The best music trend of the past year was clearly the rebirth of the sea shanty on tiktok -- after all, what better way to keep morale high during the lockdowns of the past year than a genre of music designed to foster a sense of community on extended seafaring journeys? Here's my ragtime version (with a few variations) of "Soon May The Wellerman Come," as recently popularized by The Longest John.

Bravo!! This makes me more happy than I can possibly imagine!
Whoa- I love you longest johns! You are my favorite band ❤
Who else is here before this completely blows up \/
Nice to see you here Longest Johns
Its the boys!
Thank you for providing the inspiration!
Killer playing. I just wish more people knew how hard that stride bass is. It's like running full speed at a house with a key in outstretched hand, hoping the key finds the lock before your face finds the door.
Nice :D
I love your analogy.
I have learned several pieces by Joplin and I'm always a little disappointed by how easy it looks because it sure takes a lot of work. It kind of just looks like bouncing around carefree but internally one really has to focus to land on the right chord.
@@itsjustbree9267 too true I always have a Scott Joplin piece learning on the side lol
Lmao most accurate example I've ever heard.
YES XD
When the world of the wild west and pirates collide. This music is beautiful dude.
The wild west and pirates were not only very close historically they even overlap.
Pirates and Cowboys could have (and probably did) run into each other.
@@theungentleman Technically you are correct as pirates have existed all throughout history. But, I imagine that the original post was referencing the Golden Age of Piracy (a lá Pirates of the Caribbean) which existed during the early 18th century, long before the Wild West and Cowboys as they, as is culturally recognized, existed during the mid-to-late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Wellerman is not from the recognized age of piracy, ie the early 18th century. Sure, it is a sea shanty, but it is one that was sung by whalers/was written during the mid-to-late 19th century.
@@timothyfandrich1965 You're totally right, I confused the "Wild West" with the age of the american frontier.
Yeah... I just said pirates because "whalers" doesn't have the same ring to it :/ My thought process was more along the lines of "Wild West" and "Pirates" as genres.
My great grandparents had a sheet music store and I was lucky enough to inherit their inventory. Stride, ragtime, cakewalk, I could listen to this music all day.
Oooh, I hope you still have it all and scan it and upload to bookshare or Gutenberg or something 🎼 🎶 🎵
The arrangement you didn't knew you needed.
The arrangement I knew I needed when I saw Scott Bradlee and a piano.
but damn did we need it
The arrangement I KNEW I needed to KNOW.
Hi, where are you from ?
I ask because we have the same « unusual »name !
@@bully33 Hi Maxim! I'm from Belgium!
Listened so many wellerman versions, why youtube waited so long before to show me that ? Thanks sooooooo much. No sun outside, but your music is the perfect medicine to find back the "taste of life".
This took me back... my grandaddy played ragtime and he and my piano teacher would go round robin, him teaching me syncopation, bass vamps, and driving my scales in the treble, she wanting me to learn slow & steady scales & arpeggios. I miss those days!
So glad to find someone keeping rag piano alive and well... thank you!
The Wellerman Rag. . . Well done you.
the gorillaz and sandstorm quotes were hilarious. great arrangement as always.
Yes!!!
Can I get a timestamp on these moments?
@@narulizard Gorillaz at 1:00!
@@narulizard Sandstorm at 1:24
wow, went completely over my head, thanks for pointing it out!
No love for Clint Eastwood by Gorillaz at 1:00? Killer arrangement and performance!
Oh idk bout you but I truly loved it
Also there were more than just that referenced!!!
@@comit8077 I loved it, too! I heard a handful of other references but at the time I saw it I didn't see anyone pointing out the Gorillaz one.
Did I hear darude sandstorm at 1:15?
Thank you for brining passion and power of music to the world. In these times your talent makes you are a hero by actually bringing warmth to the world. Could even save lives. I bow to thee!
This guy's important ppl don't do what he does! Thanks Scottie!
I only heard the name a few weeks ago and this classic ditty has been fleetingly stuck in my head ever since. This helps to make the perpetual looping more nuanced, thank you.
Watching you play the piano is like.... watching magic happen.
Your hands move with such speed and precision watching you play is amazing and a real wonder to the ears.
I love getting lost in the music you play.
The crazy thing is when he does those Easter Eggs on the fly for all of us.
Scott revolutionized youtube song covers...everybody is doing it now...
For those of you not familiar with the piano: this is phenomenal playing!
1:56 I love that part!
I don't know what the best thing is (beside the music) about this video, the vest or the "turn and look" on the last note.
Finally, youtube has figured out what I want on my dash.
This is awesome ❤❤❤❤
Pas une fausse note !! Quelle maîtrise du clavier, félicitations !
Man even Scott Bradlee's getting into the sea shanty stuff. It's getting everywhere.
Q: Do you prefer Sea Shanty or Jazz?
Me: yes
Thanks!
I'm only here from the algorithm, but I genuinely keep forgetting that you're an already fantastically talented pianist outside of the Jukebox!
Excellente musique, excellent pianiste !
Just started to learn this on low whistle, put my whistle away to look into the tube to find this. Sometimes moments are simply perfect.
Very cool. Lilting with Great tempo control too
Always smooth sailing with Captain Bradlee at the helm! 😉 👍💖🎶
You always have a way with words, Betty! Well said.
Wow, brilliant technique and arrangement 😮 I m in awe❤
This certainly boosted MY morale
Awesome job with one of my favorite songs.
Why is the rum gone?
Well, because you forgot to buy rum, alright?
@@robertrobertson4181 yes, but why is the rum gone?
@@chrisvanschothorst8075 well, that's an interesting question.
🤣
Nicely done...
Great fun as always with EPIC Easter eggs!
❤ I love you
Left me speechless!
Absolutly perfect and a true display of talent.
Thank you for a beautiful and unique rendition of the Wellerman.
My flabber is ghasted. Superb.
This combines the two best musical genres 👌
brilliant
That is so impressive, I can see how much work you've put in to that. Great job and thank you for sharing!
Utterly brilliant. Thank you.
This was so perfect! I think we need more ragtime sea shanties now... a lot more...
Indeed, that's a GREAT combination.
This guy is terrific. He makes it look so easy.
Everyone raves about Johnny May. Yeah, he's amazing but this ragtime rendition is so cool! You're an incredible pianist.
Try saying that when you're drunk 🤣
Bravissimo!! I mean, The Wellerman's a fun melody to start with, but your creativity cranked the fun factor way up there. What. A. Hoot!! Thanks for sharing this with us!
BRILLIAN! Best cover i've EVER heard!
첫 음절 듣고 설마 ..
내 귀를 의심하고 다시 돌려 들었네요 .

