He is not. But this Mike is not human that's why people like the other Mike more; he is a bit more relatable to us simple mortals 😂
I think Portnoy is better at a different feel, they're both amazing and I will say Mangini is one of the most versatile drummers ever imo.
They are both good.
I don’t think most people are arguing that Portnoy is a “better” drummer, I think even he has admitted that Mangini is more advanced than he (to be fair, I don’t know if there are any drummers more advanced than Mangini). The main argument is that Portnoy is a better fit for DT’s style of music, which makes sense with how much he influenced the band for the first 25 years of their career. I’d argue that along with Petrucci, Portnoy was the most influential with directing the band for the majority of their career. I’m not here to pick a side on the argument because I love them both, but Portnoy is definitely more of a “soul/feel” drummer, and Mangini is more of a “technical/advanced” drummer. Some people prefer the feel, some people prefer the technicality, and both points are completely valid. I personally think that Mangini’s style was a perfect fit for speed metal bands, like Annihilator, because of how tight and technical his playing is. And Portnoy was a better fit for more traditional prog rock projects that he was doing outside of DT. I love them both though, and I’m glad we have many albums from both of them with Dream Theater to enjoy 😁
Gotta agree on this one. Font know whos really better but i like this mikes style better, i really think hes quite amazing. Portnoys nor bad either tho of course.
This sound goes straight to my soul. Excellent instrument and excellent drummer.

2:37 I could only wish Mike had that kit over his current kit to play live with Dream Theater not only would he sound incredible but he'd look awesome! That kit Rocks! I've played Pearl my entire life and I'll be 65 This October and Currently play a 7 piece Master Works kit and there's no better kit than Pearl! I remember Mike as I grew up in Newtonville and went to the new Newton North High School in 1974 when it opened I was on the swim & Dive Team I was a Professional Diver I was 3 in our States division in both 1 meter springboard and 3 meter Platform my Coach was Ben Merritt a super great guy and coach he drove me hard I was at the Pool every morning at 6am practicing as I lived right across the street from Newton North and I was showered and in Home Room by 8:20 every morning oh the good Ole Day's but Iet Mike somewhere along those lines but that was decades ago Mike probably hasn't a Clue! But none the less he is in my top 5 drummers! With Gavin Harrison Dave Weckl Virgil Donati Steve Smith and not in that Order. Mike I'd Love to hear you play in clinic if you do any I live in Sharon I'm Retired and available anytime! Please let me know how to tap into your playing , 12:36 thoughts and Emotions!

Mangini always make this looks like very simple drum pattern but its actually really hard to execute.

I love everything about Pearl drums. My first drum kit that I saved up my paper route money for was a 6 piece pearl maple kit that was made in the early 80's. Jeff Porcaro will always be my favorite drummer. RIP to all of the Porcaro's who have passed in the loving name of Jesus Christ.😊
