@@vaderdraco6892 awesome. Had alot of fun on that ship. I miss my time there. Hopefully you had fun on the cruise. I don't remember much. Lol. Too much partying. Lol
Jennifer Kelly? I was on that big bitch from 90-95. I don't remember women on board until around '93, not counting temp duty Midshipmen. The first permanent duty women were officers.
I served on the USS Wasp from 2005-2009 Deck Department 1st Division. What's cool is my grandfather served in the navy for 22 years and retired off of CV-18 USS Wasp. Pretty good video, the music was a bit loud and I had a difficult time hearing the people talking.
5 years on her sister ship working in DPC (Data Processing Center) as a Data Systems Technician, USS Essex LHD-2 from April 93 till April 98, 2 deployments and A LOT of good memories!
My boyfriend is deployed on this ship right now. Now I have a better understanding of the operations of the ship and what he is doing. Thank you for this video! Can’t wait for him to be home.
My father, duty officer for VF-81 on CV-18’s first Pacific cruise, was a life long member of the Wasp Association. They were all invited to the commissioning of the LDH-1 Wasp. I was just looking at the memorabilia they were given. Pop wouldn’t let me wear his Wasp cap when he was alive. But afterward I wore it to an electronics store and started talking to a young man behind me. I noticed his wife was looking me all over and watched as she stopped in shock when she saw my cap and screamed, “Look at his cap.” Her did and saw it and after I told him Pop had been on its first Pacific cruise he told me he had been on the new Wasp’s first cruise.
I was on her in 2004 deployment. As a Marine I was lucky enough to get to work as combat cargo on the flight deck. I dont miss the berthing area lol but I do miss working on her flight deck. I also was given a Remote control boat of the USS Wasp as a gift and it takes me back to the days of working on her
I grew up on that damn ship, 1990-95. I was in charge of all .50s and 25mm guns. The E5-E7 were trash. The weapons officers were worse. I hated my experience so much I did the rest of my 20 in Naval Special Warfare as a SWCC boat guy (MKV & 11m) and as an armorer at a SEAL Team. When I got to NSW, I experienced culture shock. My CO, a former ST6 Task Unit Commander, called everyone by just their first, last name, or their rate nickname (gunner, boats, etc, but never by rank or title, unless you were in trouble. I never saw anyone in their dress uniforms, unless they were in trouble. He walked around shirtless most of the time, encouraged everyone to PT, lead from the front, and waited until everyone was done on the long runs around the base, cheering for everyone to finish strong. Best job and command I ever hard. The fleet can kiss by dirty boat guy ass!
We were marines on the Shreveport coming back from Norway….and a jet rolled off the side of the wasp….I watched it happen , being a smoker…..the whole convoy circled twice around the dye packs and sailed on……crazy….wheels weren’t chalked ? I don’t know what….🤣😂🤣
What's really cool is that, in 1500 years, when our ships sail the stars, our navy crews will look back on their beginnings sailing across the oceans of a little blue planet in the Milky Way.
Bill Jakovac EM1 Generating and power distribution. Plankowner. Retired the day the Wasp formally joined the fleet. All my ships were Gators, and to serve on the Wasp was the ultimate experience.
This is a cool ship that can do lots of things. As they said, they have no catapult so can't launch most navy aircraft but I wonder... If a capital carrier can't recover it's aircraft (for whatever reason) is there a emergency landing system that would allow them to recover on this ship. They couldn't be relaunched, but it seems a better option than ditching.
There is not a recovery system for those aircraft on the CVN. That said, with four wires and an emergency recovery barricade, there are a lot of opportunities to get aboard.
I had to turn off the video bc I couldn't hear the narrative. It would help if the music was louder and maybe add some air-raid sirens and dogs barking.
I would have loved to understand the first half of the narration. Could the speaker have talked any faster & less clear? Embarrassing for the navy public relations bureau. I enjoyed the second half narration, however. Crystal clear.
lol not part of the original video. i would not put that in the video. however the footage most likely was taken in australia during the same exercise. talisman sabre is a multinational training exercise and we (wasp) had more than 5 countries on board
Is there really a big difference between a helicopter carrier and a assault ship besides it's designation? It seems assault ships carry fighter jets that are either capable of vertical take off or short runway/take off capabilities. If a country doesn't have those types of jets , then it's a helicopter carrier??I'm sure a designated helicopter carrier also has storage room for emergency rooms and sea/ground assault vehicles.

I served on USS Peleliu LHA 5. Those amphibious carriers are so nice. Wasp is a beautiful ship.
I was an OS2(SW) on the uss belleau wood LHA3 from 83 to 88
Wasp, you are truly the inheritor of the Essex Class.

That F-35 makes a difference!!!!
Excellent! I'm just getting ready to start of 1/350 scale model build of the Uss Wasp. Thanks for the excellent details.
Upload a video when you're done. I'd like to see the finished build. I'll subscribe if you reply so I get the notification.
Got out in December of 2019, miss this rust bucket of a ship
Thank you Sailors and Marines. Even us Soldiers like the way you work.

just learned about these today. this has to be the most all in one a ship could possibly be.
Proud of my sailors that defend America every single day. Thank yall
OEF 2004. Took us to Qatar and then picked back up from Kuwait. Good memories.
I was on that deployment as a Marine working combat cargo on the flight deck
I was stationed on WASP from March 2004- January 2007. Lot's of great time's and some bad one's. Repair division all the way.
I was on her in the deployment on 2004. I was a Marine attached to combat cargo, and I was lucky enough to work on the flight deck
i was on the wasp from Jun. 2003 to July 2006! i was a PC back then
@peterkelly4336 I remember you brother. I'm HT3 Morin. I believe we were in the same repair locker.
That my ship. Best ship in Navy.
Thank you for keeping America Free💓💓🇺🇸🇺🇸
Amazing editing.... takes me back to my naval journey of a lifetime...
This is so amazing it seems like out of a sci-fi movie. The Wasp is an aircraft carrier that can spit out smaller ships as well 😂🤯
That ship store is as big as a convenience store. Nice to see the crew have the comforts of home when so far away from home.
HOOYAH my daughter is on there

1800 infantry, is this a battalion, or a brigade?
Sometimes, I wish I had gotten orders to a fleet squadron instead of a P3 squadron. Never got to experience ship board life.

9:29 “we have amphibious landings” and it shows British troops. Some should’ve gotten better stock footage.

Are there Still Harriers on the LHDs?
I think she has F-35's now.
She can carry both, usually one or the other.
It looks like a W.W. 2 aircraft carrier.

So it's an aircraft carrier
Not in the sense of a CVN, but yes. The LHD and LHA carry both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft.
ok, when you see the exact same footage for the America as you do the Wasp something is amiss. Sick of these channels.
AMERICA and WASP are pretty close in function, although AMERICA does not have a well deck.
