I'm building up my Dreamcast collection, and this video was a big help. I want to play real games, but often the imports are way cheaper than the American versions. I know between the two Power Stone games I'll save at least $140.
I remember getting an Action Replay disc free with one of the UK Dreamcast magazines back in the day and it ran imports great.
I just found a copy on ebay. I might take a chance on it.

Dino Crisis works with VGA. Use the Codebreaker disc to have it output in vga, then whenever an fmv starts, the screen will just turn off or go black. Press start to skip the fmv and the game will load back up in vga mode.
Thanks for the video. I just recently bought Shenmue 1 and 2 Japanese versions and couldn't get the first game to boot with Utopia but Shenmue 2 worked fine so I thought the game might have been damaged. I just tried the Codebreaker disk you recommended and Shenmue 1 booted perfectly. For those wondering you only need to burn the codebreaker image not the Loader image.

Just bought my first Dreamcast after lusting for one since they first came out. It’s an ntsc - j unit that’s been converted to run Australian voltage, and now I’ll be able to play PAL games thanks to this video and code breakers ❤

incredibly informative video just got into the dreamcast a month ago and am going to visit spain next month and was planning on buying some imports when im out there so this video is perfect. Also great example I love "Evil Twin" so underrated.
Adams channel is one of the best if not the best TH-cam channel for Dreamcast fans. I learned a lot about the Dreamcast and also about SEGA in general from here.

Note that the codebreaker is also great when it comes to playing US or JP games on an EU console because it will make the games run at 60hz. I was playing my JP Under Defeat original using some other boot disc and it would run at 50hz.

@PapiFed oh that's Utopia. Dude says not to use it but I'm not exactly sure why not? I mean there's ethical concerns since it was made with a leaked DC Dev Kit, so maybe that?
Tried the disc thing and it didn't work. In the end I just ended up finding a reproduction seller online - Nightwing Video Game Reproductions. I was very lucky he did a copy of this obscure Japanese-only game called Lack of Love. Super interesting game and was glad to finally play it properly since emulation didn't work either
It's Q4 2017 and I still found this video extremely helpful! I'm planning on importing Headhunter + Shenmue 2 (EU) and Federation vs Zeon DX (JP) and the biggest question I had was regarding saving- It's a huge relief to know I can save everything all on one VMU. I was also intrigued to learn about Hanzo and Codebreaker. Thanks for the assist!

I just want to say thank you for this! I picked up a Japanese import of Shenmue a few months back and getting it to load was spotty at best. It's loading perfectly now and I had hours of enjoyment last night thanks to you pointing this out! As for burning this disk, I recommend a program called imgburn if you're using a version of Windows after XP.

As for Windows, I believe you have to add some patches to ImgBurn to make it burn properly, right?
AdamKoralik I don't remember adding any patches to it. It seems to run without any hitches for me and I'm still running Windows 7 at the moment (though I am looking to build a PC over the next year and it looks like I'll be going with 8, even though I'm not crazy about the interface on it).

Yes, they're all PAL. So they'll all work natively. Same with Australian actually.

Finally found a Dreamcast out in the wild today, along with a Keyboard, both where complete in the box, with 1 controller, and a sample disc that was scratched beyond repair, so I'm hunting for games now, so this video could not have come at a better time for me :-) thanks man!

what happens if the game you are playing is more than one cd ?for example i was playing d2 on a pal dreamcast and when i finished the 1st disc it could not load the second.
Most multi-disc games, if not all, ask you to save at the end of the disc for this situation.
If it won't boot the next disc, just repeat the process as if the second disc was the first disc. Loading it fresh. Then when the game itself asks you to load your save, just do so and continue playing.

I used Utopia for years to play my imports, never had any problems on my PAL Dreamcast. Worked flawlessly

I am trying codebreaker atm and when I load it up the picture goes black and white with blue and orange lines vertically through the screen. Have you heard of this problem? I did try to run it through a 50hrz tv using rca cable...

