German TV reportage of 2007. German TV station ZDF dumps Neo Rauch: "skilled painting mastership", "overloaded works", but not as strong as the works of Max Ernst or Francis Bacon. An artist who arrived at the art olymp at the age of 50, but - according to the German TC channel ZDF - that he will stay there is questionable.

Was will der Kritiker? Einen anderen Rauch? Dann soll er die Bilder malen, die er haben möchte; es ist so schwer eine eigene Formen- und Themensprache zu entwickeln und dies handwerklich gut umzusetzen. Ist hier einem ostdeutschen Erfolgsmaler ein Neider auf die Fährte gekommen?

The kitsch is part of the point. It’s pointing out the absurdity of social realism in communist totalitarianism by bringing surrealism to the table and in so doing expressing the malaise of late capitalism, devoid of ideology, with out of control technological progress and yet inescapably tied to the past.
