Over pruning the interior canopy of trees is a widespread practice that can cause serious long term issues with the structure of your trees. Sprouts (often called suckers) should be retained in order to encourage interior branch development and improve branch taper of long limbs. While selectively thinning can be appropriate, it is never advisable to remove all new growth within the interior canopy.
