  • I finished my PhD almost 12 years ago. Was it a waste of time? Would I recommend you to do one, or even go to college? Let us explore the question...

As someone who is currently completing a Ph.D. in sustainable building design, I can relate to the journey depicted in this video. When I started my academic journey, I only had a basic master's degree in sustainable building design and my understanding of the subject was shallow. However, through my Ph.D. program, I have been able to specialize in building energy-efficient designs and utilize coding to improve my freelance work. Throughout this process, I have developed the ability to quickly assess my knowledge level on a topic and effectively process information. Although it has been a long and challenging journey, the knowledge, skills, and opportunities that my Ph.D. has provided me have been invaluable. While I may not pursue an academic career, I am grateful for the experience and skills that this path has opened for me.

I'm really interested in pursuing a PhD in Europe and I was wondering if anyone could suggest some great universities for me to consider. I'm particularly interested in research areas related to parametric design or computational design in general.

It is so valuable to hear the thought-provoking opinion of someone with experience in the topic. As a person who considers PhD in architecture, I can only say - thank you.

I enrolled in architecture program a few years ago, I dropped out due to life situation, I didn't give up on architecture and decided to practice today I am in my 5th year of practice, I got extremely lucky to work under an architect who saw my potential and decided to take me on. After sometime now I realized if I ever want to be independent and have my practice I have to go back to academia without it according to associations of architects in my country " I am not qualified architect" and can't do or practice architecture.
I do share your sentiment that knowledge is the core but the systems in place dictates I follow procedure and get that piece of paper.

I cannot describe to you on how many levels this video resonated with me. I was on the same point and eventually decided to follow the knowledge path (not the one dedicated to a PhD) by get hands on experience. After watching this, you confirmed my assumption or gut feeling. Thanks for that. Also loved the quote from one of my most admirable philosophers of our time: Naval. Stay free my friend! ✌

Yes, it was worth it. You work with what you studied and your thesis is brillant.

Very interesting stance on the subject.
On a tangent note, if I may, what do you think is the best augument for a young architect in Europe today, in order to become a better asset for companies? As in, what can one do in order to be resilient in our profession? Learn coding, master AI tools, learn a different software or regulations, etc.?
I am also trying to speak in terms of marketable skills for a dying profession, which can also help on the financial aspect - as most probably know, architects consider themselves overworked and underpaid.
    Thank you!

For a while I had the same question, but then the answer is simple, and from one of @ProArchitect videos, he says that we have to either decide to be the ones putting in the keys - being under the hood, or the ones being replaced by automation. Now we are in the phase of automation already.. Do we remain with standard BIM and CAD drawings that will soon be completely automated; or do we become the part of the people who are involved in the development of such algorithms that AI runs on..
short answer - incorporate programming and architecture, (dont just learn to code but learn to program, anyone can code but not everyone can program)

      @@jefflevin196 Thanks for your input.
Yes you are right, even though the truth will require some more dedication to learn new skills.
I also feel like most of our peers are deliberately ignoring the technological progress and that will render our profession (as we know it) rather obsolete. I would be curious to revisit these very comments in 10-20 years time, with hindsight.

I love your unique perspective on things and I’m interested in the parametric design. What is my next step from here I’ve been doing architecture, MEP and structural work for over 10 years. And I have been using been for the past 15 years. How much are design as we’re I want to take your help please 🙏 I use archiCAD.

we don't get degrees for a paper, we get degrees to learn to DO something.
If we can learn to do something without degrees then they are now useless gatekeeping.
Companies already know this with the labor shortages hence Apple/Google etc hire without degrees

Very interesting thoughts on AI's replacing academical institutions. Do you envision mechanical, electrical, aerospace engineers self-learning via GPT-# and online learning platforms? How will they ever get licensed without a diploma? Cheers

Very useful video! But I don't think the succesful college dropouts are a great example of 'dropping out' works. What about the ones who failed? Knowledge is somehwat free, but honestly, you still need to learn how to deal with and how to apply it, looking at for example the whole homeopathic medicine bullshit, lol.