I'm trying to boot Dynamite Cop aka Dynamite Deka 2 with the Cheats N' Codes disc, and it always goes back to the Dreamcast menu after I insert the import (ntsc-j) disc and then select "play game without cheat codes"/ok. The impoty disc spins but always goes back to the dreamcast menu that says says "play, file, music, settings" . Are there certain games that aren't compatible? I've tried inserting the disc at various stages of the Cheats N' Codes menu, but regardless, I have the same results. The import disc is faintly scratched, but not too bad at all. Do you have any thoughts on this matter?

took me years and years to FINALLY do this, but i had a few speedbumps on the way, the site you linked gave me the file, but for some reason, it wouldn't work, i ended up using like 4 cdr's until i looked around and found a rar file, i used that, and BAM! it works like you asked, thanks Adam, now i don't have to use that other disc loader anymore, i had the one that had the arrow/cd screen thing, but that was before i knew about the code breaker. thanks again, now i can start delving more into imports.
Ok so what your saying is you had to burn just the rar. file containing the 2 cdi. images onto the CD-R? Am I reading that right?
no, i needed to extract the RAR file get the correct file from the extraction (it's the small file) and then it worked properly.
TheAirstation86 can you link the file you used? I only found a few cdi files, I don't want to waste a bunch of disks

Will Cheats n Codes force PAL region games to 60hz? I know Evil Twin has no in game option to run in 60hz so I can’t play it on my trinitron
All the PAL games, to my knowledge, have a 60 HZ mode.

I use my Dreamcast with a crt and I use pal. I have a disc that must be running at 60hz as it’s and American version and when I play it the picture is messed up and out of sync. Is there a boot disk to force the right frame rates so I can play. Tysm
Dreamcast doesn't usually have that problem. PAL games in VGA usually ask if you want to run the game in 50 or 60 HZ. Just pick 60.
Question i have marvel vs capcom 2 on jp i used code breaker and it workes fine but i was wondering can i use cheats for it not sure on the whole region cheat system or does it only allow me to play a different region game?
Each region would have different cheat codes. If you can find the Japanese cheat codes, then it should work. But, that might be tricky.
Can the disc titled "Cheats 'N Codes volume 1 for Dreamcast", force boot VGA mode like the Code Breaker Disc? Was that the one flaw you mentioned? 4:49-5:12

Most PAL games for Dreamcast will ask your with VGA cables if you want them to run in 50 HZ or 60 HZ.

I'm playing Frame Gride a Japan only import for the Dreamcast developed by From Software the developers of such games as Demon's Souls, Dark Souls Trilogy, Bloodborne, Another Century's Episode series, and the Armored Core series.
Innovation makes a converter as well. I bought it at Electronics Boutique when I purchased the PAL version of Shenmue 2

Need someone's help please. I inserted the DC Codebreaker disc and went through the prompts, inserted my Japanese original game, the console went through the start up menus, then did not recognize the disc. What am I doing wrong? Was I supposed to use the DC Codebreaker loader disc?
I cant seem to get Project Berkley working with the codebreaker disc it plays music briefly then nothing. This is the only GD-rom I have had an issue with. Any ideas?

The best I can do is clean it, and there's no guarantee that'll work.
You're better off doing that yourself and saving yourself the money.
What about the PAL/NTSC 50/60 Hz thing, do NTSC games run slower on a PAL console or do they miss out some frames to run at the same speed?
They run at the same, correct, speeds.
I am yet to find a game that was PAL that was unable to display in 60 HZ. Most of them have the option right upon booting up.
When you run in VGA, it just typically goes straight for the 60 hz without asking.
And would it be the same on pal consoles i.e. ntsc games run at 50hz?

Joe DeTode When you use the VGA box, games will ALWAYS run at 60Hz, as VGA's minimum refresh rate is 60Hz. If you're playing imported NTSC games on a PAL console without using VGA, they will run at 50Hz; the speed will be unaffected, as the Dreamcast just drops one in every six frames as opposed to slowing the game down (as the MegaDrive did). Imported games have no PAL-60 support, so they will simply select the Dreamcast's default output mode - which, on a PAL console, is 50Hz. Running PAL games on an NTSC console, however, should allow them to run 60Hz all the time, as that is the default video mode for NTSC systems (unless you actively select 50Hz when the game boots, which you shouldn't do anyway). But, again, if you use VGA, the 50Hz/60Hz problem is irrelevant, as games will always run at 60Hz via VGA. In addition, pirated games are generally patched to force 60Hz mode even on PAL systems, and often, non-VGA games can be patched for VGA support via modified disc images - and because this is the only way to play Evolution: The World of Sacred Device in full VGA glory, it's one of the few scenarios in which I condone it (as I also have the GD-ROM version, the back cover of which lies about the game having VGA support). ;X

Look I want to say this was a great and helpful video you put up, even after all these years. However the only problem with it is that the link for the CodeBreaker is now broken. Iso Zone no longer exist as they have been sued, so is there any other alternates? Is the code breaker CD only for one console or for any? I say this because the only one I can find online is categorized for Sony PlayStation. Perhaps a new link or maybe a new video on this situation might help?

