That's just why I think sleep is comforting, yet also haunting
I didn't realise Carriere was relatively unknown, so having been a fan of his for a long time (not to gloat, I'm genuinely just quite surprised), finding that out gave me this weird mix of pride in being a fan, but also this innate sadness. His work deserves to be seen and known and loved. But when I think about it, it almost seems fitting that he should be a little obscure, given how ghostly and dreamlike his paintings are.
I've know Carrière's works for many years, but I'm not too surprised he's not very well known since even in France most people don't know him, unfortunately. If you visit Paris, definitely go see some works by his at Le Petit Palais, the best not famous museum in Paris (and it's free!). However, I think he might get some more recognition soon since French Art Dealer Kamel Mennour decided to organize shows in his galleries.
Anyone who has studied art history knows his work. He has a pretty solid reputation. He's very limited expressively and aesthetically speaking but an absolute master of his peculiar quasi-mystical, spectral idiom. And yes, I agree that SLEEP is his masterwork, prefiguring Francis Bacon and the surrealists, the slippage of the rational mind into the subconscious.
Thanks so much for covering Carriere! There is a huge painting of his in the Rodin Museum in Paris (I think Carriere gave it to Rodin as a present) - if you're there, don't miss it! It is 5 metres long and almost 2 metres tall, and it depicts a shady, obscure theatre auditorium with people looking down at the stage (the title is Belleville Theatre). When I first saw the painting, I thought it was nonfigurative: it looks like brown clouds, smoke, and some dim, yellow light (that is very Rembrandt-ish), but if you look at it for a few seconds more, faces of an audience and an auditorium emerges from the chaos. I still don't understand from where did he get the courage to even begin a work like that: "hmmm, let me paint a shady, badly lit theatre auditorium on 10 square metres of canvas." It is just nuts: the painting is so big that the curators could not really find a proper place for it in the Rodin-mansion. It is hung over a staircase near a window, so when the sun is shining outside half of the painting reflects back the light and is not properly visible. You wouldn't get a postcard-replica in the museum shop either (even though I really wanted): it must be really difficult to photograph the magic that Carriere painted. One of the best overlooked painters of all time - thanks again for letting more people know about him!

Another fabulous artist of a later period is Lucien LEVY DHURMER (1865-1953). His symbolist pastel portraits are etheral and haunting. If you seen one in person, you'll never forget it.
Only by noticing the feminine hand with sharp nails resting gently in the painting called "Sleep" could I see more of it in context. Thank you for sharing this artist.
@3:17 the image struck me as if it was a child in a photograph but just beyond of the focal plane of the image such that some of the face is rendered more precisely than others that are inches further beyond. Part of the lips and the nostril are both near photorealistic, and the rest is less so by degrees.
Ok, I like Art. I'm not a snob and hate people who are. I see something and immediately know if I like it. I don't analyze, I don't ponder, it's inherent. This= is fantastic. I'm SO glad I watched this. I saw the suggestion and was pulled to the piece right away. Even if I don't like an artist= I can appreciate that they are talented. I don't much care for the Impressionists, though I understand that they are groundbreaking works. I like Francis Bacon, Jalf Sparnay, Escher, Dali, Gieger. I Worship Vermeer. All the stuff I like isn't anything alike, it just resonates with me. This artist- is going to be in my like collection now and I will get to explore him and his life and works now, thank you. It's the Man Who Paints the Ghosts of People. Brilliant stuff.
I had a recurring dream when I was a kid that I will not relate here. But in the early days of the internet I found an artist who painted the image from my dream over and over again in every one of his paintings. I found it one day in the computer lab University, and I've never been able to find it since in over 20 years.

Is it a body wrap in white cloth? I dunno what the smoking fogs supposedly maybe a white cloth ghost with 2 glowing white eyes & right hand sharp fingers? (at first I saw like horse but not sure with the weird noodly)
New artist for me, so an interesting look at his work. Most seem blurry & shapeless or rather indistinct thus unappealing to me. I did however like sleep & more so the portrait of Rodin.
I have a wonderful lithographe by Leonore Fini that resembles this work. I live it and it has followed me over the world and hangs in my bedroom, very ghostly.
Strange. The painting Sleep, my highschool school had a copy of it. Its not the real one though, its only a plastic photocopy. The picture was hanging on our school clinic...and it was very creepy. A lot of the students don't want to go to the clinic even though they are sick because the picture creeped them out, not to mention that the school clinic was located on the basement.
I recently saw a Modern Art exhibition with some portraits which was very disappointing to see how backwards modern art thinking has regressed. Our aesthetic consciousness has been distorted by the Art industry with poor "nothing to say" standards in so many areas .I Love Carriere's who captures the soul of his subjects like very few can. He is up there in the master class of painting

Maybe I'm the only one, but I don't see Carriere's works as part of Symbolism. Yes, he was technically a Symbolist, but his art seems to me much closer to Munch and some other expressionists
Do you know Fabrizio Spadini??? Is a fantastic Italian painter that mix the classic artists and the new pop culture, I recommend you to see his paintings!!!!
I have very mixed feelings about atelier-style art, because as high as the quality is, it tends to be noticeably unadventurous, conceptually speaking. But Carrière does indeed put these traditionalist skills to very good (and modern) use. And clearly he wasn't slavishly devoted to academic considerations.

To be fair I think it is a bit clickbaity/misleading he is definitely well known, as the Canvas said it was one he wasn’t aware of personally

It's like he painted in the dark only lit by a candle. the constant moving of the light would create an almost wispy image.
The best art iv seen in a Very long time. Look att the noses. Insted of shrpness as in all other art he uses the nose to be a part of the Dream.

More artists should recreate their dreams. It connects you to your subconscious and by doing so allows for more creativity
Start by keeping a dream journal and filling it with as much detail as possible
