Essential viewing for the new defence secretary perhaps. In the 80's those of us who joined in the 60's thought we were becoming a laughing stock, on reflection it looked like the Grand Fleet compared with today's Navy.
When the iron curtain came down I thought no more of this war & the money saved could be used for health care & education etc. "No". These bstds need more wars to feed their bank accounts.
Bit too late for my dads era. His last two ships were HMS Salisbury (out of Plymouth) during the Cod War and HMS Chichester in HK. I remember him weeping during the Falklands campaign as he was besties with the Jaunty on HMS Sheffield

A work colleague of mine has a son who is training to be a submariner. Nearly 90% of that training has been on land. His son has had wait an eternity to get on a sub as there is such few of them and hardly any go to sea.
Failed my GNK, got back classed a week from Anson 08 to Walker 09 in 1979. Thick 😂😂. 3:2 NAMET. Used to need 7:7 just to get through Raleigh. It then went up to 9:9, and everyone thought WTF? I have no idea what it is now.
The really shocking thing is that the whole of Europe's Navies combined would be hard pressed to match what the Royal Navy could deploy in the mid-1980s (let alone anytime before then).

AH HELL! I HOPE HIS FRIEND SURVIVED IF HE DIDN'T GOD BLESS HIM
Oh to have a fleet these days!!!! We've barely got much more than a flotilla now! 😥😥😥

They've been getting rid of the country since the 50s in multi generational warfare. Why wouldn't they have been getting rid of it's Navy?
35 submarines when I joined up in 78 weve barely got eight operational now
and most of those are undergoing maintenance or upgrades currently. We have 2 ? deployable SSNs and 1 SSBN

I could have used this in my general naval knowledge (GNK) exam at Raleigh in the late 80s. If you know you know!!!

Nice video showing the time when NATO including the USA were focused on real war and maintaining readiness and the ability to counter any threat.
This looks and sounds a lot older than 83 based on production / presentation.
It does doesn't it, it looks a lot like the 50s or early 60s films 👍

I noted the narrative, "our fleet is the largest after the Superpowers" yup even back then we were a little Navy from a little Country
