ok answering my own question, I realised it's not a USB C to HDMI adapter, it's a HDMI CAPTURE CARD to USB C - amazon have lots of them around $20 or so but make sure it supports 4K 60 resolution / refresh rate. Capture/output to the phone is usually only at 1080p though.

Finally a video on this error code! I have a Wii U that hadn’t been used since 2017. One day last year, I turned it on for the first time in 5 years and I got an error 160-103. Very frustrating. This happens whenever I launch system settings or almost any application. Games for the most part work except Super Smash Bros. and 3 others where they will crash and get this error code if I play them for a few minutes. I’m positive that the memory isn’t corrupted since I didn’t do any modding of any kind and literally the system went untouched for years. I’m unable to update it outright and I cannot even sign out of my Nintendo account / Mii or it will get me the error code again. All my save data and DLC are in that Wii U, which still can be accessed when I attempt to play any games, even new ones. Will trying your method you think allow me to override the system’s settings so I can connect to the internet / update the system / update the time and date and have full access to my console again? This is very urgent. I need to get to my save data and DLC content to back them up and play my system again for streaming.
After you’ve plugged it in for a little while, take out the CMOS battery and unplug the system for about a week and then try it again. This worked for me. I am thinking it was a fluke, but it is worth a shot.
Sorry, but that only fixes messed up CFW installs. Particularly Haxchi coldboot related issues. The typical corruption issue is caused by a bug in the eMMC firmware that can be triggered by corrupted files (IE failed auto saves) and essentially fill it with junk until it deadlocks. Only way to repair this is flashing a backup made before the chip corrupted on a fresh eMMC and replace the bad one. If no such backup exists, the console is done for. Only affects early models and can be avoided by using HDDs for saves and installs instead on the internal memory, though. Same goes for consoles that have been sitting for so long that the eMMC discharged and lost the files. In other words: if you don't wanna lose your Wii U, turn it on at least once every couple of years and make a NAND backup.
I find it funny that the eMMC rate of discharge is the same as the expected market life of the WiiU. That the rate of failure from disuse or from regular use, depending on the components, is equal to its expected market life. Part of me looks at this, had I feel like there was a bit of planned obsolescence here, using known to be defective or low-quality parts. Not to keep costs down but to intentionally create a situation where forcing an upgrade would happen.
@@ninja011 A lot of devices from that time have this issue, particulary smartphones and tablets. And not just the cheap crap either. It's a capacitor plague type of situation, only way less talked about since most affected devices are simply obsolete now. Besides, they did change components in later models, including the eMMC. But since the specs didn't change, it wasn't deemed a revision. Consoles from mid-2015 onwards should be fine, maybe earlier. Mario Maker bundles and later are considered safe.
@@ninja011 Not really. As I said, officially the Wii U didn't have any revisions, just different suppliers. I believe GaryOderNichts wrote a NAND checker that gives you infos on the eMMC health and hardware a while ago, but I haven't tried it yet. Otherwise all you can do is open the console and check what's on the board.

Mine has been plugged in and on standby since 2017, and has functioned properly through the occasional power-on, last power-on being as recent as January 2023. Is it necessary for me to mod my Wii U to avoid losing everything if/when 160-0103 inevitably comes around? And if so, which homebrew apps am I going to need for a restore process?
Well, if at least the internet browser remains working, you shouldn't need to mod it. It is possible to just open the homebrew channel from there. I'd mod it though, it unlocks a lot of homebrew and will be especially important now that the eshop is closing.
i've ordered a pico which will arrive tomorrow however my issue is different. literally everything else on the wii u works fine, except anything related to system settings. the system settings app crashes upon boot, and the parental controls app loads in a little bit and then crashes display 160-0103 i hope this would work but if not should i just get a replacement unit online for £30. everything else works fine. i cannot find any good information on when it only shows up in system settings

