You’ve been extremely useful with the informations offered, so pleased with them. I’ve been looking at so many so called “advertisers “ lately that presented Portugal a sort of heaven in all aspects which now seems to be an utopia considering your current explanations. Thank you. I am based on Colchester right now but really considering a relocation central Portugal soon enough. I bared in my mind all your precious tips and wanted to thank you once more. So pleased with the time spent watching your tutorials. Wish you and to your beloved family all the best. As my mate is saying: “…keep the flame burning!”. 👍
As always, great video. I love that y’all are keeping it real. People need to know that living your dreams does not come without planning, researching, sacrifices AND a lot of physical labor or the money to pay for the physical labor. Most people would spend one afternoon pulling out brambles and decide the life was not for them. I admire anyone and all that give their blood sweat and tears to get there. That’s what makes it so wonderful when you get there. Best wishes 😊
Really interesting video. The responsibility for cleaning up your land, keeping yourself informed during fire risk season, mandatory evacuations and knowing about community safe places are exactly the same as in rural Australia. Probably because both countries have a similar fire risk.
Thanks a great honest video. Helpful for considerations. I live already almost 3 years at my own property in central Portugal. Very happy living here. I see you guys are as well. Hope you stay healthy and safe in this beautiful land.
My house in the Algarve is solar powered, never been connected to the grid, 21 years and I can confirm that solar is cheaper than mains electricity in the long run, all the solar equipment I have bought has paid for itself and is running at a profit. The equipment is getting cheaper all the time, I now have lithium batteries. You don’t run out of power after a few cloudy days, anyone who says this has not designed their system to match their needs or is totally unaware of how much they are consuming. You do not need a back up generator if you calculate the size of solar set up correctly.
@@projectportugal the Algarve gets about 46 hours per year more sunlight than you do so I think the 2% difference is negligible, remember it’s about light not sunshine the extra heat in the Algarve reduces the power produced so I think the results would be very similar
@@rachshaw3672 I can’t put links to useful information here. Either start by calculating your consumption or your budget or previous electricity bills. Panels are relatively cheap, calculate your roof size limitations. Inverter controllers 5 kw should meet most people’s needs, you will need to have enough batteries to pull the max 5kw via the inverter. Batteries have a limitation of how much you can draw at one time, called c rate e.g. if they are 1c means you would need at least 5kwh total battery capacity. Look at kits online as they include all parts and will give you a good idea of what is needed.
Just want to point out that Portugal has 2800 Megawatts of Oil Fired Power Stations, thats enough to run 28 million 1 bar electric fires per hour, so not as green there as you may think Nick
Hi Nick, just to let you know, I have a Solar Company in Spain, It is a bit of a misconceptions that solar is more expensive than grid power as if you were taking it like for like after a 5 year period solar is far cheaper (free but allowing for maintenance) panels and inverters are a lot cheaper now days and so much more efficient. If you were running a 3 bed property with aircon and heating with a heated pool and were electric cooking, washing, water heating, and running all power tools (so basically everything you needed for a family) The cost of Solar would be around 20,000 euros with enough lithium storage to allow for a week of overcast weather. I run a scheme in Spain that for a large system like this, you pay a 25% profit and pay monthly with no interest the same figure that you would pay your current electricity bill therefore the only cost is the 25% outlay as you would be paying the electricity bill anyway. The only extra requirement is we would service the system every year at a small cost. It works in Spain anyway
Yeah sounds great but you are in Spain not Central Portugal, if this set up was available here we may have considered it, I'm not anti solar and I hope I didn't come across that way, it's just that for us and many people wishing to move here, mains is the simplest and cheapest solution at the moment 😁
@@projectportugal it is a fine balance and a do agree on weighing up the cost. Me personally love the idea but the expense is ridiculous! Until the prices come down to the average persons level, going green is a luxury, which unfortunately we are all going to pay the price for through stealth green taxes. Plus they are as ugly as shit. 😂
@@The-Quinta ugly is true but now they are starting to make solar tiles that look like terracotta tiles so the whole roof can be solar without the panels, getting better all the time

Great info. We are considering moving as well and appreciate you taking the time to put this together. Much to consider and great to see it has worked out so well for you two.
Our 17th century manor house in a village near Tondela is large and rather cold during the winter. Our electric bills were 500 euros for a couple of months over winter. Ouch. Granted it's a large uninsulated house, currently space heaters supplement the four log burners. We will be getting solar power, and likely some different systems to heat different parts of the house.
