Comparing fast and slow shutter speeds on water

- In this video, I demonstrate how different camera shutter speeds can dramatically affect the look of waterfalls and the sea.
Fast shutter speeds freeze the motion of water, capturing crisp details in each droplet or wave. On the other hand, slower shutter speeds create a smooth, silky effect, blending the water's movement into a soft, ethereal flow.
Whether aiming for dynamic action or a serene, dreamlike scene, understanding shutter speeds is key to transforming your seascapes and waterfall shots!
I hope you enjoy the video. Feel free to leave a comment.

Those longer exposures feel like they're giving us a glimpse into eternity, and they evoke emotion that's hard to describe.
What I like most about this video is your infectious love for photography. The sea is always a beautiful inspiration of course, photos become art. Beautiful.
That is just a brilliant video Garry, the 8 minute exposure was just sublime 👌 thank you for all your hard work!!!
There are no words!!!!!...ok...just one....STUNNING!!!!!!
Cheers 👍👍
There is a place for both. Those long exposure shots give you a dream-like quality that can be very desirable. But stopping the action of water drops (small and large) gives us a sense of the explosive power of crashing waves. Personally I think that muddy water ,like what you are shooting, actually require a long exposure. But humans are naturally drawn to clear blue/green water, and those shots often do very well with fast exposures to freeze the water and display it more fully.
Food for thought.
What a dramatic change occurs when you shoot a different shutter speed and lengths of time. Love it.
Hi Gary great to see you picking something from that locality and producing very interesting photos. Your plane photos reminded me of the time we stopped at the end of the runway on Thursday nights on the way to evening classes at Cambridge the colour from the afterburners, runway strobe lights etc with the twilight / dark nights was mesmeric that was 50 years ago and you can’t stop there now. Great shooting. S
Cheers Stephen 👍👍
Gary, you are an inspiration!
Cheers 👍👍
Gary. Your vlogs are just getting better and better. Especially RAF Lakenheath montage in the middle banging.
Cheers Martyn 👍👍
Have to say that I really enjoyed that video. Many beautiful images that I would be proud of if I had taken them.
One will always find source for inspiration and education in your videos, thank you for the lifting of the soul on a Sunday morning!
Kind of you to say Manuel, thank you xx
Really enjoyed this video. When I was a kid, Sunny Hunny was my nearest beach. Great to see it through your eyes. I need to pay another visit! 😀
I do really like and enjoy long exposure photography and I have to say your photos look absolutely epic. The 30 second exposure looked like clouds instead of sea. To me it started to get more interesting after 30 seconds. Amazing results. I have been getting into Astrophotography using my Samsung S22 Ultra and blown away with the results. Great job Gary
Cheers Matt 👍👍
Another great video Gary .Looking forward to the video of your day at Lakenheath .It’s such a great location.Mildenhall is a great place too . There’s a bloke who has a bit of land next to the runway. He has a lorry trailer next to the fence. If you have step ladders you can get a lot night over looking the fence .Only charges a few quid for the day
Very useful comparison of shutter speeds in that closing sequence Gary 👍
Thanks 👍
A brilliant video Gary and great to see all the different exposures in a short time. I can’t wait to see the next one with the jets 👍🏽
Thanks 👍
Outstanding! Gary you are bloody good at this, the photography and the making of these videos, no wonder Nikon love what you do! Cheers.
Kind of you to say, thank you xx
Loved the 1/2 second image then onwards from 8 seconds to 4 mins. Great idea Gary cheers
Thanks 👍
TH-cam photographys very own godfather..incredibly watchable stuff. Fanstastic
I have followed your channel from the very early days, and huge admirer of your work! Thank you for sharing some of your talent with us! One of your best videos! Like you, I love nature photography and aircraft!! Thanks for including jets!! Love our work from here in the U.S.A!!
Oh, thank you so much xx
Fantastic video! You always blow me away! I preferred the 2 minute exposure…and your shots of the jets were spectacular! Thanks for taking me along!