Hello, 6-8 years ago I used miiverse on my Wii u for the first time and it froze. I tried to switch it on and off but was still frozen. Once it ran out of battery, the console wouldn't connect to the gamepad (which was working) or the tv. Would this tutorial work for me?
If it bricked and you didn't do it, then it is the internal EMMC, or NAND that is corrupt and is encrypted. Currently I don't know of anything that can fix this. Sorry
I have a wii u like this, it has parental lock and gets this exact same error when I try to access it. From the user screen I try to add new user and trying every password possible I still 3/4 to go trying to brute force the password. I can't do the parental lock workaround via online, nor can I try a system update because it's locked out of internet access. Any ideas how to fix both? Ideally using your method looks like exactly what I need. Where do you recommend I start? I have to buy a Pico and inject the software?
Yes the Pico/injection should fix that. Your next step to purchase a Pico. I am still working on a few broken consoles, but want to do a full video on how to load the pico. Hope this helps
I ended up getting pico and removed the parental controls. I was able to set up a connection and update to the latest firmware. everything looks good so far! thank you both!
Does this method work on a Wii U that got this error "naturally"? I've never hacked/modded my system, however I started receiving this error today, and can't get past the wii u splash screen when it tries to boot.
No, unless you’ve modded it and gotten a backup of the NAND and eMMC I believe the console is dead. Later down the line it is possible that there may be a method to restore the software, but as of now there is none. I’d keep the console around for you never know when a fix* may come!
I tried turning on my Wii U for the first time in over 5 years last week to the surprise of it not working. Unfortunately, I am not getting any error code so I am blind as to what the issue is with my Wii U. I am going to attempt to use this method to try and fix it to see if it works again. I'll post an update after I attempt to fix it. UPDATE: Unfortunately this method did not work. The recovery menu would not boot up at all. I even tried recovery_menu_dc_init and it still did not work. I am at a loss for words. I have no idea why my Wii U suddenly stopped working as it was perfectly fine before and I took good care of it. There is no reason for it to have bricked at all. It doesn't help either that I don't get an error code so I don't know what the issue is. If anyone has any other suggestions for things I should try, throw them my way.
I know this comes off sounding like complete BS BUT Nintendo is offering complete repairs til the year 2024 for any customers with a bricked firmware. Nintendo is shipping legit Brand New consoles after you sent it to them. They won't back up your data. Its also Free. They did this to their other consoles in the past with even the SNES console ending support it wayyyy after its end in 2003. I've seen it on gbatemp and two videos posted this year. Give it a shot if you have the time to call or mail. Good luck all
@@dylanmeyer4840 So to make a case with big N, you have to sign into their Nintendo site. At the bottom are repair links. If the issues is solely the error code they'll honor a fix, they'll try and ask for money for shipping both ways. If they can't fix it which they Can they'll often just mail a new one out that is actually new, not a refurbished. They have held onto these for repairs but are tossing them otherwise

Hey so I'm having a no display issue. I try to get into the recovery menu, with no luck. I've tried to re cache the USA nand information but I don't think it's working. Does the disc drive try to eject when you press the eject button in the recovery menu?
@@niesz Yupp I know the eject button moves down the menu, just trying to confirm if I was in the menu or not. So when your in the recovery menu, the disc drive doesn't make any noise when you try to move down the menu, by pressing the eject button? Also I've tried composite out with no luck. Pretty sure nand is dead
@@niesz never modified. Unit just randomly one day would freeze when trying to load into anything. It’s boost into the Wii U menu. I can select the titles and if it’s a disk game it will read and infinite load at the game load screen. It will some times allow me to boot a arcade title like Mario 64 and if it’s successful in loading. It runs at like .5fps. The next thing is I can short cut it into the settings menu and the moment I try to select any options in the menu, it freezes.

Hey there, I just purchased a second hand Wii U and went to clear the old users data. I then tried to perform a system update and it froze at 89%. After waiting a bit I impatiently turned it off and back on again. I was then hit with a 162-4065 error code. After turning it on and only getting a black screen I was able to hold down the power button to do a soft reset that got me back to the Wii U set-up screen. I went through the options to set up my nintendo account and tried updating again. It was unable to update and I was then hit with the 160-0103 error code and now that is all I get when trying to turn on the console. Do you know if this method will help fix this issue?
@@its.glitchen is there a disk in the console eject it and try again if not maybe hold start or X while launching the wii u as it may be hacked and be able to launch a environment instead such as tiramisu
@@Sunglasses_Emoji There is no disk in the console and it is not hacked/modded to my knowledge. When I went to download the new update, it seemed like the console froze so I turned it off and back on again which seems to have corrupted the OS.