One thing to do is get any water sources tested BEFORE you buy. I bought a property with a deep borehole that turned out to be contaminated with some kind of engine/lubricating oil, We had to drill another one. Is it legal to build reed bed systems for toilet waist? cheers for the vid.

You produced a really informative vlog👍 Some add-ons to your points Nick..In event of medical emergency your vehicle is your ambulance so you both need to drive. In event of fire..you need water pump and long hose. Reality were I am is 1 fire truck and 1 ambulance. I had never had a mobile phone until I came to Jamaica...when it dawned on me there were no phone's at the end of the road. Also, on the plus side if you have to collect mail from a postal office..at least you never get any junk mail .😅👍🌺🐠🦎🇯🇲
Thanks for a very helpful video guys. We love watching your channel. We are South Africans living and working in UK . Do you have any advise regarding villages to steer clear of and villages that you feel have a lot to offer? I'd like to find a house with rental potential that is easy walking distance to pubs or cafe's as well as reasonable access to markets, hardware and pharmacies. As in up to a mile walk.

Thank you both - so much useful information as usual. I presume you must have scouted out quite a number of places before buying. Do you have any suggestion re areas NOT to buy in Castelo Branco? In addition do you have recommendations for estate agents who have integrity(!!). Have you ever considered , roping , cabling your large tree . The one closest to house. Cabling it 2/3 ds up on opposite side of House would make it fall away .

Re- Max Castelo Branco, for this region, Health care costs, we don't have health insurance, so couldn't tell you, we use the Excellent Portuguese health service
Thanks for the tips. Plan on moving to central Portugal myself within the next two years, and at least I will have a bit of a checklist to consider now. Consider myself to be quite handy, but good to know about things like access, data coverage and being nice to the local government for planning and registration purposes. I am South African, so I suppose I would be in for a culture shock!
Another question, most of, out of, eurozone. Need “D7”. Or ask,do,take,? Portuguese nationality? . How about, if that somebody come from eurozone. what is that means buying home and living in Portugal?. Hope you have answer for me.😢. Thanks for the video, and tips. ❤
Lot of really good info !! Thanks I have to share... And with your permission maybe attach to one of my TH-cam's someday 💕 I loved the tour of your property.. I'd love to see a clip on every post !!
Sorry, quick question. How do you find the professionalism/standard of builders? I know you are central and I would expect higher standards in the bigger cities but most of what I have seen, they seem to be very basic and not particularly skilled tradesman, more like jack of all trades? Cheers.
There are some very skilled local builders, unfortunately the good ones are usually busy, (happens worldwide in many trades) I'd ask for recommendations from locals not expats. That way you'll tend to get a more genuine builder rather than a jack
The average wage is NOT €600, but around €1,000 per month. This is of course biased upwards by high salaries in the big cities, especially for those working for international companies, so the average wage in a rural area will be a lot lower. The minimum wage is €705 per month, paid over 14 moths, so equates to €822.50 monthly over 12 months. Just think, that's less than €10,000 per annum.
Hi nick, Is it possible to get building work out in Central Portugal, or is there a call for it , iam a general builder. You said its quite a poor area and wages are not very much. Your doing great work anyway , nice to see
Is there a income/pension requirement for immigration and to live off. We came to France before the UK left the EU and just turned up and worked remotely on low incomes. Now, you have to have 1300€ net each a month and we wouldn’t hav3 enough income to move here now.
Do you know anything about classic cars vans etc re matriculation, also income, what, if you know, is air bnb,/tourist situation like, prior to covid. Is there a big tourist trade? Difficult for anyone.
Thanks A wonderful overview of reality. I wonder you repeated that you can't make a living. I see you can't plan on selling and making money off your produce etc....BUT CAN YOU LIVE WITHOUT MONEY? Living off the land. If your solar is paid off and the water source is good? Is that an unrealistic Dream?
certain things you can't "make" yourself, medications of any kind, professional services, eg doctor, dentist, there comes a point you need one. Repairs to your vehicle, certain food items (coffee, tea etc). Unless you have a skill you can barter with in exchange of what you need, a certain amount is necessary
No, you still have property taxes, and obviously if you have a vehicle, that's a cost, water needs to be filtered if that's your option, and solar wears out over time, feed for animals etc,etc
Many expats, like myself were fortunate to retire on a full works pension and full government pension, even though It was 10 yrs before I was eligible. If you can keep a postal address in your home country so you can get your renewed bank card. Furthermore..just sell to family your original home..that is one big expense eliminated. It was not true for us that receiving rental income was a benefit..after a period refurbishment has to be done, and the taxman does not dissappear just because you are abroad. Good Luck b Nick's Vlog is a really good trigger for so many aspects connected with relocation abroad.
