Yesssssss!!!! You're finally reacting to my favorite Kate Bush album. It's dense, and challenging but becomes more addictive with each listen. Genuinely one of the most forward-thinking, game-changer albums ever made.
Also fun fact: This is one of Biörk's top 10 favourite albums of all time.

I remember listening to this album when it first came out. The more I listened to it, I kind of became obsessed with it. It draws you in. You keep hearing new things, new sounds, and new meanings. It's a powerful piece of work. Kate Bush's influence on modern music cannot be understated. She and Bowie are definitely in their own league. I'm glad you're enjoying her.

Aah! Omg, thank you for making this and for your amazing commentary. It's really nice to see someone actually engaging in the artistic aspect of Kates' music rather than being deterred by how different it sounds from everything else. Im so happy that you liked this album. It's my second favorite of her albums with Never for Ever as my first. I usually dont like watching reactions to this album because a lot of people dont understand or even try to understand what is going on lyrically, vocally, and production wise. They don't "let the weirdness in," and it shows. 😂
On another note, I really appreciate and agree with the connection you made from this album and hounds of love. This album was definitely honing in on the absurd and even tabou ways of thinking, as well as on the dark and exotic ways of reality and human nature. Hounds of Love was honing in on the beauty, intricacy, and peaceful ways of human emotions. I like to imagine that the Dreaming is that rough stage before accepting what is, and Hounds of love is that beautiful and peaceful stage of finally accepting what is.

The contrast between The Dreaming and Hounds of Love is beautifully and only reinforces each of them in their own way, like sister albums meant to be listened depending on the mood. I love risks in music and experimental work is always an interest, even if it doesn't land I'm left impressed by the effort to at least try. Too many artists play it safe once they find their sound and more often than not, their discography tends to falter for it. Kate is bold in the best ways.

One of the greatest art pop albums of all time and we have the CMI to thank for. Story says Bush came across it through Peter Gabriel who was one of the first british musicians to own it. The helicopter sounds that haunt Pull Out The Pin and many other sounds on the album came from this machine.
A strong controversial album with the best she had to offer as a musician. Also great reaction! 😊

I will go into more detail about this album and my feelings about it, but first with the benefit of hindsight you might consider that Breathing from "Never For Ever" was a signpost to "The Dreaming", but of course Kate really went for it on this album, going beyond any of her previous musical output.
"Sat In Your Lap" was released as the first single a year in advance of the album release, since it took Kate quite a time to complete the album. At one point she was suffering from writers block so had to step away for a time. The album did consume a considerable amount of time in studios all paid for by EMI.
So when Kate presented the finished album which contained (in their minds) not a single commercial track, the EMI executives were extremely upset and at one point EMI considered rejecting the entire album. Thankfully, they realised that wouldn't get them anywhere with Kate.
On "There Goes A Tenner" Kate's using a cockney style accent for the robber, an accent that she would be familiar with living in London. Actually, sibce she's from South East Lobdob therre was distinctive south london accent, being from the sane area I can sometimes change into thst accent, depending on who I'm talking to.
Regarding the various accents that Kate uses on this album, I picked them immediately, but of course if you haven't encountered them it can be difficult to identify them.
At the end of "Pull Out The Pin" the sound is meant to be that of an American transistor radio (that was carroed by American GIs) whose batteries are running down, a brilliant attention to detail.
The lyrics at the end of "Leave It Open" have been reversed. So Kate originally sung a guide vocal, which was reversed, Kate sung the reversed lyrics and then it was that performance that was reversed for the final version.
Regarding the title track the various animal sounds were made by Percy Edwards an animal impersonator, who was able to provide a selection of animals that woukd be native to Australia.
Regarding "All The Love" there's a great story behind all of the goodbyes that feature on the track. Kate's telephone answering machine started to malfunction and it got progressive worse when all it recorded was rhe very end of messages that had been left. So Kate had the brilliant idea of using them for this song.
For " Houdini" Kate drank milk and ate a chocolate bar to generate extra mucus in her throat to generate the gravelly sound of her voice.
Kate used the Fairlight CMI considerably more on this album, sibce by this time Kate had mastered how to use it.
I just love that Kate went "all out" on this album, she didn't give two f**ks to anyone including EMI. This was her music, her art and he was going to present in her way.
To say thst the critical reaction to the album was mixed was a bit of an understatement. No doubt critics were expecting something that would be an evolution of "Never For Ever", but "The Dreaming" was so different that it took them by complete surprise.
I love her for being so bold and brave, doing something that the vast majority of artists would never attempt.
I used to annoy my late parents by pkayibg the album on my record player in my bedroom and following the sleeve notes "To play it loud"
THIS is my favourite Kate Bush album, my top four are:
    📍 1 - The Dreaming
📍2 - Hounds Of Love - the perfect mixture of the commercial and experimental
📍3 - Never For Ever - Kate begins to spread her musical wings
📍4 - The Kick Inside - a brilliant debut album, containing subjects that no other artist woukd go near, demonstrating that Kate was fearless right at the start of her career.
Because of her experiences with EMI and the album she movesd out of London to deeper Kent and set up a professional recording studio in the barn at her parents house, so she could spend as much time as she liked, without EMI interfering and we all know what happened next.
Sorry for the long comment, I hope that it will be interesting and informative to some.

