Arcade Game: Paperboy (1984 Atari)

- A newspaper delivering game where you play a role of paperboy delivering newspaper to subscribers Monday through Sunday The Game starts out as 10 customers and 10 non-customers. Customers are bright houses and non-customers are dark houses. You must deliver to newspaper to customers by throwing them to their mailbox or front porch. If you fail to deliver customers newspaper damage their property, you will lose customers. If you lose all 10 customers, then paperboy will get fired and the game is over. Non-customers' dark houses are loaded with targets where you throw papers at doors, windows, etc. Hitting these targets earns you breakage bonus points displayed in the center of the top screen. If paperboy loses a customer, the house will turn from bright to dark showing a target paperboy throws to earn breakage points. The map will show which customers are lost or remained before the start of the game. Paperboy can only carry a maximum of 10 papers but can be stocked when you pick up a stack of newspapers lying either on grasses, sidewalks, or roads. While making deliveries, paperboy must avoid obstacles causing collisions by either riding on sidewalks, front yards, or roads your will result in a loss of life. If all lives are lost, paperboy quits and the game is over. Non-subscribers are also hostile and attack paperboy whenever they see him. If customers property are damaged, they will also attack paperboy. At the end of each delivery, a bonus round occurs giving players have a chance to sharpen their skills by guiding paperboy to the training course. Obstacles are filled with targets and ramps to jump. No lives are lost when failing to reach the finish line.

Thank you for the video. Wow!!! Classic game. When this game first came out, there were actual handlebars on the arcade that you used to control it. I was not able to get passed Friday (I was also about 8 years old when it came out). What I remember the most is when the crazy guy ran into you, the character would say "you realize of course, this means war." Shit, life was different. Thank you for the flashback.

Es un videojuego de recreativas (Arcade) producido por Atari: el sistema en el que corre este juego es el Atari System 2 estrenado ese mismo año 1984, pero la mayoría de los juegos usando ese PCB son de 1986.
Será de 8 bit, pero tiene una enorme resolución y música sintetizada con calidad digna de ser para 16 bits.

There are funny things you can make happen when you hit things with papers. Like the burgalar trying to break in or the 2 fighting guys. Lots of things to try.

Could you send me your mame.ini file? Your pixels are so sharp yet not stretched out. Did you just turn the filter off?
Yes, I turned off all the filters such as bilinear filtering as they ruin the pixels in the game as it makes the video blurry. You will also need to disable the snapbilinear so the blurriness does not appear in the AVI files when you record the games directly from mame.
My god, someone tell me this version belongs to which platform? because this graphic surpasses the NES version (which, by the way, the nes version is crap) and Paperboy 2 Snes

They both use Yamaha soundchips.
This uses the YM2151 while the Genesis uses the YM2612
Not merely Yamaha chips, they're both very similar FM chips.
This however still reminds me of the got milk TV commercial where, the paperboy's mother had to make the delivery for him. Since the paperboy had busted up both of his arms, which is quite ridiculous. As Dr. Robert Keller says, "you can keep a cast off your arm otherwise you're too slow to protect yourself." He also said, "when you go for a snack have an apple or a cheese sandwich and no candy bars." He said these things, back then during the entire 1980s. 😳 🙄 😑 😒 😐

What system is this for? Or is it arcade? Looks and sounds WAY better than the NES... Played a good amount of the GB version myself.

It honestly looks easier/less frustrating than the GB/NES version, ability to grind to an almost complete halt and whatnot, but looks can be deceiving ofc. Just a bit funny to me IF the home versions are more difficult?

Get the Genesis version
The arcade version of Paperboy was the best one out there. The console versions were awful by comparison. Even Paperboy 2, which was a 16-bit console release (SNES), was graphically inferior to the Atari arcade version of Paperboy.
