OMG saw Mangs commentate your game on his channel. When I saw the name Elagatua I remembered you from hero academy days! Glad to see you're still alive!
Some great planning and analysis! My hot tip for you is to fully expect rolls to get the worst luck possible. It will help with your mental state when it doesn't work out. It also helps with the decision making, though you've got back up plans already so you're doing well there. Also, it is very much worth sleuthing the potential chip damage to help with those decisions, it isn't too much work if it is for only select cases.
Extremely detailed review, pretty damn good. Congrats on being N°1, it's crazy. Do you intend doing more AWBW in the future ? I would love having another high level high explanatory TH-camr to watch. Keep it up king. 👑
i definitely intend to keep doing videos casually as i find time, though things might hit a speedbump once triforce blitz s3 picks up in the spring. i'm glad you enjoyed the video!
I feel like a large part of the mid-game was you threatening the opponent using just infantry, 1 recon and 1 artillery. It looks so weird in the replay, when a copter and tanks are threatened by infantry.
In response to the calculations for 2HKO with a 9 and 10hp infantry at 41:12... 10hp + 9hp into a unit on a city has a 64% chance to kill. First attack deals between 46 and 52 damage. There's a 6/10 chance of leaving the unit showing 6hp, 4/10 showing 5. The second attack then has a damage of 48-55 on a previous low roll, or 50-57 on a previous high roll. Oddly enough, the chances are slightly more favorable if you attack with the 9hp unit first. Because units receive less benefit from terrain at lower hp, and this attack order removes the need for a high roll on the first attack to have decent odds of killing with the second, it's slightly more likely to happen. Specifically, it improves to a 72% chance. First attack roll is between 41 and 47, the second between 54 and 61. It's also important to note this attack order leaves you with a full hp infantry, rather than 2 injured ones. (Source:) 10 hp first: Luck Offense Defense Total 0 66 0.7 46 1 67 0.7 46 2 68 0.7 47 3 69 0.7 48 4 70 0.7 49 5 71 0.7 49 6 72 0.7 50 7 73 0.7 51 8 74 0.7 51 9 75 0.7 52
Listening to you talk about what our vision tells us about the opponent's past build order really takes me back to 'cloak and dagger' intel in my old Civ days... watching someone's score to know what they've made and when. I've not really heard the likes of Mangs or Deejus talk in the same terms. Great to see that level of thought applied to this game, and see you get the reward for it. Also -- great play! Thanks for the match
thanks a lot! mangs and deejus are much more entertaining than me, but i try to provide a very different perspective for people who really want to get into the weeds
I am sure you know mangs covered this game (he found out after posting, and included the youtube link, which is how i found it). I was apprehensive when i saw how long the video was bit i ended up watching the while thing (after skipping the intro tbh). This is a great video. You articulate your thoughts very clearly and thoroughly, and you obviously put a lot of preparation into your game(s). If being a youtube content creator is your goal then i think you have a great chance of making it! Seeing the other comments, i know this isn't your main game, and chess isn't either. I think pokemon showdown could be an option - requires planning, there is a lot of variety in strategies, and it is a popular game that could attract a bigger audience.
thanks for the kind words! this channel is just a fun hobby for me, so i'm not worried about audience size or anything like that, but i will try to find time to make videos as my life schedule allows!
@@Elagatua maybe map breakdowns. You have a real knack for explaining them... and the patience for it! I just jumped into matches and play it by ear... which is why i was not a good awbw player 😅 Anyways, thanks for the response and keep doing what you enjoy 👍
Elagatua: *2hr long extremally detailed and insightful breakdown. Me at 2:17 : Nice Seriously though, great review and it will be fun to see you continue to rise pushing the envelope for who can be the top player.
Great video, found you from Mangs vid. Watched all 2 hours haha. I'm a big AW fan but am a bit nervous to try PVP. This high level perspective was informative. Did your skills from other games translate to this one?
absolutely, there's no way i would have picked up the game so fast without my hero academy experience, and with other strategy games before that. if you're nervous about trying PVP, i recommend giving the live queue a shot, since there's not a public MMR associated with it, or just joining some casual unranked games for fun!
really insightful analysis, thank you! i was wondering why you didn't put you 1hp tank in the forest around day 16? that way it provides vision of his factory and forces him to use 2 units to kill
yeah that might have been a smarter play actually, i think mentally i was very focused on body blocking the top path rather than maintaining vision on the factory
koal is only good if there is a lot of fighting on roads and copters getting the movement bonus is very important; maps like issus v2 are more viable for koal. on this map, there are a lot of roads but all the fighting tends to happen on the grass. it's also difficult to use tcopters because of the airport location (airport is far away from the base you want to pump infantry from) plus the map is large, so doing mechs with adder is not really an option either. CO picks in t4 are rarely decisive except at the very top levels, so just pick what you enjoy and execute well!
Also, you said you were mad about something at 1:26:22 but couldnt recall what. Was it possibly because you could have used the bottom infantry to capture the comm tower, and the infantry you used for that to instead kill the recon from the top? This wall wouldve blocked StarFlash's interrupt. I think you already hypothesized that he didnt have many units down there. If he did, he'd have to choose between tower or artillery
i think you're exactly right about the block; if i used the AA to kill the infantry before finishing off the recon, i could position the infantry above the recon instead of below it, and then the infantry that reveals the forest also prevents the interrupt. it ends up being a reasonably significant mistake too, because if the infantry is blocked, SF would have to interrupt the capture with a tank instead of the infantry, and the tank would be left in arty range
@Elagatua Mistake is too harsh!! Just, you had correctly figured out and orchestrated much of StarFlash's situation already. Enjoyed the whole video, will be watching more
i started playing awbw almost exactly 1 year ago, but as you can see from my channel, i have been playing turn based strategy games for over 15 years, and i played the cart version of AW when i was young. i actually don't enjoy games like chess at all because there is no hidden information element; this is the same reason i don't play standard or HF in awbw.
Hi Elagatua! Just a few random questions: How long have you been playing awbw? And do you have any other alt accounts? (Surely you learnt abit while playing on an alt? The win rate on fog is insane!) Any plansfor standard and high funs atm? Cheers and have a good day!
i've been playing for 1 year, and Elagatua is my only account. i know it's hard to believe but it's true! i learned everything while playing on my main account, though i had a lot of good fortune not to drop a handful of games early on. no plans for standard or HF ever; i don't enjoy modes without hidden information of some kind, so i'll leave those to the other elite players
Another great vid man, keep it up!
Those small advantages you set up for yourself made the big difference in this match. You got me hooked to your content.

I want to ask, for the case of 9HP first, why with luck 7 the damage done is 46?
As 65.7 * 0.7 = 45.99. I guess the final damage is floor of 45.99.
@user-gz3vl3mz3m funny enough, Advance wars doesn't just use a floor function for rounding, it rounds down below 0.95 and rounds up above that.
