  • In this video, I will explain to you and talk about your beagle's aggressive behaviour. Why is it that your beagle is aggressive, reactive, and excited when on walks or at any time? I've been a dog trainer and beagle trainer for many years and I have figured out why beagles get aggressive even though, beagles are known to be sweet, kind, and fun dogs.

    Basic yet convicting. I am overly loving with my beagle and sometimes forget he needs exercise, training and socialization. He's my first dig and I promised to do anything I could to help him and give him a really good home. I've done pretty good at it with help from my dog training neighbor and videos like these. Thank you!

    You are so right! Thank you for talking about this. Especially about stress!
    I've also found out that my dog gets easily frustrated because his demands for freedom and his stubbornness are so great- but if you make good compromises with the dog and manage him well, he rarely reacts to other dogs.
    I've found out that if one lets him sniff, he wont react to other dogs at all!
    But if you do, he doesnt have any outlet and becomes really stressed.

    Beagles need lots of mental stimulation probably more than physical. Ours was obsessed with food - eating food, getting to food, where her next meal was coming from. She was very biddable if you had treats, otherwise she was the most stubborn dog I've ever known. Not for the faint-hearted and I've owned lots of dogs!

    Very helpful video, Saro! I have a 2 year old beagle - recently rescued and most of the time she is wonderful. Friendly to other dogs and people, and very affectionate towards us. This week though ive noticed a couple of times when she's not wanted to do something (she mistakenly thought i was going to pick her) she growled a little at me, and one time lightly nipped me. I understand there was an element of stress as her demeanour changed and obviously i would like to avoid situations which trigger that... But also im worried my reaction didn't help. I reacted with a firm No and backed off. But also i didnt want her to think the growling was an effective method of getting what she wants. Should i be worried that shes registering this response as ok?

    I had such a hard time with my beagle. I had no idea they could be so aggressive, insolent, extremely stubborn. My dog as a puppy was this way and never grew out of it. But he could be so loving as well. Beagles are definitely Not for me! Will not ever buy or adopt a beagle ever! Worst experience and that's coming from someone who had a lot of dogs all their life!! I'm convinced he was schizophrenic!! I rehomed him. I loved enough to say I'm not good enough for him and gave him a better home.

      Or you could have gave someone else a problem. I am considering putting my 5 month old female beagle down. She is so aggressive and there should be no need for it here. We have five acres fully fenced in and all kinds of things to play with in the yard..music...toys...water...shade...sun...huge dirt piles to dig in.. She is way to aggressive with my female basset hound mix. Bitting her and making her yelp. She tries to get away but the young on looks like she is on crack...too aggressive. I dont like it and I dont want to give someone else this problem.

      @@bigtexas3077 Please reconsider putting down your puppy. There are beagle rescues who rehome beagles to people who understand them and what they're getting when they adopt a beagle. So you're not just "passing on the problem."
      We now have our second beagle. Our first was incredibly mellow. This second one is not by any means. She's been difficult at times, but it's because she's a beagle. Comes with the territory. Wouldn't give her up in spite of it. Her positive attributes far outweigh the growling and occasional aggression. I can't imagine NOT having a beagle in my home.

    Hi my Beagle is 11 months old and I've recently started taking him for walks. He barks at people passing by or other dogs. His fur stands up and his tail is wagging but he doesn't try to nip or bite. The mailman walked up to him and let him sniff his hand. It sniffed his hand while barking and wagging his tail. He didn't bite or nip at the mailman. I will refer to more videos but I wanted some input on if he is aggressive? I have two small children at home and he doesn't bite or nip at them. He is gentle and hyper.

    My 15-month old beagle-mix loves all people and up until recently had been very friendly with all kinds of dogs. It started a couple of weeks ago that she has been getting into very aggressive fights with other dogs after some time of rough play at the dog park. While I don't know what her trigger is, I think she is stressed. I exercise her a lot, socialize her, give affection, train her, and care for her appropriately. I don't understand why after a while of playing, she aggressively latches on to other dogs... Any advice appreciated!!

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm sorry to hear about the challenges you're facing with your beagle-mix. Sudden changes in behavior can be concerning. It's positive that you're providing exercise, socialization, affection, and training. Given her recent behavior, it might be helpful to consult a professional dog behaviorist or trainer. They can observe her interactions and identify triggers that might be causing her stress. Sometimes, subtle cues or experiences can lead to changes in behavior. Additionally, consider monitoring her body language closely during interactions to understand any signs of discomfort or anxiety. With expert guidance, you can work on addressing her triggers and ensuring a positive and safe environment for both her and other dogs.

      Many people think that they have done everything and nothing has worked. The reality is no one can be perfect and do exactly what they should be doing all the time or even provide the right amount. That is because we do what we think is the right thing and not what the dog feels is the right thing to do. Even the professionals have a hard time being perfect. So, you just need to be more open to improvement.

