I like the aquaclear. As far as im concerned, it the only hob that water HAS to run through all the media you put in it. Almost all others are made with an escape route for water flow so as not to plug up the filter, making diy packing of filter almost useless.

I've used Aquaclear filters in the past and though its a decent little filter but its motor really needsto be switched to being submerged in the tank rather than i the basket of the H.O.B.

I tend to disagree. Fortunately, it is easy to sink a high GPH motor in the very bottom of the tank with a tube connecting to the filter intake for TRUE self-priming. In-tank pumps on HOB filters are a useless frivolity that does little to help the issues it claims to solve, and the only means of actually solving those problems are with a pump at the very bottom of the tank, as I had previously mentioned.

Don't use them, at least for now. My oscar is so messy that I might cut off the intake grates so that detritus has a less obstructed path into the filter.

Sea Chem tidal series of H.O.B. filters are superior in every way. Try one 😊

I have one. They're hot noisy garbage. Powerful, but still noisy, ugly garbage. I'll make a video about my gripes in the future, but long story short, they have limited uses, are far more difficult to modify than AC filters, the surface skimmer is redundant due to the high flow rate they claim to have, and if the water level gets even a little low from evaporation, you will know, which distracts from when you just want to enjoy your fish tank after a long day.

@@therandomman6647 You must have gotten a "lemon" ? Mine are quite reliable and quiet. Love the self prime pump and it's built more sturdy.

Maybe I do have a lemon, which shows poor quality control. I do love the self-cleaning impeller! They just don't suit my use, which is why I am upset to see them marketed as the "perfect all-around HOB filter" when they so clearly are not. Maybe a Tidal 110 would be cool for a large goldfish tank, but they don't handle cichlids worth a damn, and if I were to suggest an aquarium filter to a client or something, I would choose an aquaclear in a heartbeat over the Tidal for the aforementioned reasons. They have their place, but they don't outclass the simple elegance of the Aquaclear. The Tidal filters' awkwardly shaped and narrow media compartment is good for displaying and keeping the tank close to a wall, but makes it useless for wanting to fill it like a sump like what can be done for the Aquaclear, which the Tidal claims to have replicated. They have their place, but not in a real-life situation where even MILD neglect may occur. The sponge is small with minimal surface area, which detritus can clog very easily.
