    This approach is basically the way I ended up making decisions without having heard about Fisher before. Through trial and error and considerable time writing down theories, pondering over the logic of it all etc I've ended up doing a lot of the things mentioned here. For example i once took the entire cybersecurity sector and began comparing numbers, i figured out how to judge their numbers relative to each other and made a formula for that sector and calculated it for each stock, i narrowed it down to a dozen or so stocks. those i put in a watchlist and left it sitting for years out of a lack of money and because i felt i wasn't ready to risk the tiny amount of money i had. now years later all the stocks are in the green and on average beat the market considerably.

    Common stocks uncommon profits is the greatest investment book ever written, it doesn't give you a step by step investment strategy like some books but it gives you the general framework needed when looking for great opportunities. This book along with some Peter Lynch and accounting knowledge is all you need to succeed.

    3:00 Secret tip: "Don't buy airlines" followed by a picture of Warren Buffet. The fact that Berkshire Hathaway owns airline stocks requires further examination. You should make a video series on famous investors breaking their own rules or styles that are evolving with the times. I think a lot can be learned from these 'exceptions' so that readers understand how to apply these strategies that were written half a century ago.
    I haven't looked into it too closely but some ppl speculate that Berkshire considers the competitive landscape in airlines to be different now than in the past. I have also heard ppl say that the economics of the industry have changed due to more efficient planes. I think an exploration like this can help readers contextualize these strategies and techniques and understand which are universal truths that can be applied to today's market and which are things that were true in the past but have changed.

    • @TheSwedishInvestor
      @TheSwedishInvestor  5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      This is a very good comment. Thank you for the suggestion about looking at exceptions, I'll make sure to write that down.
      To be honest, I haven't kept myself up-to-date regarding Berkshire Hathaway and its current portfolio, but I see now that it has a quite a few airline companies in it: www.cnbc.com/berkshire-hathaway-portfolio/ . When I made the comment in the video I thought about historical quotes of Buffett such as:
      "I now have an 800 number I call every time I think about buying a stock in an airline. I say, “I am Warren and I am an air-aholic.”
      "“The worst sort of business is one that grows rapidly, requires significant capital to engender the growth, and then earns little or no money. Think airlines. Here a durable competitive advantage has proven elusive ever since the days of the Wright Brothers. Indeed, if a farsighted capitalist had been present at Kitty Hawk, he would have done his successors a huge favor by shooting Orville down.“
      But conditions and stock prices change, and of course there will always be a price where even the most competitive industry is an attractive one from an investment perspective.
      My "recommendation" in the video must be taken with a pinch of salt though, that's why I did it in a whisper 😊

    The best way to scuttlebutt, is to literally walk out of your house, walk down the street, and observe. Which products and services are consumers ACTUALLY buying and using?
    If you are thinking of investing in a company you have never heard of, ask why am I investing in a company I have never heard of?

    • @mdaniels6311
      @mdaniels6311 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, this is not practial for lots of companies. I cannot leave my house and find out how Google/Alphabet are doing. The internet is one of the best resources for scuttlebutt. It isn't perfect, but for practical purposes it is likely the most efficient. Yes, your method works in a few specific industries like retail, fast-food, restaurants, and maybe a few others.. but in most cases, this isn't practical. I cannot leave my house and infd out how Amazon are doing.. for example.

    @ayushzaveri8193 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Which method do you personally prefer? Value or growth strategies?
    I find that a lot of what Fisher says is contradicted by Graham in the Intelligent Investor- especially about how we first filter companies based on value and then look at the business. Essentially, identify what is cheap first and then filter based on what's worthy of investment or not. Graham also says that margin of safety arises when the earnings yield over many years exceeds the going rate if goverment bonds.
    Where growth investing loses out is that it makes you forget to ask "how much" before buying any stock

    • @TheSwedishInvestor
      @TheSwedishInvestor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Ayush Zaveri! This is a good question. I'd love to expand on this one, but it will probably have to be in a video instead of in the comment section. In my own approach I demand value, but I don't mind some growth in there too. Buffett would say that they are variables in the same equation. Investment returns = Value x Growth, or something similar to that (this is not mathematically correct, you'll have to think in abstract terms)

      Overall, the sector has been a terrible investment during the last decades. Low barriers of entry, two very dominant suppliers, almost no customer loyalty ... these are all factors that have ruined the profit margins of the industry. With that being said - an airline company can be a good investment. You just need to find one cheap enough to compensate for the competitiveness of the industry.