    Our beagle, age 2 1/2, gets aggressive when we play tug with him and his toys. We made the mistake of playing this way with him and my husband got bit/punctured and bled. While we will definitely stop playing tug with him now I'm concerned about this happening at other times. I take him for 2 good walks a day, to a dog park twice a week, we stop and let him sniff and meet other dogs and he is good. He plays hard with other dogs bigger than himself! He has a blast! Does this still sound like he is not getting enough from us? Oh and he is never short on affection from us. He sleeps with me every night, too! Rabbits - he barks at but is getting better and better about stopping that too. Perhaps I just need to be giving him more training. I bet that is our downfall. What do you think?

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It sounds like you're providing your Beagle with a good amount of physical exercise and socialization, which is great. However, it's essential to remember that mental stimulation is just as important for dogs, especially breeds like Beagles that are known for their intelligence and energy.
      Playing tug can be a fun and engaging activity for dogs, but it should be done with clear rules and boundaries. It's essential to establish control and teach your dog "drop it" or "leave it" commands during play to prevent any aggression issues. If you decide to reintroduce tug play, make sure you have these commands well-established and reinforce them during the game.

    My beagle is very sweet and loving but he has his moments. He’s almost 7 months and he has been living with me for about 2 1/2 months. He will try to bite if I put him in his crate. When we first got him he would bite if we picked him up at night. I think it has nothing to do with his old home. And recommendations?

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need to take steps and actions that builds or improves the bond between you. He has not bonded with you and does not trust you to follow your lead yet and that takes time and it takes doing the right things to improve. The biting is a sign of being scared of you, being stressed and lack of confidence for being left in a crate. I explain and talk about it more in the following live video. th-cam.com/users/liveN2l-9HHT67A?feature=share

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What is the scenario that causes him to growl and bite you? Please describe it. The way you handle it for time being is just don't allow your beagle to to get to that point that you need to challenge it and allow it to growl. Change the routine and provide more mental and physical activities during the day so it can be calm and relaxed at night.

      @@SaroDogTraining Hi Saro, than you for your reply! Just tonight, the dog was lying on my son's bed (it's my son's dog), he loves tummy rubs, I was speaking calmly and in happy voice to him, he was sprawled out as if to say "please rub my tummy" as soon as I reached over to rub his tummy, he growled and bit me. He feels very bad, because right after, he instantly sits up and wants to cuddle and give me licks as if to say sorry. This behaviour only happens a night. If I had done the same actions during the day, he would have not reacted the same wayand ould have been very happy to get that tummy rub....not sure what to do

    • @SaroDogTraining
      @SaroDogTraining  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It could be related to discomfort, pain, or anxiety. Sometimes dogs develop a bad habit that does not make sense to us but it does to them. I am guessing at the end of the day, evenings, he is too tired or over stimulated so he is reacting with his stressed mind rather than his heart. What I would suggest you to do is make sure that he is not physically or mentally overstimulated at the end of the day, unlike some other cases. Also, try to invite him to come to you for a rub rather you go to him for some time. I hope these tips provide some solutions for you.

      If a dog is showing aggression towards other dog with or without food around, it means that dog is giving too much importance to food and that might be because he was having a hard time getting food(milk) from its mom. So, it has become a learned behaviour which you can't get rid of. Just let him eat alone in peace.

    Hi.Thanks for video. We adopted a beagle that had been abused for two years. When we adopted him we was told he had high anxiety around other people and dogs because of his neglect and abuse. He can be aggressive at dogs and humans. We walk,run and play with him every day. He gets plenty of love and care. He will follow commands and tricks he has been taught until he sees a strange dog or when people get to close to him outside.. He is not aggressive at all with his adopted family including extended family. He does have anxiety attacks and becomes aggressive at strange dogs and sometimes people while outside. He is a wonderful dog at home and an amazing scent dog. I want to socialize him with other dogs but have no idea where I could do this at. Any input or ideas would be great..

    Night - 8.30 p.m
    Take him out after mealtime for potty
    Morning and evening playtime to drain some of his energy and then back to crate for him to sleep
    When he behaves hyper and acts weird I put him in the crate again or let him out
    He runs from one end to the other and acts very crazy when I go near him he tries to bite me, when I hold his color he acts aggressively, when I say no he tries to bark and bite me aggressively

      @@SaroDogTraining yeah! Any breed can get aggressive if the owner treats them really aggressive! And it's called abuse! 😒 But I have never never even heard of a beagle getting aggressive!

      We had same problem, a guy from mountain rescue told us to pin him to the floor and hold his bottom has, they can't move the top one so can't bite, now all my hubby has to do is show him one finger and he backs down, trust me it works, good luck

    You are really good trainer 👍but my beagle only howling goldens and some dogs not all how ı solve this we walk 3-4 hours a day and he is really social

      Your beagle needs to learn and practice more social skills. Not all dogs like to be greeted and may not like your beagle. Reduce the walks to max. one hour a day and practice the walking etiquettes. th-cam.com/video/GZWHF-GPV8E/w-d-xo.html

      Also crate train him , they won't destroy your home or pee and poop in their own house, introduce slowly with treats, and it will become their haven, yes I know Saro hates treats but in this instance it works. Only crate them at bedtime or for up to two hours per day tho, do not make it a punishment
