Riding on the Nose of a Locomotive from Nashville to Watertown, TN

  • This video shows what it would be like to ride on the front of a locomotive, sitting on the coupler. The camera is mounted just above the coupler on the front of an EMD E Unit passenger locomotive for this late afternoon excursion from the Tennessee Central Railway Museum in Nashville to Watertown, TN. The museum's excursions are on the Nashville and Eastern Railroad, originally the Tennessee Central Railway. This railroad is also used by the Music City Star commuter trains. This excursion passes through Donelson, Hermitage, Mt. Juliet, Martha and Lebanon on its way to Watertown.

    I have always wanted to actually ride on board a train. I guess it will never happen for me, so I sit back and enjoy a ride by watching this video. Excellent POV right on the coupling knuckle. Now one of my favorite videos.

      Only way it would have been better was if it was a dash cam with a view out the windshield, of the hood as it were, at approximately the engy's eye level.

    In the not too distant future this will be the route for NC&StL 576, a 4-8-4 steam locomotive being restored by the Nashville Steam Preservation Society for mainline excursions. The city of Watertown received a 110-foot NC&StL turntable donated by CSX that it’s working to install to serve as the primary halfway point for 576 excursions.

    That was a whistle? It sounded more like a baby seal...

  • @CameraBryan
    @CameraBryan  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    That is a signal whistle, not a Hancock. I wish we had a Hancock on one of the locomotives. A lot of people don't like them, but I love the steam sound.

      This locomotive has two different whistles.

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      CameraBryan It has an air whistle?
      Why? Legal? Or, if there is a mishap,
      plantiff's attorney will sue the railroad into bankruptcy because the client did not hear a train horn?
      How is it sounded?

    • @CameraBryan
      @CameraBryan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This was common on old passenger locomotives. There are two valves in the cab. They would use the whistle that wasn't quite as loud normally when switching, at passenger stations, etc. It's still legal, just not as loud as the other one. Sometimes you will hear them referred to as city and country whistles. Slip and fall lawyers will sue no matter what, even when the whistles are all legal (as in this video).

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      CameraBryan Thank you. Interesting that the air whistle is legal at public grade crossings.
      A lawsuit may be successful if the air whistle is not recognized as a train horn. (I have sounded the air horn less loudly when all traffic has stopped and no more warning is needed.)

    The flyover that you see is that the CSX the old l&n line?

    • @CameraBryan
      @CameraBryan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's L&N, but it was the newer line that was built to bypass downtown and Union Station. This was built before the U.S. entered WW1, at the same time that they built the new main from Athens, AL through Lewisburg, TN to Brentwood, TN.

      A lot of cool Tennessee railroading very nice on your page.
      When you coming out of Columbia and you get down near Lawrenceburg there's another Old l&n line: do you what is now it runs like blue locomotives goes right by the modine manufacturing it's not a very fast track speed but I know it keeps going like it's going down towards Alabama?

    • @CameraBryan
      @CameraBryan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the Tennessee Southern, now operated by Patriot Rail. They interchange with CSX at Columbia, and run the old L&N main down to Pulaski, TN (Pulaski to Athens, AL is abandoned), and the L&N branch down to Florence, AL (the connection to NS (Southern) across the Tennessee River is removed).

    • @CameraBryan
      @CameraBryan  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Directly above the cab. There are a lot of quiet crossings on this line so you don't hear it as much as you'd expect.

    What railroad is this?

    • @CameraBryan
      @CameraBryan  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +surukalo This is the Nashville and Eastern Railroad. It was originally the Tennessee Central Railway. After the TC went bankrupt in 1968 the L&N operated this portion of the TC until the formation of the NERR.
      A few minutes after the start the train passes under a railroad bridge. This is the Shelby Cut-Off, built by L&N and now CSX.
