A relevant section from the above-mentioned "Bill Frisell, Beautiful Dreamer" by Philip Watson: "...Frisell went to [Paul] Motian's apartment on Central Park West. 'I still remember when he opened the door, just the energy...that was heavy-duty. I'd never met Marc [Johnson]; I'd never met Paul. Bill Evans had died...they were talking about him. Then we started saying "Well, let's play something" and they said "My Man's Gone Now." So I'm playing this song I associate with Bill Evans with these two guys who played with him. It was heavy for me. I'm still trying to play that song.'" And to think that Paul Motian is gone, too. This one runs deep - layers of meaning and many resonances in Frisell's performing that tune. Thank you.
Its difficult to say if he is the best out there but at the same time I feel there ain't noone out there who creates what he does in music. Certainly I haven't heard anyone playing this song in such a creative way. Bill you are a rare genius
Wow, Bill! That’s such a great arrangement and your tone is fantastic. it sounds like you developed it mostly from the Gil Evans arrangement. One of my favorite pieces of music and now I’ve got another one. I’ve already watched this video several times, but I’ve only just begun. Masterful solo guitar. Thank you for all your beautiful music!
Listening to this beautiful version I can’t help but wonder how this tune influenced Mingus’ Goodbye Pork Pie Hat - there are definite similarities, almost a before and after emotional portrait.
Hat trick. Jazz is a wonderful American musical invention. Gershwin was an amazing American composer. Bill Frisell is one of America's finest guitar players.
Amazing performance Mr Frisell! Any viewer know what is this neck pickup? Bridge (unplayed) appears to be a firebird. Always neat to see unique pickup configs in a tele!
According to description: JW Black T-style guitar with Firebird-style pickup in the bridge, and a gold foil-covered P-90 in the neck! I didn't think to check there till I saw your comment 😆
Bill Frisell is a gift to humanity.
And he embodies all that the world loves about the true spirit of America

My guitar hero!
Bill shows up every few years and coaxes magic out of that Carr Sportsman. So many clips of him just slaying at Fretboard Journal through that amp.
Every note Bill plays sounds as if it’s newly discovered.
Nicely put and IMO exactly right, Rob. Thanks for writing what I couldn't quite come up with!

Cannot believe how great this is
i love how unique bill's style is, there is nobody quite like him. awesome song. also awesome shirt.
He looks like he escaped from prison, which is fitting because he was probably arrested by the fashion police.
When I need a break from life and clear my head, I listen to this man. He just takes me away with his beautiful music.
Just lovely, such purity and clarity of concept. wow ...
Mercurial as always….
So beautiful, a lot of ambience, mood and rythm with just one guitar, lovely 👍👍👍
Perfect timing! ❤
I become immediately entranced by Bill’s time, tone, and phrasing.

Thanks Bill! This reminds me of my old guitar teacher Ted Greene! Jazz on a telecaster!
My old friend Russel Laidman also studied w him. Did you know him?
@@WyattLite-n-inn yes, I went to his house out by peirce college! He had a cat!
@@WyattLite-n-inn I knew Ted but not Russel

@@filmclip4600 his cat wouldn't leave me alone!
This may be my favorite thing he has done.