Another great watch with Stunning Shots. Interesting to see all the different exposures. You are the master of long exposures 🙂
Cheers Gary 👍👍
Fantastic Gary, thanks to you, I am really getting into the loooong exposures. To date my longest being a 5min autumn reflection shot. The effect is amazing
I agree with you they are beautiful photos 👍👍👍
Loved this Gary , and the shots from 1/1000 up to 8 mins well done 👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
good demo for shutter differences
Airforces have changed a little since the Tiger Moth days ----- I enjoyed your video
Another great video from Gary. He always has a relaxed yet enthusiastic manner which makes it so so interesting. Check out his fast jet videos if you haven’t already.
Fantastic one of your best, and something I have got to try. 1000th - 8min. WOW
Great Vlog, cant add to what has already been said ,my words ",Brilliant" I feel inspired to have a go at this slower shutter actions, Also Hunstanton is on my door step. Liked the cromer vlogs but this is one better. Thanks for sharing the best just got better, Safe travels around our lovely Norfolk.
New photographer here and new subscriber.
Great job mate!
Very kind, cheers 👍👍
Thank you so much, Gary. Inspirational. The very long exposure shots are breathtaking.
Another great reference video there from my perspective. Thank You
Cheers Paul 👍👍
Fantastic images Gary. Hunstanton is my local seaside resort, I hadn't realised it was so interesting.
Yes, outstanding craftsmanship
Cracking video Gary and great to see the difference in shutter speeds. Hard to choose which i prefer really.
Absolutely fantastic! Thanks, Gary!
Many thanks!!
Excellent work thanks
Most welcome
I learnt one thing last weekend. Check your image before composing another one. 8 minute exposure at Clevedon Pier with a 15 stop filter and the best composition was ruined by the tripod moving during the exposure. Only found out when I got home. So guys, zoom in and check carefully. Thanks for these videos. Became a member this week and am thoroughly enjoying the content Gary.
Cheers and thanks for joining 👍👍
Setting the tripod on sand?
Great video - thank you. And even better - not a Hasselblad in sight.
Excellent video and especially love the shutter speed examples at the end, they were amazing
Thank you very much! 👍👍
Hi Gary. Thanks for another interesting and informative video. Have learnt a lot from you. 😀
Superb video as always, A master enjoying his work, thanks for continuing to produce such great quality videos. The pictures are first class
Many thanks!
@@GaryGough you are more than welcome
Fantastic as always Gary 👏 👌 👍
Many thanks
Loved the beach shots Gary, whatever the shutter speed - but can't wait for the Lakenheath vid - those sunset skies behind the jets were stunning, even made Fat Amy (aka the Battle Penquin!!) look good!! 😅
Cheers 😁😁 👍👍
@@GaryGough I was thinking later, the last time I managed to get to Lakenheath, the Liberty Wing were still flying F-111s...!!
Another great video man 👍 Even though I know I am going to be doing a 10 stopper shot, once framed up I shoot several exposures of different lengths just in case. Sometimes the fast one freezes great wave crashes and it beats the long exposure ideas. 👍❤️
Great minds and all that :)
Great video. Thanks. For me, the sweetspot is around 1 minute, before the distant see becomes so smooth that it's a bit bland.
Another top class video Gary, thank you. 👍🏻
another great video and top draw photos cant wait for more
Cheers Bryan 👍👍
Another great video keep them coming
Gary your photography lessons are simply amazing I’ve been a subscriber for a long time and look forward to every email you send 👍
Where I am in, Eastern Canada NB temp is 18c, weatherman say should last a week and half.
Great video, Gary. I look forward to the RAF Lakenheath video, as that is on my doorstep.
Coming soon! Cheers 👍👍
If I remember correctly, you were in the RAF weren't you Gary?
The comparison with all those different shutter speeds is a good idea for everyone to try. It gives you a good idea of what shutter speed you need for a given effect.
Thanks Gary. great video as usual 👍
Thanks 👍
Hello from Malta, Gary I allays follow your channel. Well done friend.
OH cool, thank you from Huddersfield 😁 👍👍
Great video, Gary!
Many thanks!
Great and very informative video, hopefully there is a follow up where you photograph the two tone cliffs?😀 the jet interlude video could have been part of Top Gun Mavrick!😀
Cheers 👍👍
You say similar to the previous 2 videos, but all 3 are entertaining and worth watching because of their differences, especially F15s and F35s at Lakenheath in this one.