mine Says it has a disc drive error but the only thing i can think of it being damaged is that i had spilled some pop makeint a game ccase sticky and then without remembering i placed a disc on top of the case and then when i tried to put the disc in the wiiu it worrked but got permantly stuck on the loading screen it was splatoon one so the loading screen was moveing just never finished
Hi i just bought a pico and i have added all the necessary files both on the pico and on my 32 gb sd card, when i boot the console and insert the pico, the console always turns itself off after like 3 second. I've tried over and over again, before the drive spin, after the drive spin, and both before and after "wii u" pops up one the screen. All i need is to access this recovery menu but i can't. Any tips? :/ Update: I was able to get in to the menu but the fix did not work for me appearantly, can someone please explain why? I'm so dissapointed rn :(
Having the same issue as yourself with the console turning itself off after a few seconds, did you have to reinstall the files or is it case of just kept trying?

The problem I have is when I load 4 games in my library I get this error messages, the other games seem to be fine as are the games I downloaded from E shop to the internal memory. So arg...I dunno if this is gonna fix it or not...
@@niesz I managed to solve the problem. I uninstalled the games and reinstalled them and they were fine. I have no intention of buying a new Wii U. Only when the OS gets currupted then I'd say it's game over, I intend to mod my Wii U in due course anyways so it's not like I care about playing it in an official capacity anymore. I just need the OS and GUI to work.

Okay, so how do you fix one game that's downloaded onto the console, but won't play due to memory issues and you can't delete it either for the same reason and you can't reformat the console because you'll lose the ability to play the other games you downloaded onto external storage?
So I downloaded software to my SD card and Pico chip. I wait for the boot up process I plug in the chip and the console shuts off it won’t go into the black boot screen. Did I do something wrong? Possibly download the wrong software?
@niesz ah just noticed It does indeed have CFW installed Don't uninstall the title that has the warning sign or it might brick it Ah, I see that's why it didn't boot I think it needs a payload to boot or something? But oh well I guess you fixed it by changing the boot to the wii u thing

Hello, I’m unable to log into mine. Like I’m unable to make an offline mii without error 601 0103 and can’t log into my existing profiles offline. I know the system says it needs an update. Is this tutorial a fix for that? For clarification: If I make a new mii it crashes If I log into my exist accounts it says sign in failed and takes me back to the menu regardless of whether or not I’m trying to log in offline.

My wii U failed during an update (the latest one 5.5.6), before everything went worng, it showed a message saying the update failed and it needed to restart, since then, it does not show anything on screen, it doesn't connect to the gamepad, when you try to turn it on, the red light goes blue, and stays constant blue, do you think this method would fix this issue? @@SadielHrz Cold Boot HaxChi was the old way of softmodding the Wii U. It use to be the only way to permanently mod the Wii U (the browser hack would reset when you rebooted). The problem with CBHC is that you needed a game from the app store. If you deleted or moved the game you would brick your Wii U. Thankfully CBHC is obsolete because of Tiramisu. With Tiramisu there's no real danger of bricking.
Nice vid, but I actually tried this method with the raspberry pi and it worked for a while then after using the wii u some minutes it just showed the error code again. I tried to do the exact same thing again but it didnt't work this time :(.
The repair video itself is fine, I definitely want to try this RPi Pico debrick option myself, but the music during the waiting periods is horrendous. Not only is it rap, but it's so annoyingly loud compared go the regular talking.
I tried this fix with mine, no dice. Really sucks. I wish I had the same luck some other commenter had about calling Nintendo and getting a replacement. I tried calling their support about the issue and their response was basically, "The only info I have is what you found on our website. There's nothing we can do as far as repairs go."

Looked into this a lot. You can create a new MLC so a naturally dead WiiU is fixable now…. However…. My WiiU is at firmware 3.0.1, and the Pico exploit works post 5.5.5. 😢

This is only if they had a failed softmod. If they got this without a softmod they are dead... Until someone comes up with a way to replace the bios, or other software on a wii u to bypass it.

Well 1. Bricking a wii u is an accidental mistake that can happen to anyone 2. People still play on a wii u because the either can't afford a Nintendo switch or either they are confortable with the wii u 3. I don't know 4. I say the same

You would need to make a nand dump somehow by connecting a flash dumper to the chip directly on the board

I believe this is for a Wii U that became bricked due to firmware update after installing hacked firmware or power off during update.