My Dreamcast disc spins when the lid is open as if the dreamcast cant tell its open. When using DC-X or codebreaker i can get as far as open the lid prompts but when opening nothing happens. Codebreaker just sits at open lid and the disc keeps spinning. and DC-X doesnt switch to the down arrow to indicate insert game. Any thoughts?
Really strange maybe something isn't working inside of your Dreamcast?
You need to fix the switch that reads if the lid is open.
You say it works on literally on any Dreamcast but what if mine just straight up doesn’t recognize or read burned discs/games? It recognizes legit games fine. Is this model-specific? A worn out laser? Thanks in advance for any ifo
Right so some revision 2 units apparently don't support this. Look at the bottom of the console, there's a sticker. On there it should have either a 0, 1, or 2. That number will also be circled.
It it's a 0 or 1, it should work and the issue is then likely to be damage or the disc not being created correctly.
If it's a 2, then it still should, but there are SOME 2s that can't, but they're extremely uncommon.
Do I have to burn Codebreaker onto a GD-ROM as opposed to a blank CD? Will a CD-ROM play in the Dreamcast?

If you're just trying to play the PAL game, then pick any code for any game, it won't matter.

My cdx will not boot ether disc of Virtua Fighter 3 tb.......what the hell am I doing wrong? I tried two different consoles and yes I do have the gameshark vmu thing. Thanks for any input.
One console is from launch. The 2nd console i used is from the first china batch.

So how comes the download link in your description for Code breaker, contains two ISO's, one for Code breaker, and one for boot loader? You didnt use the boot loader to run it.. im confused..

how did it work for you. did it work with just the code breaker or did you need the loader too? if you needed the loader then i wonder how adam got it to work on the first try with the normal code breaker.
Have you used a Dreamcast to play Neo Geo CD games? I haven't tried it yet, but if my NGCD dies, I'm using my DC.

hoping someone may be able to help me. ive wasted half a dozen 700MB cd-r, trying to get codebreaker to fit / play. I bought shenmue, loved it, got the pal dreamcast shenmue ii on ebay and want to play it. The codebreaker cdi file wont fit on my 700MB cdr. I also found a smaller sized file and thought i had it downloaded but my dreamcast isnt recognizing the disc. Any help would be much appreciated!

very odd. My DCX plays games with my VGA with no issues also when i use my gameshark lite i dont have to select any codes....maybe i got lucky...
I can't get this to work. I've used DiscJuggler v6 for the hell of it to see if I could burn a game and it worked just fine. You mentioned use v4, I downloaded that and tried using it but it still wont work. Am I supposed to create a boot disk and code breaker disk? I did that but it won't recognize the code breaker disk.

AdamKoralik No, I know you mentioned it but I used windows 7 for the test game and it works just fine. I'll have to set up a virtual XP machine and try again.
For the first GameShark, when you said that it needs to have a proprietary memory card does that also mean we can use VMU's for it instead of the GameShark memory card?
It means you need the memory card it came with. Unless you hack a save onto a VMU.

You forgot about the other Best way to play Imports, GDEMU Clone preferably since it's way cheaper and always available and works just as good. Code Breaker and Gameshark allow you to play PAL Games on a NTSC TV, I have both of them and Headhunter a PAL game plays fine without have to select 60Htz when it first boots up with that rolling 50htz screen.

I know this is a old video but I have a question I'm hoping you can answer. I found a disc afew years back that should allow me to play any regions games, but I've been unable to find any kind of information about this disc and I'm unfamiliar with the brand and name. It is called the "Super Game Converter" by Innovations, I was hoping you could help me out with some info/back story about this disc. No, that's not how it works. I just boots the game as it was.
Some games have been translated by the fan community, but you'd have to find those online.
You're right about saving and loading save states for the same game from different regions: I had Mr Dirller US first and when I played Mr Driller EU it couldn't read the US save state and I was 'forced' to overwrite the US save state to be able play Mr Driller EU and create a EU save state.
I had no idea about the DC-X (which I obviously have), but I also haven't had my DC connected with VGA in years. I also only have a couple of imports. Now I know if I switch to VGA I have to get another boot disc. Great info.

VGA to HDMI adapter by Atlona.
Then Hauppauge HD PVR 2 to record.
