Not totally true. If you get to the "anti-hardlock" the first time through when many of the wigglers are dead from the star, it is an anti-softlock. Just ask @defybydefault .

I respect billingual people a lot. I couldn't read Korean, and respect the difficulties learning a second language. Watching the Korean streamer take more time to read and parse the "don't read" sign than a native speaker, and his reaction upon realising, was so good.
It's levels like these that make me realise how good Carl is at level design. Hear me out, that star at the second checkpoint is to show the player that stars make them invulnerable to the hardlock, showing them that if they get the star they're safe. They can't avoid that, it's part of the teaching, and stops confusion about "do I need to go back for the star?" at the end - they immediately know what the solution is and why (and kick themselves when they see they just need to wait!). Fantastic!
I didn't realize the timing on the second set of stars until I watched the compilation either. Not just when they show up, but how they're perfectly timed so that when you go for the first set and get bounced, you immediately go for the second set which sets you up for another bounce, etc.
And I mean it shows, very few people would be able to actually make a level with both hardlocks and softlocks, specially in this amount, and still somehow keep people playing to the end...
He introduces concepts like the wiggler hardlock right at the start in a simple two-step: First with springs to get the player to definitely lock, second with the skull barrier to teach the player it's not just springs as well as show the wigglers moving horizontally across the level, and then those come together for the gauntlet testing the players' skills. And as you said, the star checkpoint teaches players the star is safety so they know to go for it later, and the wind traps make the player learn how to play with the wind etc etc. Good game design. Evil, but good.
@@Dilbet disagree. This level is purposely full of very fast and easy tricks so that even after a hardlock you don't take much time to get back. There are also a lot of regular trolls that are just funny, keeping players engaged despite the bullshit. This level HAD to be good, or else. Sure, they probably pushed through the first hardlocks because "it's carl's level", but there is a lot of actually good level design to be found here

Its crazy because besides all of the trolls and hostile tricks... The actual *design* of the levels are great. You do a great job at tutorializing trolls/mechanics early on in the level to be used as a challenge later. Carl may hate the player, but they respect the art.

I love when Carl makes a new level and these reaction videos come out. My face is tired from smiling! I watch the streams where he worked on this level but I didn't realize just how evil the level was until I watched this.
At about 35 minutes is my favorite reaction to a troll level ever. I don't think I could ever have that much mirth or levity after this hellish demon-spawned monstrosity.
Fun fact, after seeing some streamers play this level, I started toying around with this in the level editor, and one time when the game hardlocked, my Joy-cons got borked after I closed the game, and they were permanently inputting the button press and joystick directions they were held when the hardlock occurred. I had to go into settings and hit "update controllers" to fix it.
I would argue the only thing better is Carl's upload, like this one, where he breaks it all down and shows you the reactions of his ex-friends who suffered through it

I never laugh as hard as I do anywhere else than when I watch people play Carl's troll levels. I sound like a madman, like, literally. I laugh maniacally every 10 seconds and it's the most joyous feeling I'll have all day.
My heart goes out to all the Streamers who had to join the 'SwitchBrick squad' to play this level. (DGR especially, poor man got *utterly shafted* by that softlock at CP1.)
Watched Juz play this and was so excited to see the compilation come out! I was hoping his absolute god level luck at the end where he fell off of a donut and landed directly on the goal would have made it in, but a great compilation nonetheless!

I never laugh as hard as I do anywhere else than when I watch people play Carl's troll levels. I sound like a madman, like, literally. I laugh maniacally every 10 seconds and it's the most joyous feeling I'll have all day.
This is why Carl is amazing. He will make them suffer so he can enjoy. And from time to time gets a genuine laugh for the amazing trolls he’s got!
The handy thing about crashes is you can forcefully take someone’s checkpoint away, and they cant just wait several minutes to die from the timer
And this is why one should never assume that Carl has reached peak evil...
