  • The Lexus LS500 returns to the show, but this time with some changes - a tuned suspension, more understated trim and a flash, Lexus LFA inspired interior. MotoMan spends an extended amount of time with this LS 500 to answer to questions: What makes up an F Sport of the big Lexus sedan and is it any different to live with?

      All 4 generations of the Lexus LS are considered some of the most if not the most reliable make and models on the road. Do a simple google search and reads the dozens of articles and studies

    • @C6BlueDevil
      @C6BlueDevil 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Splash Top This was a pretty pathetic attempt at badmouthing Lexus, clearly you have a bias against them. Any car can go a million miles. The question is how much will it cost go get there. Also, your list covers miliage not reliability. Thirdly Matt's lexus is 14,000 miles shy of a million not 50

    • @C6BlueDevil
      @C6BlueDevil 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Splash Top Just understand brands like Volvo and mercedes have been around for well over half a decade selling many more cars then lexus ever had. Far many more opportunities for there autos to be taken to high miliage. By comparison lexus is a new brand. Also understand that the reason Lexus/Toyota buyers keep there cars the longest than any other make has to do with the low upkeep needed to keep them running. (A simple Google search will show you what I mean). The reason I vouch for Lexus is also based on my experience with various brands. I've owned 2 mercs, a jag, a lexus, a Nissan and a Chevy all while wrenching on my own cars. Obviously I'm working with a small sample size, but in my experience the lexus just ran. I put over 170k with not a single repair needed, just basic maintenance. By comparison I spent my weekends repairing my other cars. Sometimes it was a fuel pump or a coil pack or just a sensor. Point is by comparison owning a high miliage car is often not a picnic and lexus is one of the few exceptions. I'm know most people with similar experience would agree.

      @@bye7418 I've never had air for that reason. As for dependable, they all have been very reliable, on my LS430 I had a starter go and I was stuck at a store. A tow and $147 later I was back. I've always wanted the air system but as they say, it's not if they fail, it's when they will fail. And at over $1000 for each one.(close to that with install for 3rd party ones), it's not a risk I want to take.

    I have owned both Lexus and BMW. Over the years of ownership Lexus started from low but consistently grows upward over the years, the longer I keep, the more I love it. My BMW is opposite, it started high but diminished over the years to the point I couldn’t wait to get rid of it. Lexus is a better built luxury vehicle and it holds up in all areas that matter: longevity, dependability, reliability quality, low cost of maintenance, fast parts ordering (great parts logistics) and resale value. Lexus aged like fine wine.

I came to the conclusion that they truly nailed the luxury aspect that Acura has been dancing around. ...and having said that .. since were spending the extra $$$, shouldn’t buyers as a community be expecting dependability/reliability for such an expensive car? I mean getting from point a to b is the true luxury that our ancestors didn’t have hundred years ago.

    These comments are to funny. Guys saying they need a v8 are not up with times. If you want a v8 get a 1970s Camaro. The only Benz that out shines this car is the s63, but that’s just in sound. 550 or 450 can’t compete with the reliability of this car. This car with have brown oil in the engine after 10k miles. Compare that to your Benz oil at oil changes. The Benz oil will be as black as my diesel oil. This car is bulletproof, the ls has been since the late 90s. Stay in school kids.

    We were first time Lexus owners 3 years ago and I must say we are very impressed! Having only owned German cars in the past, it's nice not having a car that require thousands in maintenance every year. I really miss the old days when Mercedes, Porsche, and BMW use to build quality products, but I think those days are over. If you haven't driven a newer Lexus lately, I highly recommend it. Anyone who thinks Lexus sanitizes the driving experience to the point of suicide, obviously hasn't driven a newer one lately.

    My '13 GS 350 is bulletproof after 5 years, has a personality and is quick and
    nimble. Oh and also the quality is fantastic, no rattles, NO recalls ever, no issues, reasonable
    maintenance compare to a Jag, Benz, BMW or Audi.

