its so fascinating to see him play this tune in many formats and from all eras of his career. THis is vastly different then his more recent playing of the tune. thanks so much for sharing
Henry Cameron : I never had a special liking for Bill Frisell. Now, last month I sat down to read the text in Moreno's Cd "Third wish" as I recently feel an interest for a bit of atonal playing. He mentions Frisell on page 3, sixth line from the top. In all respect for famous names, I first laughed, as the guitar sound in the videos of mr. Frisell around TH-cam remind me of instrumental bands of the 60's ( reverb, chorus...). Listening this exact video, brought to mind Moreno's "Another way," tune #6 on Third wish ( call me crazy). Perhaps it is the chorus that Moreno uses so beautifully for jazz ( of course I don't compare technique here !). Anyhow, I was happy for your comment ; FYI, I also have Moreno's "3 For 3," which is also great.
Virtuoso! The way he alternates finger and picks as well as bass and treble lines so effortlessly. Bravo. Does he remind anyone else of Eric Johnson? They are both in the stratosphere for me, just curious if anyone else sees that... 🎸🎶😎
Claas Krause: jazz can be played on any kind of guitar. There are players who use strats, teles, and other types of non traditional instruments other than the iconic hollow or semi hollow archtop most commonly associated with jazz.
Yeah, and also that’s an SG Junior, which means he’s using the bridge pickup (there’s only a bridge pup in a SG Junior). Nowadays he uses the neck pup of whatever guitar he’s playing, but back then he was a bridge pup man, also with the Klein he used for a while after the SG period. I only know of two jazz guitarists that played with the bridge pickup: Allan Holdsworth and Bill Frisell.

@@DanRelayer_Ukraine yeah. Those versions are so non trivial, angular and beautiful. I was lucky to see that band live quite a few times. So inspiring... DESIRE-TABOO-SUBLIMATION- == Great Art. Sadly, from late 90s his music was changing to some different vibe. We all getting old... But in 89 -90, Bill was playing Sadovski guitar, SG was earlier instrument....
he's boiled away all the non-essential notes in the harmonies and distilled it down only the notes that make a difference. it's a skeletal representation of the original harmony. to a certain extent this works due to the unstructured (read rubato) rhythmic environment and the sustaining capability of the instrument. very nice! :)

You know you’ve achieved something when your name alone evokes a very certain approach to music.
The sound of Bill in those SG years was so evocative, bitter and sweet. Fantastic.
I love how he interprets a melody and takes it into a Frisell mood: always beautiful and strange, in the best sense.
One of my favorite videos on TH-cam
Pure artistry, there is no one like him....

the best of all, no excuses
I did see him in Toronto in the 80"s,A fine player for sure.
No one is better than Bill Frisell!
what a mad man
Gibson SG: Black Sabbath, AC/DC... and Bill Frisell.
lots of cool players used SG zappa, allan holdsworth, ollie halsall, frank marino

There was a famous TV Talk-show, here in Brazil, which the resident Jazz instrumental band's guitarrist (called Rubinho) used to play a SG.
He even did ads for Marshall amps back in the day…
Absolutely stunning!
Bill likes to take a beautiful walk around the melody. Awesome version!
Very personal approach to say the least ... beautiful !

I do not think Bill Frisell ever used a chorus, at least I cannot recall a recorded tune or a live concert where he used one.
The Naked City LP has this swelling style and I LOVE that ! This has the same vibe but mellow. Super cool !

Holly Crap!!! Amazing...
Thx for sharing this video. It s beautiful !
Excelente!!!
I wonder how much influence Bill had on Kurt Rosenwinkel. I hear several little things that remind me of Kurt.
Surréaliste!
so great... on a SG! gives me trust in that guitar for performing jazz music and the likes

@@ismaelbelda1John Scofield plays with the bridge pickup too, with the tone slightly down, gives a great sound
@@labdasounddesign Yes, you're very right. I love that Scofield tone!
@@labdasounddesign He uses the ProCo Rat tone control rolled all the way off, distortion control just cracked open. Fat tone from the bridge p/u.

is there more??? looks like Is That You/Before we were born era... so awesome

Bennyplays wow thanks very much for the info. 89-90 is my favorite time of Bill. Before we Were Born and Is That you?

At his best IMHO😊👍

What is this clip from? I'd like to see more from this.
Wow! J'ai l'impression qu'il joue sur un STICK (10 cordes) mais avec seulement 6 d'une guitare standard... et quel arrangement !!!
Does anyone know what pedals are being used by Bill here?
Thanks for this upload!
Where did you find the video?
It's an extract from a film or something else?
Instructional video on Rittor music
Is this available on CD or DVD?

It would be cool If he had done the bill Evans thing on that taking it to A flat for the second chorus
when was this recorded? I like his vision.
unique
Post space age cool jazz wonder
I didn't know David Lynch played jazz guitar...
I’ve had that comparison in mind since the early 90th!!!😮👍