Yet another great video Gary, and loving the long exposures. I see you were very fortunate to have the clouds coming towards you, which IMHO creates a far more pleasing result. Would be interested to know why you are using ISO 100, when the Z8's base is ISO64.
I live on the beach in south fla. I do long and short exposure my go-to setting is 1/3 ..i use props coconuts, driftwood, large shells
very nice and interesting vlog as usual, especially the different images at different exposures, looking forward to shooting with you in the Isle of Harris/lewis in march.
I really like your joyful character.
Thank you 👍👍
Fantastic video Gary 👏 It's very interesting to see the different exposures next to each other.
If you don't have anything palnned for the end of August (29-30) next year and looking to travel to Europe, I do recommend the BIAS show in Romania. It's a brilliant air show, alot different that what you see in the UK.
Very nice photography.
Many thanks!
Gary honestly credit to you. Consistently the best photo channel out there. Learnt a lot over the years and copied so many of your locations. Thank you and absolutely love your content. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very kind of you to say, thank you xx
No doubt the best photography channel on YT, your explanation and inspiration are spot on…. Looking forward to the jets film.. you’re a top man Mr Gough….. Why haven’t Hasselblad given you an Earth Explorer? Seems they’ve gave everyone else one 😂😂
Kind of you to say, thank you. I'm happy with my Nikon deal but thanks xx
1/60 is doing it for me, good test and nice for me to know what to go for myself :)
Liked the1/4s exposure, the 8 minute exposure.....WOW
Great video.
Oh you nailed that F35 in an unrestricted climb. Was that a couple of F15s pictured to on the runway? Really enjoyed being at the Macc Loop with you, was a great day out.
Thanks xx they were F16's btw 👍👍
Have you ever thought about combining images using a long exposure of the sea and a fast exposure of the sky? I think that could look good and vice versa. Great video as always
Already done it :) th-cam.com/video/wjEWJJWa_fk/w-d-xo.html
@@GaryGough thankyou 👍
Excellent video as usual. Any chance you can tell us in your videos which lens(es) you are using?
The long exposures don't give the feeling of the power of the sea, but they are my favorites.
Ah man, i watch and im subcribed to your channel, i live 3 miles away from Hunstanton.
Really stunning vlog with remarkable pictures Gary. One question: Which ND filters did you use during the sequence of 1/1000 to 8 minute exposure?
Excellent as normal next time your in the Brandon suffolk Area give me a shout
Cheers Marcus 👍👍
I have never tried the long exposure pictures that you so ably demonstrate. I am definately inspired to try this. Whenever I try to photograph the sea with any degree of movement I always get droplets on the lens from the spray etc. Is there a trick to dealing with the spray and air bourne moisture or does it not affect the pictures. I spend most of my time wiping the lens dry when the sea is lively enough to give interest. Many thanks.
How to make front blurry photo Gary Gough
Why don’t you use a shutter release cable Gary ?
I do sometimes 👍👍
Well done Gary, great shots!
Great film and great photos again. Thanks, Gary. Shame about the knuckle dragger at 11:42. Why people do this is beyond me. Not funny, not clever, and not necessary. 😡
Love the knuckle dragger analogy :)
Hi Gary, What is the exact location of this video? thx, visiting the UK next year
It's Hunstanton Dean - Google Maps maps.app.goo.gl/3SiqYNeb3D3nDCVg9
Hi there I'm looking to buy this lens Tamron SP AF 10-24mm Lens for Canon ultra wide angle are they any good
I’ve never tried a Tamron in lens. I’m sure it’ll be fine.
For that full series at the end, did you wish you were like 2 steps to the left...
:) Cheers Steve 👍👍
Sunny hunny 🤙
You should have messaged Mark Jutsum and told him you were coming to Sunny Hunny, we'd have given you the guided tour.
Cheers Derek xx
I guess I’m not the only one who calls that a “Simpsons” sky! 😎
😁😁 Cheers 👍👍
The UK f35s are based at raf marham not far from this location