    • @Fluterra
      @Fluterra 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This WAS true for Lexus, not anymore. I had a 2011 brand new Lexus, which had a major safety issue, poor design, and a recall. I couldn’t wait to get rid of it. Also, the competition has caught up and reliability is no different. Think about why: all the parts suppliers are the same. Lexus cars today trade on reputation, not on fundamentals- they are ugly, poorly designed, not sporty at all, and expensive

I have a 2014 ES. It's my first Lexus, and I love it. Not a single issue. If you're gonna put up some substantial money, get what you paid for. It should damn well be reliable.

I have done this with an LS 430 and an 09 LS 460 entry models. I would not dare to do this with any other brand of car that falls within this segment. I need bulletproof consistency. I get bulletproof consistency.

    It all depends on one's personality I think and how much money you have....for example if I'm loaded and I don't worry too much about money?...I buy a BMW or a Mercedes because I'm not interested in reliability or high repair costs! I buy it only because of the badging and the wow factor of driving a German luxury car...if I'm not rich but can afford an LS and not have to worry about maintenance cost...than I absolutely buy the Lexus!!

    Im actually thinking about buying a large 4 door luxury sedan and Im struggling with the choices, S Class, 7 Series or the Lexus. I drove the new A8 snd didnt like the throttle response on that v6 Turbo engine, it just ruined the whole experience. I will await judgement on the LS500 until i drive one. My problem with the S class, its at the end of its life now and i dont want to spend that money on a car that will change in 2 years. The 7 series same situation, but maybe a year longer. So my test drive of the LS will be the deciding factor, if it drives anything like the new LC500 or even 70% of that LC500, i think i will buy one.

    FYI, NPR is not "the government" just so you know. The GOP has cut funding for public broadcasting to the point where most of NPR's funding now comes from private individuals and corporations, which is a shame. The main reason I always trusted NPR was the fact that there was no corporate sponsorship. That's no longer the case, thanks to misguided republican legislators.
    By the way, great review! I love the new LS and it would be my top choice in the luxury sedan segment. The Panamera would be 2nd, if money were no object, but the LS is so attractive because it has all the creature comforts you expect and is relatively fun to drive, but also will undoubtedly be the most reliable choice in the segment. If you're buying for the long term, that's perhaps the most important thing.

    • @richardj3715
      @richardj3715 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      NPR cut funding because the segments that are political are liberally biased and the story angles reflect that bias. If you get government funding, the expectation should be that the stories should be balanced politically and exhibit both sides of the story. Now they are free to be as liberal as they desire.

    I can't tell whether this is a car you really like but have a hard time saying so. Or if it's a car you don't like as much as expected but not worthy of being negative because it has significant value vs the Germans cars.

    I would LEASE a German car. I BOUGHT a Lexus GS 350. Lexus is consistently at the top of the reliability charts. Lexus all day everyday.

    I sold Lexus cars from 2000-2005. That was it's high point. I just dont see them on the road like back then. Lexus has lost it's way being not able to keep up with the German performance cars, and has ceded its position as the bargain luxury car to the Koreans. Interestingly, I see the old SC retractable hardtop converts all over. A very nice car for $15K or so on the used market.

    Im black, so I go with the lexus. Conservative pompous Blacks and Asians always go Lex.
    Ok Ok, racial humor aside, I am black but I'm also a Business professional, and life long car enthusiast. I spend a lot of time hanging out with groups of expensive car owners. This lexus has the best value in its segment, combining factors such as ride quality, features, and most of all dependability. The other clincher is, those other cars you mentioned in comparison to this car only compare in their lowest trim levels (i.e basic xj, basic s550, or a 740i). those models leave a lot to be desired compared to their higher trim level relatives that come with 10s of $1000's more on the sticker. So this is the best car because of the fact that for $100k you're getting a flag ship car, from a company thats all about practicality, comfort, luxury, and dependability; this car checks all those boxes, and does it for far less money than the flag ship lines of rival manufactures (i.e s63, 760xdrive, xjr, etc). In terms of the k900 and g90, they are the best competitors to this car, but both still have some kinks in build quality and performance to work out before than can effectively compete with lexus, as the new LC trolls both by far; before you start criticizing note: I've rode in and driven them all.

