Sasha excellent step by step. I ended up going with teh Asustor 6704 (same model with some extras to the 5404). Now my astrophotos are all happy in one spot. Thanks !
At about 11:47, you are talking about Raid 1 and ext4 file system. Then at 11:57, your screen shot has BTRFS selected and Raid 5 selected. Can you provide an explanation of what happened here or maybe do a follow up video?
Hi there. Thank you very much for the very comprehensive video. I have a question that you might be able to answer. Do I need to install 4 SSDs or can I just install 1 to run the OS from?
Excellent and clear explanation with a great tip to not install the hard drives first to ensure the OS gets installed on the SSD. One question though. In your setup you have 4 SSDs, 2 are used as storage and 2 as SSD cache. On which of them is the OS installed ? On the storage SSDs or on the SSD caching SSDs ? Reason for asking is the following. I have the AS5402T model with 2 HDD slots (RAID1) and 4 NVMe SSD slots. I want to install like you advised the OS on the SSD, not on the HDD, and I also want to activate SSD caching. But I only have at this moment two SSDs, not 4. Is that a problem ? Kind regards.
The OS is installed on the one for storage. If you do it like that you will have no caching, which makes it slower. But it still works and you can see and it might be fast enough for you this way.
Regarding ssd. If I want 2 ssd as cache and the other 2 as storage but don't want raid1 because not bothered about backup on another one, which raided option should be used. Raid5?. The setup would be 2 x 2tb ssd as cache 2 x 4tb ssd as storage 1 x had 6tb as storage Primarily to use system as Plex server. Thanks. AJ
RAID5 needs at least 3 HD/SDD of similar size to work. To not doing any backup, use RAID 0. BTW, have a look at Jellyfin before moving to Plex, as it is free and works great!
I hope that this model is more reliable than my ASUStor AS4002T which died a little after 3 years since purchase, and just out of ASUStor warranty. I am now looking at other brands as I was not happy with the support from ASUStor.
Well, I promise you, as soon as I own this room in reality and do not have to make my videos from the basement anymore, I will not use virtual backgrounds anymore 🤣 But thanks, good feedback, I will try to upscale the background, this might help when zooming in.

For the SDDs, use RAID 1 and Ext4. For the HDs, use RAID5 and BTRFS.

You can only use one. Two would be safer but one works too.
I've been running a Synology NAS for about 6 years now. It works great, but I'm almost out growing my 15tb. Also, you still need to back up your data!

Sasha, man, I love your videos, but sometimes the virtual background is, well, annoying. Plus blurry on the close-ups, even at 1080/50.
