I believe that Dyson has realized the complexity of actually mass producing BEV's. Concepts are easy to produce, mass producing them exceptionally difficult !
It's interesting hearing about what other countries are planning to do to get back the tax lost from petrol and diesel. Here in NZ the government already has a road user charge for diesel vehicles based on per km, and is extending that to EVs in 2021. I personally think it is a mistake to bring it in too early, but the EV community and government get a lot of flack from diesel drivers who are mainly truckies and tradespeople, saying that EVs are using the roads for free.
A Patron in Tchad, cool! I guess the road building and maintenance in the future will have to be covered by the VAT on cars, tires and the electricity used for charging. That should be enough.
Tax on tyres could be a reasonable proxy for energy usage without the need to monitor anything at all. Ie more tyre replacement implies more mileage which implies more energy usage
My first thought is that there is a MASSIVE difference between the cost of a tyre, and the amount of tax paid on fuel. So would a tyre have to cost , say £1000..?
Andy McCabe good point. My rough calculation works out at £650 per tyre. Not a problem ... just an opportunity for a new tyre leasing / rental business. Interestingly On a recent fully charged live show a guest stated that tyres should be leased to encourage tyre manufacturers to develop longer lasting tyres since they are currently incentivised to make them last for as short a time as they can get away with. Since tyre particulate pollution turns out to be more damaging to health than exhaust emission this is a big problem. So a tyre tax might also turn out to save lives as well

However mundane your life might be, there will be moments when what you're doing or what you like should be kept private. I believe giving away your right to privacy is like inviting corporations to come and exploit your persona, and given the direction that big data has been taking for a few years, this could lead to a complete lack of freedom and a very worrying distopian future for humankind. Or maybe not, and maybe you don't mind being bombarded with anti-hemorrhoids ads because you browsed the web hoping to help your poor old auntie who happens to suffer from them
yagolf Agree that data protection must be properly supervised. For me I’m willing to trade the risk of data misuse / hacking in return for benefits. However I’m generally trusting of technology and government intentions. If I lived in a totalitarian system or distrusted technology more I’m sure my attitude would be different

When governments start taxing road usage by distance. Does that mean all of the new vehicle s on the road will get accurate odometers? If not the driver will be paying more to use the roads than they actually do. For example. My current car, at 30 miles per hour indicated speed. My car is actually doing 28 miles per hour.
You're confusing odometer (measures total distance travelled) with speedometer (measures instantaneous speed). In UK, the speedo is allowed to read up to 10% faster than you're actually going, but it is an MOT fail if it reads slower. An odometer is usually pretty accurate.
I think any modern system for tracking road usage should be GPS based. I know this sounds spooky in an Orwellian sense, but it can be done in a way that doesn't allow the government to track your location. And it would be a lot better and fairer solution than what is used in most places today: taxing the fuel to pay for road maintenance. An optimal system for taxing road use should be based on these factors: Where you are driving: Congested city streets should be more expensive to drive on than empty roads in rural areas. The size and weight of your vehicle. Heavier vehicles cause more road wear and giant pickups and SUVs contribute more to congestion than sensible small city cars. Again, this would be tied to location. In rural areas where there's no congestion and trucks actually make sense it wouldn't make much of a difference if you drive a truck, but in a city it would make a huge difference. Then on top of that ICE cars need to pay a pollution tax that EVs are not subject to at all.

A backstreet industry would spring up to sell masking devices to avoid being charged for driving long distances. In fact, any metering system would inevitably be hacked. Meaning that some form of payment linked to the characteristics of the car itself will probably continue for some time.

I suspect Dyson have discovered that the cost of battery production effectively makes EV production pointless and until an alternative is actually found then they will not be for anyone unless they earn a substantial wage.
They do produce and buy one of the more acclaimed and successful EVs ie the Renault Zoe. I suspect that they just don’t like listening to English language podcasts

I think that the pessimistic speed reading is deliberate to avoid legal challenges but the odometer is accurate.

To tax mileage you don’t need to track the mileage at all, you can use a proxy. Eg a tax on tyres
