down.
Yea that is the only gripe but it isn't that difficult to swap those over to MT. Given the car's condition I wouldn't dock any points for that
My mom had one when new in 87 in black w turbo 5mt absolutely badass
The manual makes that car a monster
Not even close lol come on. Its a nice car but no where near ferrari or lambos
My wife had one of these when she was in college in 87, loved this car.
Your father-in-law must have been very well off to provide his daughter with a brand new turbocharged touring car. These were not cheap when new.
TEMS was good and really worked,
Went to high when you either punched the gas or hit the brakes hard.
Yep, came here to say this as well! I remember getting one of these used and using it a ton early - mid game to dominate.
In 1987 the main competitor for the Toyota Supra was the Nissan 300ZX, not Porsche. And the 87 Supra has one of the best build engines EVER! It's one of the only engines that you can Sports tune up to 1,000 horsepower without blowing the head gasket.
This is without doubt my favourite Supra era. The Mk3 is just the most fantastic long distance cruiser
That is a pristine example of a rare 80s Japanese sports car. Wonderful to see!
That intro was hilarious!
The Supra Bros are hilarious

It was sick, brah!!
Was it a Celica or a Supra? They are completely different cars.
@@trippydrew8492 it's a Celica supra
@@trippydrew8492
The first two generations were called Celica Supra. They became just Supra from the third generation, probably as they became too upmarket relative to the Celica and the Supra moniker was well established by then.
@@enematwatson1357 I have learned something new! The previous generations are a little before my time though so I put my ignorance down to that lol, thanks!
yeah..it was like an '83 or '84
I've just inherited a very early production mark 3 NA supra from my grandfather (July of 1986).
That's a real time capsule. Excellent condition.
Beautiful!!! My favorite era Supra, 1987-92. My second favorite color combo here too - my favorite is white with that brown interior color they used to have. I love the interior on these too - those gauges and the ergonomics are absolutely the model of a proper drivers car. Electronic climate control too!!!
IS DAAD A ZOUPRAAAH!!??
Yeah bro!
Wow!
Jared is such a great guy with loooots of fantastic knowledge. I didn't know he was a Toyota mechanic once, thanks for sharing.
My favourite ever car. I've owned two of them. First thing I did with my turbo was.... Add three washers to shim the waste gate! Tons of fun!
A great car at the time. Blew nearly all American cars out of the water.
Seen these new as young lad and they are stunning. Nice sound from them. Nice to see a original car still driving
Had two of these, can't say I found them to be that reliable!
Overhyped junk

Yeah early turbo cars...nah. Not for the prices they command. The Mk3s aren't as inflated but you could have a C6 Vette for half the price of a MK4.
These A70 Supras in dark blue look quite similar to a BMW 840i.
foreshadowing of the new 'bmw built' supras...
Ikr i love these cars in this style from the 944 to ae86 to the old 8 to an rx7 fc and this supra i just have something about it
This video brings back memories of my 1987 Supra.
Been driving my own today :-) mine's a 1991 German spec Targa automatic with the 3.0i Turbo 7M-GTE. Less than 54.000km on the clock :-)
This is the best supra ever. Should of kept mine.
I always love this car when I grow up. Even after the F&F movie I love this A70 Supra
Mine was 3.5 twin turbo.
My friend is going to 1j swap his (I think) 88 Supra as soon has he has the time and money
The 7M was not Toyota's best effort TBH, but nor is it as terrible as some people make out. They sure learned a lot before designing the JZ series.
Oh man!!! This is incredibly awesome, I've been wrenching on them for 15 years! Sweet clean example
Now we have a rolling collection of computers that is the bmw supra. Give me a real Supra. That's just the way it is...
I apologize Car Wizard...but while AZ cars tend to not rust, the environment/roads absolutely SANDBLASTS the underside paint and coatings (and windshields believe it or not). Also, things dryrot bad. Really great car! Thank you for sharing it with us.
I've worked in a tire shop before...i've seen that kind of runout on brand new tires on the tire balancer before
Does that indeed make then trash?
@@oldb-1kenobi no it's normal really
A mate of mine had one of these. It was absolutely stunning. The air con was impressive because when the engine was cold, it ran in reverse to deliver heat to the cabin and keep windows demisted.
FINALLY, a car that's actually WORTH talkin' about...
Had a 1988 6 spd N/A out of high school. Learned to drive manual with that car, and absolutely loved it and wished I still had it.
Replace the head bolts, studs with ARP and torque to higher spec and never have another issue.
I had the 7mge powered Cressida.
Sounds about right
That interior has so many components from my 1985 Toyota Celica front wheel drive twin-cam. Same colours, same seats and materials. Gorgeous!!.
That thing was a beast in Grand Turismo 1. Crazy body roll.
Congrats man
This brings back such happy memories, I had one of these a 1987 model and it was such a great car. Mine was red with a grey interior and was the non-turbo version but even with no turbo it was powerful enough. It was one of the most comfortable cars I have ever owned. I also had a MR2 Mk1 of the same year and that was also a great car. In my opinion this was Toyota at its best.
I had one of these in high school. Spent the summer restoring it with pops then a year later a psycho ex gf rammed into it at 40mph.
Spending more time with the car than the girl? Quite the low blow she took.
Some women are wired wrong. Too bad you can't swap out the CPU.
And this is why so many men under 40 are not playing the dating game anymore due to all the damage goods in their late 20s and to mid 30s that have more issues than a cheap long neglected BMW. When they are that crazy and not even out of high school yet chances are someone will eventually turn up dead someday.
Doh!!!!!!!
At least she is an ex.
There was a factory recall?
Apparently Toyota never contacted me about that..

How do ppl like Jared remember all those car engine facts? 😲
Lots of respect for a man that admits someone else is more qualified in a specific brand of car.
Nothing screams 80’s and 90’s like a velour interior.
& they were comfy too, I had the herringbone fabric in my Camry, wore like Iron, & still looked like new when the vehicle succumbed to rust.
great to see a vehicle that is well maintained and loved. Engine looks great - not overly detailed, but clean. 👍
I got pulled for having a knight rider light on one
You are spot on there - this car was a competitor to cars like the Trans-Am, not Porsche as the Wizard suggests - which was on a whole other pricing tier.
This was one of the most beautiful generations of the Supra. I think this body with the 2JZ would be amazing.
Ah cool, you don't see a lot clean c4 Corvettes

Isiah 30:18 And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him./inspiration+ Not everything in the book of Isaiah is as encouraging as this passage. Much of this book is an admonition to people who have failed a Holy God. Some of us can remember our parents telling us as children, right before they punished us, "This hurts me more than it hurts you." At the time, we cannot believe that is true. But when we become parents and we have to punish the wrong behavior of our children, we understand exactly what they meant. A parent’s desire is to love his child, not to punish. In this passage, we see the true nature of God. We see His heart’s desire. He longs to be compassionate and gracious to us. More than anything, He wants to shower us with His love. But just as a parent also has the responsibility to discipline, so does God. He is also a God of Justice, and therefore, He must "wait" to show compassion./prayer+ Father, I know that You are a God of Compassion and Grace. I realize that You long to shower me with blessings. But I also know that You must discipline me when I am wrong. I may not like it, but I understand and appreciate it. I would rather be disciplined by a loving God than punished by a just God. Guide me with the love that You have for me. Help me to do Your will in all things. Amen.
You are braver man than I
That blue interior reminds me of my first car, 1990 Camry 2.0 Gli.
The car was also white.
There's the source of the vibration, the drive shaft, not the tires.
Definitely my favorite Supra ever.
i really like the 4th generation Supra.