Darn. I forgot about taxes !! And it is nice I get Social Security $700/mo. If my place was built and all set up I may be able to save some of tge SS for taxes. I haven't gone to the doctor or taken meds for years. I've lived a good life and am willing to just die.. yeah the vehicle gas to get groceries... where I am I can't grow a garden or probably raise chickens. I'm just a roughing it, hermit type gal. A few young people live off their land but yeah I see your point Nick.
A very important consideration . Electrical that can handle the draw for a submersible pump. Because your not getting that to work on solar.

Great video Nick! Lot's of good info.
Thanks for a very helpful video guys. We love watching your channel. We are South Africans living and working in UK . We will be coming to Castello Branco region in October to look for a property and then retire. We are not looking for a large piece of land nor a massive rebuild. We would appreciate you letting us know if you have seen anything that you would consider appropriate. Thank you.
Great video as always Nick! Great pointers! We will be visiting Portugal this year for the purpose of buying a property. Love the views of your property. Hope to connect with a few TH-camrs including you and your lovely wife during our trip. Cheers and take care
Message us ❤️
Thank you very much for this really helpful video!
Best wishes from Germany.
Do you have any advise regarding villages to steer clear of and villages that you feel have a lot to offer? I'd like to find a house with rental potential that is easy walking distance to pubs or cafe's as well as reasonable access to markets, hardware and pharmacies. As in up to a mile walk.
Most of the villages in this area have exactly what you described
Oh Nick I always love your way to say " just saying"
All the points are so well put thanks so much. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Stay well and safe.
❤️🌹❤️🌹❤️🌹❤️🌹
Thankyou for sharing, that was most informative and honest.
Thank you about your advices :)
I do respect the people who want to live there but not for me do not like the houses have seen a view that they want to renovate some of these houses are in the worst state you seen and you have to be very handy to do this but thanks for the information you gave 😊
Really enjoyed the video. Just wondered how you guys got on learning the language and how long it takes. Me and hubby are learning now but nothing beats being there day to day ??just interested how you did it , ??xx
We are miles away from learning it!! I know enough now to make very basic phone conversations, and Andrea is really struggling, but- the best place to learn is here, don't use any apps, the best thing is Liz from, talk the streets
@@projectportugal yea we watch Liz quite a lot , she is fab. Thanks so much for replying :0)
@@rachaelharris7088 don't stress it's not vitally important, I know people who have been here 10 yes and can only say hello
@@projectportugal cool, thanks 😊...
Thank you both - so much useful information as usual. I presume you must have scouted out quite a number of places before buying. Do you have any suggestion re areas NOT to buy in Castelo Branco?
In addition do you have recommendations for estate agents who have integrity(!!). I have been watching some who have hyper inflated the prices aimed at foreign buyers and stating that buyers can live in barns/ruins that do not have urban article.
Can't say about any we haven't experienced but Re-Max in Castelo Branco were ace
@@projectportugal good to know Nick!! Will keep an eye out for Remax properties.
Hope the cream on top of the lemon curd by Cindy was just the ticket for bringing a taste of UK! Best to both of you.
I would like to know about any germans there?
Our neighbour Andreas is German, there are quite a few in this area
@projectportugal Oh yay, that's good to know, thanks Nick 😊
Thanks for making this, very informative, we were looking at farms but think we shall try for a house with a decent sized garden, back ain't what it used to be. On another topic, during your Rugby days did you ever know ( Sonny) Liston? Cheers bit late but hope you had a good St Pirans day. Roy
Yes I played with him at Liskeard Looe, if it's the right guy, sadly dead now☹️
Have you ever considered , roping , cabling your large tree .
The one closest to house.
Cabling it 2/3 ds up on opposite side of House would make it fall away .
Don't quite understand, would make it fall away!!? It's not falling down! And leans parallel to the house
@@projectportugal just worst case scenario.
Being so tall.
As you have strapping on Almond. Something similar.just in case a storm
TY .