From the user screen I try to add new user and trying every password possible I still 3/4 to go trying to brute force the password. I can't do the parental lock workaround via online, nor can I try a system update because it's locked out of internet access. Any ideas how to fix both? Ideally using your method looks like exactly what I need. Where do you recommend I start? I have to buy a Pico and inject the software?
Yes the Pico/injection should fix that. Your next step to purchase a Pico. I am still working on a few broken consoles, but want to do a full video on how to load the pico. Hope this helps

Does this method work on a Wii U that got this error "naturally"? I've never hacked/modded my system, however I started receiving this error today, and can't get past the wii u splash screen when it tries to boot.
No, unless you’ve modded it and gotten a backup of the NAND and eMMC I believe the console is dead. Later down the line it is possible that there may be a method to restore the software, but as of now there is none. I’d keep the console around for you never know when a fix* may come!

I tried turning on my Wii U for the first time in over 5 years last week to the surprise of it not working. Unfortunately, I am not getting any error code so I am blind as to what the issue is with my Wii U. I am going to attempt to use this method to try and fix it to see if it works again. I'll post an update after I attempt to fix it.
UPDATE: Unfortunately this method did not work. The recovery menu would not boot up at all. I even tried recovery_menu_dc_init and it still did not work. I am at a loss for words. I have no idea why my Wii U suddenly stopped working as it was perfectly fine before and I took good care of it. There is no reason for it to have bricked at all. It doesn't help either that I don't get an error code so I don't know what the issue is. If anyone has any other suggestions for things I should try, throw them my way.
If you are not getting any error code, try replacing the clock battery 2032 and see if you get results.

I know this comes off sounding like complete BS BUT Nintendo is offering complete repairs til the year 2024 for any customers with a bricked firmware. Nintendo is shipping legit Brand New consoles after you sent it to them. They won't back up your data. Its also Free. They did this to their other consoles in the past with even the SNES console ending support it wayyyy after its end in 2003. I've seen it on gbatemp and two videos posted this year. @@dylanmeyer4840 So to make a case with big N, you have to sign into their Nintendo site. At the bottom are repair links. If the issues is solely the error code they'll honor a fix, they'll try and ask for money for shipping both ways. If they can't fix it which they Can they'll often just mail a new one out that is actually new, not a refurbished. They have held onto these for repairs but are tossing them otherwise

You could have corrupted memory unfortunately nothing can be done about that specifically unless you made a backup before in that case

Hey so I'm having a no display issue. I try to get into the recovery menu, with no luck. I've tried to re cache the USA nand information but I don't think it's working. Does the disc drive try to eject when you press the eject button in the recovery menu?
No eject is to move down in the menu. If you are not getting display try component/composite out
@@niesz Yupp I know the eject button moves down the menu, just trying to confirm if I was in the menu or not. So when your in the recovery menu, the disc drive doesn't make any noise when you try to move down the menu, by pressing the eject button? Also I've tried composite out with no luck. Pretty sure nand is dead

Up until you select a menu app and it freezes?
That is an odd one. If it is modified I would revert back to the stock firmware, and see if that fixes it, or do a restore of a older firmware
@@niesz never modified. Unit just randomly one day would freeze when trying to load into anything. It’s boost into the Wii U menu. I can select the titles and if it’s a disk game it will read and infinite load at the game load screen.
It will some times allow me to boot a arcade title like Mario 64 and if it’s successful in loading. It runs at like .5fps.
The next thing is I can short cut it into the settings menu and the moment I try to select any options in the menu, it freezes.

Good afternoon, I have the 160-0103 Bougfht the Pico and all went fine. But once I reset to the USA and rebooted the system, I still get the same error. Could I be doing somethign wrong? I used the repair to the handheld in the menu and it worked fine. But I can't get read of the error. Please help if you can.
If that doesn't fix it the NAND is corrupt and there isn't a good way to replace/fix it yet

Hey there, I just purchased a second hand Wii U and went to clear the old users data. I then tried to perform a system update and it froze at 89%. After waiting a bit I impatiently turned it off and back on again. I was then hit with a 162-4065 error code. After turning it on and only getting a black screen I was able to hold down the power button to do a soft reset that got me back to the Wii U set-up screen. I went through the options to set up my nintendo account and tried updating again. It was unable to update and I was then hit with the 160-0103 error code and now that is all I get when trying to turn on the console. Do you know if this method will help fix this issue?

