  • In this video I demonstrate how to apply boiled linseed oil to your carvings and share a few examples of why and when you might want to do so.

    I really enjoy your videos! At age 64 and retired I think I found a new hobby! I hope you do more videos of other projects too!

      65 year old here, and I’ve just started carving. I’m looking for a hobby I can take into retirement. Sort of fell into this when I got a random TH-cam of Doug Linker carving the 5 minute wizard. I really love these videos. I’m not a patient person but I’m working at it!

    Really enjoying all of your videos. You have a great presentation style and you are very good at explaining things. I hope you will continue to make additional carving videos. Thanks for sharing your work, it’s great.

    Hi, just found your channel and very much like your presentation method, carving in stages, but am disappointed that there are only a couple, do you plan to do any more? Have looked at your instagram page and there only seems to be photos of your other projects. Although new to this hobby am pleased with my results so far which gives me confidence to continue.

    I just put my entire carving into the boiled linseed oil in a big jar. I let it soak for 10-15 minutes and then wipe off to dry.

    Really interesting video. I find if I put petroleum jelly in the groves of the cap and a little on the groves of the glass it is easier to remove.

    Is there anything else that can be used BEFORE painting? I heard BLO is very flammable.

    Wondering where you learned about putting linseed oil on before painting? How long do you let it dry before applying paint?

      I learned it from Sarah Barraclough's books and projects in Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine. If you find the International Association of Woodcarvers TouTube channel they have a meeting where she demos her painting process that was extremely helpful for my learning. I usually paint it pretty much right away, maybe 10 or 15 minutes after oiling it.

      @@dywoodcarving Thankyou for the reply. There is a lot of misinformation being spread around the carving community about the use of boiled linseed oil. I am going to try to find the source and hopefully correct it.
      I look forward to your future videos.

    How much linseed oil do you mix in with an inch of oil paint? I’m interested in trying that technique.

      Whatever the size of that jar is, probably a pint? You can't always start with less and add more if you want to darken it more.

    Try setting them on waxed paper...no stick;

    I use mineral oil, it’s food safe and doesn’t make the carving yellow… js
