Whether it's the top or lower divisions, I swear you present the narratives of all these rikishi in such compelling ways. Big thanks for all the coverage you provide! I cannot wait for the next Basho!
Your coverage is wonderful. To see the young talents rise from the lower divisions. To understand the struggle of an experienced rikishi to regain his sekitori status. This kind of continuous coverage will make me a real sumo fan. Somehow it reminds me of following Ariel Halwani for years here on TH-cam - and then suddenly he is a reporter for ESPN. Keep on with the great work!
pretty sad to see the downfall of oguruma. this time last year they had 3 sekitori, now they have zero. yoshikaze retired, tomokaze had a horrible injury that has kept him out for a year and yago has been in constant decline, perhaps injury releated. even former upper makushita nogami has been missing for the past year too. they seem to be cursed with injuries.
Well.. They had an exceptionally tenacious pair of veterans who just kept going in Yoshikaze and Takekaze. The fact that they had no real up and comers since besides Tomokaze and Yago isn't really anyone's fault but Oguruma-oyakata's. Tomokaze's injury was terrible and terribly bad luck, but Yago had known pre-existing bad knees. When you have long term Sekitori, it tends to allow you to have the funds to find and train new ones. It's not like they've been in a situation like Shikihide stable.
I wish they’d add a few rungs to Juryo. So many guys at the top of Makushita deserve a salary. If we had Juryo up to 20 a few more dreams could come true.
What a great idea! Though we all know that changing anything of the sumo tradition is near impossible. But yea I've always wondered why Juryo is the smallest division. What could be a reason for it?
It's been a rotten couple of years for Oguruma with their two veteran flag-bearers retiring and their two likely replacements getting badly injured. They do have some promising youngsters like Takeoka and Fujikawa but they need some time to mature.
Amakaze doesn't look so good. His skin flaps around where extra fat used to be. He also looks out of shape, as if he could benefit from 1 hour per day of swimming to regain his fitness.

Always liked yago.
Thank you for the report.
Gonna have to cheer for these fellas from now on, I reckon.
it's always sad to see injuries hamper someone's potential

@@repeahlfors9951 they actually added two extra slots in 2004. Though more would be nice I agree. maybe it's money issues.
Yago has been in Makuuchi, hasn't he?

Hi Chris, is Saitama Sakae a private/fee paying school? Is sumo dominated by private school graduates like rugby?
Actually they have a very good Naginata club too. It seems to be the best high school in all Japan.
I appreciate you, wannt be youtube friends?

Amakaze is also consistently over 200kg, so..
