OMG WHATT MS FARREL WAS MY FAVORITE 4th grade teacher!!! She was at the school PS107 I had herer she was the biggest yankees fan and we even went on a trip to the old yankees stadium!!!
Ashley B Choi hiii my alumni sheee was THE nicest teacher in 107 by far!! Literally the only reason I actually did good in school that year😂 she was the only one that actually cared about the kids and their education 🥺
I loved how Peniel talked about people being ignorant about asian cultural. I'm from Brasil and I was ignorant too. In Brasil there's a lot of influence of Japanese culture, because of immigration, and because of animes and mangas I knew about japan a lot, also I had Japanese (descendents) friends when I was a kid. And because of jackie chan and other movies I knew a little about china. But I only heard of korea because of volley and soccer games, so I didn't know nothing. And I remember in the downtown of my city there is a lot of stores of asians. And one time one of the owners of the store was watching a drama and I was asking if it was Japanese or Chinese. And it was a Korean drama, and I realized he was mad because I thought he was Japanese or Chinese. But I started to researched a lot about asian countries and the culture and history, but a lot of people still don't know or have prejudice about it, and make jokes.
BM: *_I hope you guys are nowhere now!_* That's the passive-agressive energy that I love. Gotta love Matthew, and Peniel too. Ashley is such a sweetie, I feel so bad for her..
my mom once told me that when my family settled in the US after coming here from Vietnam as refugees, when one of my aunts was in school, she had a teacher who acted the same way as Ashley's first teacher, who didn't even want to teach ESL to my aunt and told her to just go ahead and sleep and so now my aunt still doesn't know how to communicate in even very basic English.
When I was in elementary school in Germany we had 3 three refugee kids from Yugoslavia in our class, because of the civil war there. It was a special integration class with two teachers present most of the time. One would concentrate on the refugee kids, who couldn't speak german in the beginning and the other one teach the rest of the class. I didn't know it was special at the time, but now I think it was a really good concept. We also had a japanese exchange student for one year in highschool. She yould speak german at first. Only english and japanese and my english teacher made the effort of teaching her german. She was pretty good after this year. But my german teacher was very rude and just ignored her whenever we had classes with him :-(
Listening to Ashley’s story. I remembered something that happened to me when I was a 1st grader in the Philippines. I was getting ready to move to the US and it was my 2nd to last month of going to school there when one day in class the topic was our future selves. The question was “in 10-20 years where do you see yourself?” The teacher went around the class getting answers. When the teacher got to me, I said, “I will be living and studying in the US!” The teacher laughed, walked to the board, drew a plane and a person under the plane. She said, “you’re not going to the US, this is you (points to the person) you will go on the plane but you will jump out and land in the ocean.” I got so mad that during break time I took the chalkboard erasers and clapped them creating a chalk dust cloud while she was gone. The most annoying thing was. When I was about to leave the classroom. She stopped me and said, “bring me back something nice from the US please.” That day became my last day in that class.
I love how supportive the boys are. Matthew is so pissed and Peniel who is in disbelief about Ashley's story. They had you back Ashley, i'm sorry for what happened to you. But look at you now, you're glowing
Wait... 6 months to graduate ESL! I was in it from kindergarten till 4th grade, and the only reason I got out was cuz it conflicted with my advanced academics class and the second time for it was when I had speech class cuz I have an accent. That is definitely one special teacher cuz I was in that stuff for years 😔
Me and some other kids were in ESL till 4th grade too. Funny thing was that none of us had an accent and basically spoke normal English like everyone else. I think it has to do with our parents putting English not as a first language spoken at home or something.
@@MushroomMario12 The thing is that I had and English accent cuz when I first started learning English that's the accent the ppl who taught me had and from that I didn't really pronounce "r" strongly like Americans and stuff like that. But they kept me in speech to make me have an American accent and it ended up giving me this weird accent where ppl always ask where I'm from cuz of how weird it sounds. The weird thing too was that I was in advanced academics classes and advanded readers, like bro I was fine with english and they still kept me in it. But yeah I think ur right abt why we were in there forever.
I really enjoy Get Real! I always wait for a new episode! I just love how you guys are so honest and relatable even as idols. I hope more idols will get to guest, like Rośe since she’s close with ashley!! Get Real fighting!
I'm so glad Ashley met the nice teacher ( Ms Farel? )Wherever you are, thank you for being so kind and patient with your students that they remember you years later❤️
I remember moving from CA to WA state and teachers putting me in ESL I mean yeah English was my second language but it was also my strongest. I was so pissed because I was at a higher level than everyone else in my damn grade. In Cali I had before school, afterschool activities and then some more tutoring on weekends. I got packets of homework that was due in 2 weeks/month done in a day. Yet they kept me in ESL for 2 fucking years.
In middle school everyone assumed I didn’t speak English bc of my accent, most of my teachers would always seat me next to the students who spoke my language for them to translate for me even though I was the student with the higher grades like bruh I never understood that
I totally agree what Penial said. There are many asian countries other than China or Japan. There are many ignorant people that thinks India is not a part of Asia. It honestly makes me so mad.
I 100% agree with Peniel; when I was going into elementary school where I lived, whenever there was an Asian student (I was the only one in my grade until third grade) everyone would assume you were Chinese (I speak Chinese but I'm Taiwanese-American, and even the teachers would think Taiwan was in China :/) and either do that stupid thing where they made their eyes look narrow with their fingers to make fun of you or they would ask you to translate something in any Asian language
Racist/horrendous teachers man...been there too. I was also an esl student for about a year when I first moved to Canada. I was 6 years old so I barely remember but according to my family, the teacher bullied me so much that I would cry in the mornings because I did not want to go to school since she would treat me so terribly. It really says something about that school since my worst bully was my teacher
Tbh I'm Chinese and in UK even just today I was talking about being Asian and they asked me if Chinese ppl were Asian😭 so like idek how hard it is for others. I didn't even get into the whole indians also being Asian conversation. Definitely ignorance and not from malice though. Would be nice if ppl read maps😭
I never understood the whole ‘Oh, Asians can dance?!’ issue/shock...If you look at street dancing groups/breakdancing groups -especially stateside, many members will be Asian...
Welcome to America one of what I think is the dumbest countries in the world. I know cause I’m still here I was asked questions like “is that your real hair, what are mixed with etc....bullied in school too how I can relate. FYI I love listening to your stories and really getting to know your thoughts and opinions.
I mean Ashley's older, so it was back then when asians were annoying. It is just recently people know it (sadly) that Asians are hot! Thanks to BTS for shaking them Americans!
