  • Take a ride aboard Amtrak P40-8 826, the lead locomotive on Train No. 1--the westbound Sunset Limited--on December 21, 1997. Passenger service was halted on the Mississippi Gulf Coast by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and has not resumed since.

    When i was a kid, about 60 years ago, getting a ride in the cab of a train was nearly impossiabe, unless you had a realative working on the railroad, or your dad new some big shot . for a kid of 9 or 10, it was an adventure that lasts forever in your mind! weather it was steam or diseal, now we see it right here on you tube! Big thumbs up!

    That K5LA is epic! Perfect half-step of the chord down from half blast to full blast. I love how the Genesis locomotives sound. It's a shame that cab rides and crews carrying electronic devices went away before consumer audio recording technology got good enough to record modern high-quality audio.

    I rode the Gulf Wind from N.O. To Jacksonville, Fla as a 14 year old in 1963.....sadly, something my children nor grandchildren will experience. I loved the L & N and did much train watching aside the Waveland, ms. train station. Wonderful childhood experiences.

    At 20:24, we come upon a famous level crossing, Padgett Switch. This was the crossing at which Roy Neary (played by Richard Dreyfuss) stopped his pickup truck to read a map and received a sunburn to half of his face during an encounter with alien spacecraft. Of course I'm referring to the 1977 Spielberg classic "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", most of which was filmed in and around the Mobile area.

    This was part of my dad's territory back in 1967-1969 when he worked in the Engineering maintenance of way department of the L&N. We lived to the east (north) of the mainline right past where the second crossing is at the 674 milepost. I used to go to work with him on every third Saturday in that same depot in Mobile. Sadly, it's no longer there.

    I grew up on the road that is crossed just past M.P. 676.0. About 15:45. That's the Dolphin Line Trucking Company on the right. It's still there. They then pass under Rangeline Road. At the time there was only one two-lane bridge, but not long after they built a second bridge to make two lanes North and two lanes South. Sometimes I still miss hearing the train horns. Thanks for the great video.

    Great, Christopher! And I do mean GREAT!!! Do you or your Father happen to have any Cab Rides aboard the EMD F40PHs? SDP40Fs, or E-Units down there (or anywhere?). Or, aboard the GE P32-8BWH "PEPSI CANS," or the old P30CH "Pooch" Units? Even in Super 8? And if aboard the true Southern "Southern Crescent," either pure or in its Transition Era from the SR to Amtrak, well. I'm certain the two of you have many slides at least of those ABSOLUTELY **WILD** Locomotive Consists of that era? Probably video as well!!! Wow were those some wild engine consists during the handover period! F40s leading blends of both Southern AND Amtrak E9s, and occasional SDP40Fs! Anything went!!!
    And the period after the tragic 1978 Southern derailment was "Anything Goes," as well.
    Thank you for posting this! Very interesting & enjoyable!!!

    Very nice realistic footage, a fine cab ride video! And you are NOT using the zoom, which distorts speed and distance. I hate the rail videos where it looks like you are travelling at 15 mph, and railroad cars look like they are 10 feet long, because of the zoom lens. Also, this video has none of the annoying "panning" from side to side. No panning or zoom --- keep up the great filming! The cab conversations also add realism, and are entertaining.

    Does the conductor manually sound the horn at all those grade crossings, or is it done automatically? If the former, how does he know when a crossing is ahead? And if the letter, what are the differing timing and lengths of the - - • - pattern based on (e.g. speed?)?

    • @SETX_Sirens_and_Rail_02
      @SETX_Sirens_and_Rail_02 ปีที่แล้ว

      The engineer sounds the horn manually for the crossings. There is always a "whistle post" a certain distance out from any crossings warning them that they're approaching a crossing (these days they also say if it's a quiet zone crossing). The standard horn pattern for all grade crossing is two long one short and one long blast held until the crossing is occupied.

    It is called a P40DC!!!

    • @ChristopherPalmieri
      @ChristopherPalmieri  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As delivered the GE builders plates identified the locomotive model on the Amtrak 800's as "Dash 8-40BP". That was a bit cumbersome to refer to so those of us working in the industry at the time called them P40-8's simplified even further to just P40's. Eventually the foamer world decided to label them as P40DC's, though there is no such thing as a P40AC to differentiate them from. So to me, they are P40-8s and I will continue to refer to them as such. Here is a link to a photo of the builders plate on AMTK 828. www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=3167292 You will notice the designation P40DC is nowhere to be found. Their successor, the P42, was designated as P42DC on the builders plate and rebuilt P40's do have P40DC on the builders plate. At the time this video was taken, the term P40DC had not been coined.

    • @ChristopherPalmieri
      @ChristopherPalmieri  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not really. What is excessive is the number of grade crossings on this route. Federal law requires a sequence of two long blasts, a short blast, and a long blast to be sounded for every public grade crossing where a quiet zone is not in effect. This sequence is to begin 15-20 seconds before the train occupies the grade crossing. You will find this engineer to be spot on with the requirement. Here is a link to 49 CFR 222.21 if you are interested: www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/222.21

    • @OldSchool-px1xk
      @OldSchool-px1xk 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you are right. The engineer is only observing the law. To my knowledge this came into effect after some awful trains wrecks in the 1940 years, didn't it? Or do I confuse this with the 79 mph speed limit for tracks without train control?
