  • During the Second World War, women had to get involved and work to support their families. As the war subsided and after the war, society mostly shifted back to traditional gender roles.
‘Womanpower’ was the term generally used during the Second World War by employers and US government officials to describe the influx of female workers helping to run the civilian and military economy. In the absence of men, women were considered a temporary source of reserve labour. As such they comprised 33 per cent of civilian workers in the US and 39 per cent of civilian workers in the UK. At the end of the war women started to leave the labour force, but their participation rates still remained higher than pre-war levels.

Women generally did not work after marriage as they stayed home to raise the children and maintain the home. Upon research I came across a video called 1940’s Housewife School and there are similar videos available on TH-cam. Preparing girls for marriage through Home Economics was a standard part of secondary and grammar schools.
“At its core, Home Economics is about home management. This covers many subjects, such as human development, personal and family finance, housing and interior design, food science and preparation, nutrition and wellness, textiles and apparel, and consumer issues.”

Household conveniences such as household appliances and frozen food were not widely accessible until the mid 1950s to early 1960’s. Women were used to daily shopping at the local butcher, baker and greengrocer. They had to cook food relatively quickly as most people had only a pantry with a cold shelf to store food. Getting around was mostly done on foot and they carried their shopping home in pull along trolley’s or baskets.