@@johnoleary9317 don't think it'll be an issue, the strapping on the Almond is trying to bend it back upright, we had strong winds when it was younger and then it grew like mad, that tree is only 2 yes old😁😁
Great video & excellent advice, certainly had me thinking. Especially like the info on the utilities made a lot of sense.
Could you recommend any Portuguese Estate agents please?
How do you go on with Health care costs compared to the UK?
Many thanks and all the very best to yourselves x
Re- Max Castelo Branco, for this region,
Health care costs, we don't have health insurance, so couldn't tell you, we use the Excellent Portuguese health service
@@projectportugal thanks very much .
Is the Portuguese health care free for expats ?
Thanks for the tips. Plan on moving to central Portugal myself within the next two years, and at least I will have a bit of a checklist to consider now. Consider myself to be quite handy, but good to know about things like access, data coverage and being nice to the local government for planning and registration purposes. I am South African, so I suppose I would be in for a culture shock!
Thanks for sharing!!
Another question, most of, out of, eurozone. Need “D7”. Or ask,do,take,? Portuguese nationality? . How about, if that somebody come from eurozone. what is that means buying home and living in Portugal?. Hope you have answer for me.😢. Thanks for the video, and tips. ❤
I don't think you need a visa if you are planning to live in Portugal and come from the EU, a visa is required for people coming from outside the eu
Oh, immediat reply. Thank you so much.
You are a brilliant couple 😊😊😊
Also, forgot to say, good informative video, thankyou, jim
Outstanding advice many thanks to you both.
Lot of really good info !! Thanks I have to share... And with your permission maybe attach to one of my TH-cam's someday 💕 I loved the tour of your property.. I'd love to see a clip on every post !!
Happy St. Piran's day!
Sorry, quick question. How do you find the professionalism/standard of builders? I know you are central and I would expect higher standards in the bigger cities but
most of what I have seen, they seem to be very basic and not particularly skilled tradesman, more like jack of all trades? Cheers.
There are some very skilled local builders, unfortunately the good ones are usually busy, (happens worldwide in many trades) I'd ask for recommendations from locals not expats. That way you'll tend to get a more genuine builder rather than a jack
@@projectportugal great advice cheers.
wonderful property, it is a pride for you, and the circumstances of life are hard everywhere
Thank you for all the info, another great video 👍👍👍
The average wage is NOT €600, but around €1,000 per month. This is of course biased upwards by high salaries in the big cities, especially for those working for international companies, so the average wage in a rural area will be a lot lower. The minimum wage is €705 per month, paid over 14 moths, so equates to €822.50 monthly over 12 months. Just think, that's less than €10,000 per annum.
That was no rant but good background information for all who are considering a move to the Iberian peninsula
Great video!! Lots of super helpful information for anyone with plans to move.
Very informative thank you 😁
What a great video, really enjoyed that one 👍
Hi nick,
Is it possible to get building work out in Central Portugal, or is there a call for it , iam a general builder.
You said its quite a poor area and wages are not very much.
Your doing great work anyway , nice to see
Yeah it's possible there's plenty to do but you'll only get 70€ a day
Thanks for the informative video 👍💯🤗
Reality check. Thank you Nick and Andrea.
I wish I was in a position to move to Portugal, but I'm in Canada. Maybe one day I will be able to at least go for the winter months. 🙂👍👍👍👍
Is there a income/pension requirement for immigration and to live off. We came to France before the UK left the EU and just turned up and worked remotely on low incomes. Now, you have to have 1300€ net each a month and we wouldn’t hav3 enough income to move here now.
I think there is now, but we came here before Brexit
Fantastic video Nick, just what I needed to hear whilst planning my recce for next month. I have sent you an email with further questions.
Good rant👍🙂
Hi, hello, how much cost me alone to live. Thank you
Depends on your tastes
Nice video
Great video
Lot's of good info and sugestions,,, you should have taken point each,,, a little ping pong. :-)
Do you know anything about classic cars vans etc re matriculation, also income, what, if you know, is air bnb,/tourist situation like, prior to covid. Is there a big tourist trade? Difficult for anyone.
Any car is tricky to matriculate, but possible, if it's been altered in any way-- nearly impossible, Not masses of tourism here but worth a try
Hi dont forget St PIRANS DAY 5TH MARCH
On it
Thanks A wonderful overview of reality.
I lived without electric for 8 mos before solar. No real biggie.. I did have to buy water.none on property. and drive to cut my wood.
