  • After four semesters of choosing my college courses at USC, I teach you 8 ways to make course registration the best it can possibly be!
I cover talking to your advisor, picking the right courses, figuring out who the best professor is, and how to schedule your day out! Resources I mention are below:

If you have the option to pick between the better-timed class and the better teacher PICK THE BETTER TEACHER, you'll be more engaged, happier to do the work and less likely to skip i.e. learn more. And don't be scared to ask around if the teacher is any good

Omg, same. I took a professor that had HORRIBLE reviews, and I took her anyway. She seriously hated me, and I finished with a C+ in the class. I was miserable!

Exactly. Choose the professor over when and where the class meets, maybe over what the course topic is if you need to fulfill an elective.

another tip I have is to register for the maximum amount of classes you can (usually 18 credits) even if you only plan to take 15. that way if you end up hating a class or professor early on you can drop it and you won't need to worry about getting into another class 2 weeks into the year

As a second-semester freshman at a fairly large school I'd also suggest checking to see if your school has a Reddit page. Usually there is one that is student-run and super helpful. Just another resource to consider!

I agree with the 8am thing. it trains you for the real world and some of the best professors I've had were in 8am classes. also, they're the easiest to get into!

Another piece of advice that I have is to have a backup plan or a backup schedule that you come up with in case a class that you wanted is full. AND if it is full but you really want it, keep checking up on the class to see if open seats become available because throughout the period of registration, people are adding and dropping classes all the time!

I love what you had to say about 8ams and I think I might be taking a few of those because then you force yourself to get started and get going which I love! You should make an adise video for the first week of college!

I took classes 9:30 am to 3:45 pm so I only had classes Mondays and Wednesdays. I did fine without eating, but chips became my crutch every day lol. I just ate a bag or two on my way to my next class and I was fine. Your body adjusts really fast. Then again, I've never been like food/health obsessed and I'm not a breakfast eater so :p

I wish I would have watched this video before I chose my classes for the fall. But I'm pretty satisfied with my schedule. I have one 9:30 class every other Monday. Other than that all my classes are no earlier than 11. I knew that 8am classes my first semester would not work out for me. Maybe I'll try it the second semester. The academic advisers were so helpful and they stopped me from picking unnecessary courses and explained everything clearly.

So if you’re worried about 8ams but still want to start your day early, take a 9am or 10am and you’ll still end up having a lot of time at the end of the day to be productive while still being able to sleep in some!

Great tips!! Ratemyprofessor has ALWAYS been helpful for me. I swear by it. I love morning classes! I take 9:30 classes every semester and I've always loved them. The academic advisor tip is really good as well! I really wish I had upperclassmen friends, but I'm an education student and most people at my school are in engineering or the education people are in their 30s with families lol. Anyway, great tips!
ALSO: how many credit hours do you recommend? I've been taking 15 and they're so hard to keep up with.

I'm a sophomore Social Work major and 15 credits at my college is five courses. I've found anything beyond five classes is hard to do because it may not seem like a normal amount of work during the semester but you'll be killing yourself around finals week. But you also have to make sure you have enough credits to graduate! At my school i need a total off 122.

I'm a joint major and I find that one of the most helpful things to do in order to manage all of your requirements is to make a tentative plan for your entire college career that lists the requirements for your major(s) and then the classes you have taken and plan to take in future years in order to ensure you're actually meeting the requirements as you graduate. I also agree about professors. I do better in classes with tough professors because when you know there's no chance of an extension or late penalty on an assignment, you get it done in time.

Wow, the American system is so different to that in the UK - we don't get to pick many modules (and those we do we only have a limited list of options) and the exams are more centrally set, so your grade doesn't depend on how nice a particular lecturer is. Your system seems a lot more flexible (but complicated!)

SENI8R makes no goddamn sense. Sounds a lot more like "Senator" than anything.

as a highschool senior about to finish, 8 or 9 am’s dont scare me that much because you can schedule those days to not even have other classes after them, and if you find a really good professor for the 8 am you might even be happy to go to it.

Thank you for always giving college tips! Currently I am trying to decide between two schools and they are completely different! Do you have any tips on choosing a school?

    • @effiee1991

+SavySaysTV pro and con list, visit, look up reviews, pick your top 5 important things about what you want in a college and then rate each whoever gets the highest score wins, flip a coin and if you're happy go with the school if you're disappointed go with the other one

I'm in the same position. Make a list of what matters most to you in a college (for me, 1 was campus/environment, 2 was ranking/reputation, and 3 was major options) then pick the one that is better for your number(s) on the top of the list

+SavySaysTV if they're really truly equally as good to you, choose the cheaper option. You can always transfer.

I think your choice is entirely dependant on what your post-grad plans are. For me personally I was stuck between two schools because one had a really good program that gave me the option to not have to do post-grad studies, but the other was all about the student life. I'm planning on doing law school post-grad so I picked the school I was confident I would be happy at, rather than a school I was unsure about being happy at for the sake of the program. If you're unsure of your post-grad plans, I would stick with the program so if you know at least you'll come out after four years with a good degree rarer than an okay degree and some good party stories;)

Should I take 8 am classes? I would rather get up earlier and get out earlier so I can do my homework earlier and go to sleep earlier. Opinions?

Are you a morning person? the question isn't do you want to be a morning person, because unless you REALLY are one, don't do it. But, if you are, go for it!

I think it’s a good idea. You might be a little sleepy, but it’s good real world training.

I still have few years until I go to college, but my career prep teacher is making us soon-to-be 10th graders look up colleges. I want to go to USC but my safety college is UCF.

Hey I was watching your USC day in the life video and saw that you're studying what I want to study (business). Would you recommend this school for business? I was previously thinking of College of Charleston but I don't know now.

Help! Freshman tying to register for fall classes and have only been able to get into 3 classes because they are all full. Can't register for my first year engineering classes. Can't find any waiting lists. Seen advisor multiple times and was told to keep trying 15 times a day to see if can get in. I was excepted into University as an engineering major. Why did they admit more students than they have classes for? Trying to pick the best professor is the least of my problems, just trying to get in a class, any class, any time. Anyone else out there have this problem?

I really wish that I could've known that "ratemyprofessor" website earlier. What would you advise me if I'm in a class with a professor who got so many bad rates from students? (almost 90% of them are negative comments). And I don't think that I would have the chance to change my class now.

  • @heyheyitsJoanna

Y'all BE CAREFUL about the "holding classes for other people" strategy. At my college, this is against the rules and if you're found to have done it, the honor council will review your case and pass punishment. Check the rules and ask around before you do that. I know it sounds odd that they'd suspend you or something for trying to take a class, but that's just how it works.