    I love the new LS, though there are some things I'm a huge fan of such as the rear panes on the rear doors for the windows. However, overall the construct is quite impressive and the interior is absolutely gorgeous, perhaps one day I'll trade in my 460 for the newer 500.

    Without a doubt whatsoever, I would choose the LS 500.. Fist of all, it looks great.. And then of course, there’s the long term reliability you get with Lexus and therefore not getting completely ripped off at the dealer for maintenance that you would get when you own a S-class or a 7 series.. Lexus just makes a better, more reliable car that in almost every situation, won’t leave you stranded on the side of the road, which is a very distinct possibility with the German makes.. Lexus is the way to go!

    I wouldn‘t touch a German car with a stick. Not mainly because they are poor quality, overpriced, unreliable and badly engineered, which they are, not even because the German companies misuse their customers as guinea pigs for the development of their products, which they do, but because they have been cheating us for years and still do. I have driven a Lexus LS400, SC400, LS460, GS450 - great cars all of them, comfortable, fast enough and reliable. A pity they dropped the V8 in the LS, though.

    I have a 2016 RC200t and I've also had a 2009 IS250 and a 2002 IS300 Sportcross. I don't like a lot of the electronic BS they are putting in their cars now, or the fact that they're focusing so much on SUVs but Lexus can't be beat for quality. I just hope they contine to focus on Made in Japan(ES is USA and RX is Canada and you can tell the difference) quality.

    G80, no doubt! Better looking at half the price if you shop around. So much easier to use over that stupid mouse. Intuitive controls that are easy to understand, very intuitive. Reliability still in question but the warranty is so much better. This LS is an ugly ugly car. Always wanted to have an LS in my later years, but alas! My last two cars were Avalon's and a couple of Highlanders as well. Avalon is now another ugly ugly car. Love Toyota but so sorry to see the new styling trend!

    I’m a lexus owner. I have been driving American and German. I really liked my cars but the cost and constantly staying in the shop had started to wear on me. waiting on parts was like watching paint dry. I had enough. I had got my German car out the shop and told the service tech this was my last time coming in. Remind you I had the car 1 year and 1 month. I went to lexus and traded my car in for a Perowned lexus just to try them out. Then said if I like them after a year I would buy a new one. Guess what. I loved the 2006 gs300 so much 10 years later with 170k miles and going. I’m still driving it and loving it. We can’t part ways. I’m finally ready to add to the collection. LS or LC or LX is going to be next and the Gs is staying.

    I think (my former E38 had 287 kms) that if I had the kinda money required to buy any of these cars of late... I would have to really consider the savings upfront... BMW or M/B will drop +20 grand (new at the dealer!) to get you in.... But 4-5 years later when you see what it’s worth on the Market. I got lucky with my 740i - my advice to anyone is to always ‘consider’ the Lexus as a true contender. Personally... I’m considering the ‘rather Boring’ (used) Post-2013 LS460 AWD. Thanks for th video.

    If I can afford it, S class. If budget is a concern, G90. S class is the best and everyone knows it. But I don’t think the new LS is better than the G90 in terms of everyday use. That track pad would drive me insane in the Lexus and the backseat is not exactly full sized. Maybe it’s sportier than that G90 but no one is driving these cars on the track.

    I'm really impressed with the LS 500. I've owned 2 different LS400s before and other Lexus models, and besides the dependability that comes with Lexus this LS 500 build quality is just on a different level. I think you're getting much better quality from the LS from an S class or 7 or A8, and plus, you need to remember that when you pay $100k for an S450 for example, which I believe is the direct competitor to the LS500, you will start paying more annually on repairs once the warranty on the MB expires. So, definitely a much better investment with the LS, even though buying new cars is a bad investment. :-)