Wow! Incredibly informative input that makes me even more impressed by this album. The milk and chocolate bit for Houdini is such a wildly creative idea that I actually had to read what you wrote twice in disbelief since it seems so odd. Reminds me of Bowies pepper and milk diet during the Station to Station years (although he wasn't being creative in that sense... that was just some good old cocaine). Always appreciate your input as it adds to the content what I couldn't on a first listen.

    Kate about ‘All The Love’
"Although we are often surrounded by people and friends, we are all ultimately alone, and I feel sure everyone feels lonely at some time in their life. I wanted to write about feeling alone, and how having to hide emotions away or being too scared to show love can lead to being lonely as well. There are just some times when you can’t cope and you just don’t feel you can talk to anyone. I go and find a bathroom, a toilet or an empty room just to sit and let it out and try to put it all together in my mind. Then I go back and face it all again.
I think it’s sad how we forget to tell people we love that we do love them. Often we think about these things when it’s too late or when an extreme situation forces us to show those little things we’re normally too shy or too lazy to reveal. One of the ideas for the song sparked when I came home from the studio late one night. I was using an answering machine to take the day’s messages and it had been going wrong a lot, gradually growing worse with time. It would speed people’s voices up beyond recognition, and I just used to hope they would ring back again one day at normal speed.
This particular night, I started to play back the tape, and the machine had neatly edited half a dozen messages together to leave “Goodbye”, “See you!”, “Cheers”, “See you soon” .. It was a strange thing to sit and listen to your friends ringing up apparently just to say goodbye. I had several cassettes of peoples’ messages all ending with authentic farewells, and by copying them onto 1/4” tape and re-arranging the order, we managed to synchronize the ‘callers’ with the last verse of the song.
There are still quite a few of my friends who have not heard the album or who have not recognised themselves and are still wondering how they managed to appear in the album credits when they didn’t even set foot into the studio"

At about the same time (a little bit earlier I think), Nina Hagen released her counterpart to The Dreaming: Nunsexmonkrock. Given how much you loved Leave it open, you really need to react to this album.
Both albums are extremely experimental, although Nina pushed the boundaries of vocal acrobatics and theatrics even further then Kate.
While Nina may sound like Kate's evil sister at first listen, I never saw it that way. Nina's voice is like the wrath of angels in ecstasy.
The lyrics are also far from straightforward, often mixing different languages.

    • @mistraldespair
      @mistraldespair หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Randyjoe213 I guess they went with the single version of the title track so it cut off the transition. The same happens with the transition from Babooshka to Delius in Never for Ever btw! There too you gotta go with the 2018 remaster to hear the transition. These were definitely how the albums always sounded, so it's a Spotify thing. An actual change, though, would be Aerial (2005), where she had to rerecord some relatively minor guest vocals because the original guy was, well, convicted for some crazy things. I guess just go with the 2018 remaster with that too unless you are a purist?

  • @tommydevlin702

Hi and thanks for a really enjoyable reaction video. You have now gone all the way through to "HoL" and it is easy to see why from "Wuthering Heights" and through these 1980's albums Kate was such an early music heroine to female artists like Bjork, Alanis Morissette, Sinead O'Connor and many others.
I think you got to quite a few of the factors that make "The Dreaming" such a compelling album. But I do think that your own enjoyment of the Kate Bush discography would be increased if you kept the online "Kate Bush Encyclopaedia" to hand because it includes more by way of her own comments on various songs.
There are things that will inevitably be missed on first listen; eg the animal noises on the title track which aren't animal noises at all but impersonations of animals by Percy Edwards (1908-1996) and the fact that on that track Kate fires a broadside at the colonialism of Australia and how its indigenous Aboriginal peoples were treated so badly - but Kate does so by adopting a ridiculous Australian accent and thereby makes her point but does so in the voice of the colonialist oppressor (of course the whole story of Australia is more complex than that, but this is a song and not a history book).
I'm looking forward to your reaction of "The Sensual World" - even though it is my personal favourite KB album, I will readily admit that I am in a small minority in that opinion and don't hold out much hope that you will join me in it.
But... "The Dreaming" - still as ground-breaking, challenging, inventive, weird and wonderful as it was in 1982. Kate Bush herself said that when she was making this album she knew it had the potential to be career ending, but said too that the sheer risk of that was part of the thrill of making the album. The sheer scale of her ambition and vision is glorious and this album and its planned, organized chaos is possibly the most stark example of that.
    Thanks again.