I love ragtime so much - this sounds awesome! 🙂 I liked the blended styles towards the end.
Great Skills!

Ragtime Wellerman....that was AWESOME!! I was "chair dancing," very much enjoying your playing, sir!
I just love this so much. I have listened to it several times a day since I discovered it. I tend to get obsessed.....but who wouldn't ? Amazing 🥰
Talent!
Parfait !!
i am amazed by the number of different styles
Wow, this is great!
What is that amazing sound at 1:56? It stopped me in my tracks. Is that a mashup/cover of another tune? Wow.
I'm obsessed! Where can I find sheet music?
Description
Toujours merveilleux pour un ancien pianiste !
Excellent muse, greetings from Poland.

Fantastic!
Wellerman in this style sound a lot like Joshua fit the battle of Jerico
And like the intro/accompaniment to "When I Get Low, I Get High."
I agree!
Yeah, it does!!
Oh my goodness, it really does!
Yessss!! I was wondering why it sounded so familiar
Fun ! Loved it !
Loved it!!👏🏻 💯 just subscribed
It's a real wonder!
Can you mashup Wellerman with Levan Polkka? I'm gonna request it on mashup Monday the next time I'm able to view the stream live, I keep mixing then together in my head accidentally and I'm certain they work well together!
I also thought that I heard a lot of llevan polka in this one!
Pretty sure @thekiffness did one
Just to note, the song is called Ievan Polkka. That's a capital i, not a lower-case L. Ieva is the Finnish form of the name Eve or Eva, so "Ievan Polkka" translates to "Eve's Polka".
@@BlameTaw Thank you very much for that information! That's exactly why capital i should have the bars.
Who is a game
Oh man! That was fantastic!!!❤
Look no further than Scott Bradlee / PMJ to spice up your songs! Love this reimaging to a ragtime tune.
Blew my mind like all your work does!
Nicely played Captain Bradlee!

REALLY liked how the song started IMMEDIATELY when the video came up! Amazing playing! Wow! Thanks!
1:15 are you playing what I think you’re playing 😂 This whole thing was so good.
Must be, because now there's sand _everywhere_
@@momcat2223 it's coarse, rough, and angers a Jedi Knight
@@andruchung3066 i recognise what he's playing but I just can't remember what it is or figure out how it relates to sand

i thought i was the only one who caught that. reminded me of jweihaas's version
Clint Eastwood hit me like a freight train. Really fun arrangement and excellent playing.
Sing us a song, you're the Wellerman
Sing us a song about whales
Cause it's the dead of winter in Otakou
And the blubber is colder than ice
y e s
Well, it's five o'clock on a Saturday
Staring out at the ocean again
Until you see a tail
You've spotted a whale
And you know a fight's gonna begin
Your captain's a good man, tenacious
And he never gives up on his prey
And you know it's for whales
He's been lifting the sails
So you sigh, and prepare for the day
Oh, la, la, la la la la...
Sing us a song, you're the Wellerman
Sing us a song tonight
'Cause our arms are all tired, and we're hungry
And music makes us feel all right
It's been forty days, and you're wondering
If this creature will ever give in
The whaleboats are gone
So are Patrick and John
And you really don't think you can win
*A ship full of ghosts you've become now*
*As the whale still runs on in the deep*
*You all curse your captain, and still nothing happens*
*And you all wish for nothing but sleep*
*An eternity spent on this whaler*
*The curse of the creed follows you*
*The whale's haunting cries*
*Echo through the skies*
*And you all sail on to your doom*

Oh heavens, this brings back many a piano lesson from when I was 14! I had a wonderful jazz piano teacher that was giving me a good grounding in ragtime style music, and seeing the beginning of this video, with the left hand playing a "stride" style brought every one of those lessons back. Very, very nicely done! You've earned yourself another subscriber, sir!
Fantastic and uplifting as always, thanks for the smile today.
...did anyone else hear the acapellascience covid sea shanty lyrics in the back of their mind while listening? This comment will absolutely show the moment we're living in when someone sees it in a few years.
Yes, I love acapellascience! Soon may the vaccine come.
@@nicholassullivan6105 Now you have me thinking of Covid related new lyrics for that old Australian sea shanty. ... *Soon may the vaccine come, to relieve the lockdown tedium* Hmm, that will require a bit more work before it's up to scratch.
Wonderful skills.
Watched again - one more thing to say.

Yes...the Whiskey Bar piano! Seeing the hammers go is almost as good as an overhead view of him playing.
Agreed! I like this angle.
Right you are, Doc! Love it! 👍👌
Yes, they were mesmerizing. It had me thinking that someone should make something like an old WMP visualizer that simulates hammers like this. It looks a little like a waveform you might have seen back in the day.
I loved all of the tempo and style changes
