    In terms of timing, he might well be the most advanced drummer ever. This guy can layer polyrhythms on top of polyrhythms and manipulate timing more than any drummer I've ever heard, all at absolutely flawless pace. His groove is just as amazing, listen to bands he's done recordings with like Annihilator etc.

  • @jeyesacks
    @jeyesacks 16 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This solo was surprisingly musical. It has an orchestral quality, and the linear patterns and polyrhythms are actually interesting and unique.

    No competition?No dependancy?No chance?
    Gosh this guy totally killed off the satisfaction I'd get from watching a drum solo from this very moment onwards.

    I don't even have to be a drummer to appreciate this! He's got amazing talent! that doesn't even justify what I just saw. I'll just go with speechless....

    ppl need to stop calling this 'boring'. yea it starts out slow, and it's long, but it builds really well plus mangini has enough tricks to keep you entertained anyway. this solo is sick

    I had a chance to have dinne with Mike, and the rep from Pearl after a clinic. It was amazing sitting next to him, like he's just a regular guy - which he is. Such a gracious, and fun person.

    He's also one of the two best drummers at that particular school (Berklee College of Music). The other one is John Blackwell. Both extraordinarily gifted. There're great musicians, then there're musicians that are simply unhuman.

    He uses the old buddy rich trick. The Molner technique for single stroke speed. Still practicing myself. Can't use much power though, you use a finger stroke on The up stroke of the wrist or arm. Or you can use the Push Pull technique too. He's good at it, but it's limited him drastically.

    People respond to different things. Some like speed. Some like complexity. For some, rhythm/groove. Etc. As I've gotten older, I just like what I like, which can be any/all of these things. I can't fault others for liking different stuff.
    As for Mangini, I like him for technical inspiration and cool ideas. I don't know if I 'enjoy' listening to him as much as some other players, but I'll take what I like and move on....

  • @enjoichoclate5
    @enjoichoclate5 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    i have friends who hate this guy because they cant stand the sound of just drums not in a rock song but mike mangini cant be in a band cuz honestly hes blow every1 off the stage he doesnt need to follow a specific beat he creats his own as he goes along his coordination is amazing his speed is unheard of and the want he can completely ignore his feet and keep a perfect beat with them while doing something 100% different with his hands is insane mike mangini creats a work of art everytime

    A solo is not always supposed to show your skill, it is one of the functions it serves, but some drummers focus more on having a good groove rather than playing something very technical. Someone like Stanton Moore always has a nice groove, it's always about the groove. Not saying that Magini is bad, he's like one of the best in the world, but there are different types of drum solos not only super technical ones.

    I agree. For me, the doublebass kicks are the hardest thing. I can do anything else on the drums with no problem, but when it comes to the doublebass kicks, I really have to concentrate.

  • @todaEK4

    i really really agree with that...people get scared and bring other people or musician down for being great at the instrument...which is stupidest of the stupidest...or maybe they're too lazy to practice and be creative... remember mike created that probably out of the blue.now that's INSANE!!!

  • @Jimbengoz
    @Jimbengoz 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    In this video you can see the best gravity blast rhythm ever and the typical manginian crossed-arms passage, which is wonderful and super hard to play, I think the harder rhythm ever on drums

    Unfortunatly some of you that left your coment here, knows absolutely nothing about drumming. When I saw Mike Mangini playing for the first time, I realised clearly why is the number one today. There are some things that He does that "nobody" can do. He also plays all styles of rock better than everybody I have ever seen, and this is not only my opinion, He was choosen between the best drummers in the world that could play in that level and style to became the new Dream Theater's drummer.

    @zapor67 Dude he's a teacher on Berklee. He loves his job. Never in a million years would he leave it for DT. Also keep in mind that DT has no chance to pay him at least a quarter of what he is being paid at Berklee.
    He may record an album (and he does so from time to time) but there's no chance he would tour with any band.

    I read something in an interview with him where he talked about developing a machine-like consistency with his technique. I think it shows in the stuff I've seen from him. It's an interesting sound - although I wonder if he can also NOT sound like that when needed...? I'd like to work up the stuff he can do so I'd have those kinds of options myself, of course. Just sayin....

  • @ScottMcPhie
    @ScottMcPhie 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Furiiiiouz Are you basing that on extensive studying of his footage, or off this video alone? Because technicality takes many different shapes - at the WFD competition the technicality he's featuring is his speed. And he indisputably has that in spades. If you want to see syncopation or odd time mastery, check some of his other vids. He absolutely IS one of the greats.

    Thrillcekr,
    I used the word "surprising" when mentioning how musical this solo is because the technical abilities Mike Mangini obviously possesses don't overwhelm or eclipse the flow of ideas and the feel of the solo. I wouldn't imagine many Joe Rockers are equally qualified to teach percussion, even in their own living rooms... Thanks for the clarification...

    Mangini v.s Rich would make the world end as an atomic bomb. A new particle accelerator. Maybe they would create a supernova, or maybe a black hole as a result. From those doubting Buddy's speed and unbelievable stick control, watch his "buddy rich stick trick solo" video here on youtube and observe how fast and complex his hands can get (also watch his "buddy rich at the hague" with some caution... Buddy and Mike would make the world end in a drum off). :]