@@Sunglasses_Emoji There is no disk in the console and it is not hacked/modded to my knowledge. When I went to download the new update, it seemed like the console froze so I turned it off and back on again which seems to have corrupted the OS.
My Wii U stopped working too, it doesn't show any error code though. Like I can boot it and get to the menu, but when I try starting a game or an app (even the system settings) it just loads forever. Any idea how to fix that?

Sorry it sounds like your EMMC is bad. Currently there isn't a fix for this. This video on is a repair if you modified your OS, and bricked it
mine Says it has a disc drive error but the only thing i can think of it being damaged is that i had spilled some pop makeint a game ccase sticky and then without remembering i placed a disc on top of the case and then when i tried to put the disc in the wiiu it worrked but got permantly stuck on the loading screen it was splatoon one so the loading screen was moveing just never finished

Hi i just bought a pico and i have added all the necessary files both on the pico and on my 32 gb sd card, when i boot the console and insert the pico, the console always turns itself off after like 3 second. I've tried over and over again, before the drive spin, after the drive spin, and both before and after "wii u" pops up one the screen. All i need is to access this recovery menu but i can't. Any tips? :/
Update: I was able to get in to the menu but the fix did not work for me appearantly, can someone please explain why? I'm so dissapointed rn :(
Having the same issue as yourself with the console turning itself off after a few seconds, did you have to reinstall the files or is it case of just kept trying?

That sounds like your internal memory is dying. I would be looking for a new consul at this point.
@@niesz I managed to solve the problem. I uninstalled the games and reinstalled them and they were fine. I have no intention of buying a new Wii U. Only when the OS gets currupted then I'd say it's game over, I intend to mod my Wii U in due course anyways so it's not like I care about playing it in an official capacity anymore. I just need the OS and GUI to work.
My Wii U gets no error message but gets stuck on boot screen on the main console. It was in it's box for a few years but always in perfect condition. Out of nowhere it won't work. Any suggestions? I sent to a shop and nothing.

Okay, so how do you fix one game that's downloaded onto the console, but won't play due to memory issues and you can't delete it either for the same reason and you can't reformat the console because you'll lose the ability to play the other games you downloaded onto external storage?
That is tuff. You will need to just wipe the device and start over

So I downloaded software to my SD card and Pico chip. I wait for the boot up process I plug in the chip and the console shuts off it won’t go into the black boot screen. Did I do something wrong? Possibly download the wrong software?
If you leave the device plugged in while you boot it up if it doesn't shut off then you have installed the software wrong

Hello, I’m unable to log into mine. Like I’m unable to make an offline mii without error 601 0103 and can’t log into my existing profiles offline. I know the system says it needs an update. Is this tutorial a fix for that?
For clarification:
If I make a new mii it crashes
If I log into my exist accounts it says sign in failed and takes me back to the menu regardless of whether or not I’m trying to log in offline.

I think it's a capture card. You can get it online. Most are USB-A but may work with an USB-C adapter.

My wii U failed during an update (the latest one 5.5.6), before everything went worng, it showed a message saying the update failed and it needed to restart, since then, it does not show anything on screen, it doesn't connect to the gamepad, when you try to turn it on, the red light goes blue, and stays constant blue, do you think this method would fix this issue? If it failed on update on 5.5.6 then you probably modded your wii u and didnt turn off the mod for it causing it to just fail

@@SadielHrz Cold Boot HaxChi was the old way of softmodding the Wii U. It use to be the only way to permanently mod the Wii U (the browser hack would reset when you rebooted). The problem with CBHC is that you needed a game from the app store. If you deleted or moved the game you would brick your Wii U. Thankfully CBHC is obsolete because of Tiramisu. With Tiramisu there's no real danger of bricking.

The repair video itself is fine, I definitely want to try this RPi Pico debrick option myself, but the music during the waiting periods is horrendous. Not only is it rap, but it's so annoyingly loud compared go the regular talking.

Looked into this a lot. You can create a new MLC so a naturally dead WiiU is fixable now…. However…. My WiiU is at firmware 3.0.1, and the Pico exploit works post 5.5.5. 😢

Try taking the battery out of the side. And letting it sit for about a day this got one Consol to work for me but not very reliably a fix.
