  • Here at Planetauto, we know that when we get an EV on review, a road trip must be on the horizon, meet the MG4 - first the UK launch at Bicester, now a 800 mile Scotland Road Trip!
    So where to go? Well, with it being MG, it's got to be good, so we decided to take a long haul trip Up North to Scotland...
    In this first part, join us as we travel to Aberdeen, where we stay overnight before we head over to Inverness.
    We showcase the range, how to charge it, and we look at what's different with this brand new EV hatchback.
    Part 2 coming soon.

    It was your review of the MG5 that convinced me to hit the button and buy an MG5 std range. 23 months and 85500 miles later.. very happy. I do not wish to Jinx myself but no real issues. At 79k front pads only 15% worn! We now have 4 of them as taxis. However I really want an MG4 as a private car. Lol.

      @@PlanetautoUK due early July. It was great to have such positive detail about range. The salesperson rather downplayed the capability, saying to expect around 240-250 miles. I can see that,with care, the full range is achievable.
      We've gone for the SE extended range model. Wondering if the V2L cable is a worthwhile accessory as it might be handy for charging other devices without having to lug them about . I saw a demo of it boiling a standard kettle at 2.5kW.
      Also hoping that we can make better use of our solar PV for charging in the summer instead of sending it back to the grid at minimal price.

    Thank you for the content. I'm loving this EV, but a concerning issue nowadays is the price of rapid charging Vs back in the days when the Nissan Leaf was king. £0.65 per kWh and the first stop was 31kwh added. That's around £20. This 31kwh added would give a real world range of around 120 miles. This equates to 16.6p per mile. A prius that returns 70-80mpg at current petrol prices is less pence per mile to run and costs less than a long range EV. I think EVs suit certain circumstances and scenarios if purely looking at the cost per mile. Wouldn't recommend an EV to a regular long distance commuter but great for other use cases as you'd charge at home like me at 5.5p per kWh or even better via solar panel ect

    • @PlanetautoUK
      @PlanetautoUK  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only viable route currently is home charging at mega low rate or type 2 if you’re staying over somewhere. Interestingly I’m currently putting together a new Leaf review at the moment, thank you Ash

    • @decimal1815
      @decimal1815 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Used MG4 SE is about £22k with super-low mileage. Prius with equivalent mileage (under 10k) is £19k. That's not a big gap.. and the running / maintenance costs will soon make up the difference.

    • @markburton8303
      @markburton8303 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a bit misleading, as on a trip; motorways, you'll never get 70-80mpg out of a prius. It'll be more like 55mpg as long trips do not really make the best use of the electric side, then you are left with a not so economical petrol engine doing about 13p per mile, which is not a vast amount more than 16.6p. Then there's the offset of 220 ish miles at the start at 2.5p per mile. Still, if you cant charge at home, don't get an EV unless your charging is paid for.

    • @PlanetautoUK
      @PlanetautoUK  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for the comparison, it’s interesting to look at the numbers side by side, yes home charging is definitely preferred however a number of manufacturers off mileage packs, lower rates Ford, BYD etc

    • @markburton8303
      @markburton8303 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@PlanetautoUK Definitely! I've been calculating away as we have just traded a Corolla Self charging hybrid in for an Enyaq. The Corolla was working out at 11.3p per mile, which is pretty damn good for an ICE - circa. 56 ish mpg with a best of 62.4mpg. Based on public charging at 75p per kWh and home charging at 9p per kWh, 43% of our charging would need to be public for it to break even with the Corolla. That's never going to happen. So up to 6500miles a year on public chargers and we still win, and that's against a very efficient ICE car fuelled by petrol over the more expensive diesel - our most effficient car to date.

      The range of the MG4 trophy is rather good at around 280! We got pretty much mile for mile at up to motorway speeds, and when we dropped to 50 for the many average speed areas, it really started to recoup. The e-Niro and the new Niro EV are great long journey cars, and have great range too, recoup well, and may just have the edge in terms of price if you are going for a used one. Battery is 77kWh(?) X 34p per kWh (UK standard energy capped rate at the moment) = £26.18. it will cost a bit more to account for losses.
      This will be the same calculation for any EV.

    Such a nice color scheme on that particular car!! We are concidering this as our new car next year in the top trim since it is priced so incredibly good compared to the main competitors. The only thing i wonder about is why use the eco mode and no AC?
    If i am on a trip i want all the comforts and the heat and all the bells and whistles.
    I do have a hyundai kona and that car has never seen eco mode because..why? Im not interested in squeezing out 5 more miles to have foggy windows, no radio and cold seats since the point of having a car with all these comforts is then moot. It is otherwise a nice review but us normal people do not go for all the EV batter squeezing modes since there is no point. I see EV drivers in the 110Km/H zone on our highways go like 80 and it has to stop. It is a car no matter what fuel it goes on. Enjoy it and just plan for whatever stop is needed 😀

    • @PlanetautoUK
      @PlanetautoUK  ปีที่แล้ว

      None of it was economy to save money as far as we were concerned, we do like to demonstrate the best ranges on a long haul, but we’re northern, unless it’s cold it’s not pleasant to have heated seats, air con we hate with a passion- we would drive with the windows down however microphones don’t like that - increases noise exponentially. Plus the majority who buy one do want super economy. Our day to day to car is a Mercedes W124 25mpg and I drive that with the windows down.
      There’s very little between normal and eco in acceleration, this video was to demonstrate 800 mile won’t break the bank, locally I drive pretty much everything in Sport or the equivalent, but nobody cares nowadays, most want eco, as for the Stereo thats obvious, copyright on video affects monetisation- in our own cars and when not filming we have systems whacked up. PS We travelled at 65 to 70 in a 70 and 55 in a 60 - watch part 2 for a different experience.

    I have the MG4 SE, bought in December to replace my lovely 2 year old MG5 exclusive. I love the MG4 BUT the adaptive cruise control is a nightmare. The car slams on the brakes when passing a parked car! I love normal cruise control having used it for 20 years. Unless something can be done about it, I'm just going to have to switch it off. The lane assist system is also far too violent. Again, it is easy to simply switch off. The MG4 is a brilliant car but the above foibles need to be sorted. It seems crazy to have to disengage from safety features because they are set up badly and pretty dangerous.
