    I believe that Dyson has realized the complexity of actually mass producing BEV's. Concepts are easy to produce, mass producing them exceptionally difficult !

    It's interesting hearing about what other countries are planning to do to get back the tax lost from petrol and diesel. Here in NZ the government already has a road user charge for diesel vehicles based on per km, and is extending that to EVs in 2021. I personally think it is a mistake to bring it in too early, but the EV community and government get a lot of flack from diesel drivers who are mainly truckies and tradespeople, saying that EVs are using the roads for free.

      A Patron in Tchad, cool!
      I guess the road building and maintenance in the future will have to be covered by the VAT on cars, tires and the electricity used for charging. That should be enough.

    Tax on tyres could be a reasonable proxy for energy usage without the need to monitor anything at all. Ie more tyre replacement implies more mileage which implies more energy usage

    • @andymccabe6712
      @andymccabe6712 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My first thought is that there is a MASSIVE difference between the cost of a tyre, and the amount of tax paid on fuel. So would a tyre have to cost , say £1000..?

    • @andrewpaulhart
      @andrewpaulhart 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andy McCabe good point. My rough calculation works out at £650 per tyre. Not a problem ... just an opportunity for a new tyre leasing / rental business.
      Interestingly On a recent fully charged live show a guest stated that tyres should be leased to encourage tyre manufacturers to develop longer lasting tyres since they are currently incentivised to make them last for as short a time as they can get away with. Since tyre particulate pollution turns out to be more damaging to health than exhaust emission this is a big problem.
      So a tyre tax might also turn out to save lives as well

    Autonomo is a privacy nightmare. Sounds like a future where you get free cars if you let them track you 24/7. We'll need ad blockers for cars soon.

      @@andrewpaulhart I believe you might be missing the point, though this is just my personal take. However mundane your life might be, there will be moments when what you're doing or what you like should be kept private. I believe giving away your right to privacy is like inviting corporations to come and exploit your persona, and given the direction that big data has been taking for a few years, this could lead to a complete lack of freedom and a very worrying distopian future for humankind.
      Or maybe not, and maybe you don't mind being bombarded with anti-hemorrhoids ads because you browsed the web hoping to help your poor old auntie who happens to suffer from them

      yagolf Agree that data protection must be properly supervised. For me I’m willing to trade the risk of data misuse / hacking in return for benefits. However I’m generally trusting of technology and government intentions. If I lived in a totalitarian system or distrusted technology more I’m sure my attitude would be different

    18:14 - Oh yes they certainly can tax electricity, and they have done so for decades. VAT on electricity is a very low 5%, which can be increased. And there is nothing stopping more taxes from being added to public charging points and home charging connectors. Why else would home chargers be smart metered?
    Public chargers are taxed in multiple ways already, by both direct and indirect means: The aforementioned 5% VAT on the electricity, plus income taxes, business taxes etc, which are levied from the suppliers, as well as the ongoing taxes which are levied from the landowners, power distribution companies and equipment manufacturers.
    Apart from electricity taxes, there are some obvious additional taxes which are, or can be extracted from drivers. Some countries have 100% tax on car sales and imports, plus the other taxes, including VAT. Vehicle Excise duties can be increased. Luxury taxes are applied to cars. Insurance is taxed in various ways. To date, Britain only has one motorway toll road. Their number can be increased, as they have been in other countries.
    Governments have their financial arms so far down our throats that we often have no idea how much we are being taxed for goods and services. When you work it out, the total tax burden on a person's gross income is well over 50%, when all purchases and duties are considered: Income tax, NI contributions, 'Stamp' duties, VAT, land taxes, Poll Taxes, Sales taxes on various goods, import and export duties..... the list goes on.

    When governments start taxing road usage by distance. Does that mean all of the new vehicle s on the road will get accurate odometers? If not the driver will be paying more to use the roads than they actually do. For example. My current car, at 30 miles per hour indicated speed. My car is actually doing 28 miles per hour.

    • @Hitstirrer
      @Hitstirrer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that the pessimistic speed reading is deliberate to avoid legal challenges but the odometer is accurate.

    • @WonkoTheSaneUK
      @WonkoTheSaneUK 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're confusing odometer (measures total distance travelled) with speedometer (measures instantaneous speed). In UK, the speedo is allowed to read up to 10% faster than you're actually going, but it is an MOT fail if it reads slower. An odometer is usually pretty accurate.

    • @zlozlozlo

      I think any modern system for tracking road usage should be GPS based. I know this sounds spooky in an Orwellian sense, but it can be done in a way that doesn't allow the government to track your location. And it would be a lot better and fairer solution than what is used in most places today: taxing the fuel to pay for road maintenance.
      An optimal system for taxing road use should be based on these factors:
      Where you are driving: Congested city streets should be more expensive to drive on than empty roads in rural areas.
      The size and weight of your vehicle. Heavier vehicles cause more road wear and giant pickups and SUVs contribute more to congestion than sensible small city cars. Again, this would be tied to location. In rural areas where there's no congestion and trucks actually make sense it wouldn't make much of a difference if you drive a truck, but in a city it would make a huge difference.
      Then on top of that ICE cars need to pay a pollution tax that EVs are not subject to at all.

    • @Hitstirrer
      @Hitstirrer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zlozlozlo A GPS based road pricing system would require the car's unit to always be 'online' to the satellites to report movement. That would be very easy to mask and hide miles driven. A backstreet industry would spring up to sell masking devices to avoid being charged for driving long distances. Odometers can also be tampered with of course and many cars are still 'clocked' by unscrupulous car vendors. That would also rise if road pricing was introduced using an annual check reading. In fact, any metering system would inevitably be hacked. Meaning that some form of payment linked to the characteristics of the car itself will probably continue for some time.

      To tax mileage you don’t need to track the mileage at all, you can use a proxy. Eg a tax on tyres
