Original kick panels are tricky if they are brittle and old. You may have to flex them a bit and that can cause them to crack. Best trick I have found is to get the door sill plate out of the way first and it should come out relatively easy.
That is the Retrosound dash speaker with a dual voice coil. It is wired to the front left and right channel along with the kick panel speakers. Future state, I am going to wire the speakers to an amp.
A speaker pop without an external amp, from my experience, is typically a bad ground connection at the stereo. You may try cleaning the ground surface. Maybe run a temporary wire directly to the battery negative terminal to test.

I installed on my 65 but get a speaker pop any time radio turns on or off. Any ideas?
