I didn't like Dyer Maker at first, but it grew on me.... The Rain Song is just majestic. Sometimes I hear it and it gets to the mellotron strings and I feel tears well up in my eyes...so beautiful...❤
I think the vocals sound the way they do on No Quarter because they slowed the whole song from D down to C# with the tape machine. Hence why they play it in D live
I remember I was around 19 (1985ish). I came home maybe around midnight and was most likely under the influence of "something". I remember lying in bed with my trusty transistor clock radio next to me listening to WNEW 102.7 in Queens when Dancing Days came on. It was my first time REALLY HEARING it. Now that I've been playing over 30 years I understand what I was hearing but hearing those slides (with a slide) was a religious moment in my life that I will never forget. 57 now.
My ranking would probably be 1. No Quarter 2. Rain Song 3. Over the Hills 4. The Song Remains the Same 5. Dancing days 6. The ocean 7. The Crunge 8. D'yer Mak'er Many of the ones in the middle are interchangeable for me, but No Quarter and Rain Song are definitely my favorites. When I was 12, my guitar teacher introduced me to this album, so I have a lot of memories of learning it with him. No Quarter was also his favorite and was one of the first ones he showed me. I also remember my mom initially did not like me listening to his album because the cover freaked her out.
This is a much better ranking. Rain Song is one of the greats. The Ocean is forgettable. And I never want to hear Dyer Maker again, cause I heard it a million times on rock radio.
No Quarter is my fave as well. So dark - almost like a painting, It moves you to another plane. I first heard the HOTH LP and then later saw the film TSRTS - wow - Page's improved solo was mind blowing.
This is one of my favorite Led Zeppelin albums. Couldn't agree more with the number one pick. It just feels so dreamy and surreal to listen to. You are absolutely spot on about the song taking you to places when you listen to it. My personal top 3 would be 1. No Quarter - obviously 2. The Rain song - Jimmy Page's sense of melody and harmony is unreal here. Simply a beautiful ballad. 3. The Ocean - Never a dull moment in this song. Time signature keeps you guessing, epic riffs and main solo and the key change in the end is icing on the cake.
Here’s how I would rank ‘em. Worst is -8, First is -1: 1. Over the Hills and Far Away 2. The Song Remains the Same 3. The Ocean 4. The Rain Song 5. Dancing Days 7. The Crunge 8. No Quarter
Listening to Houses of the Holy is what got me through the pandemic. I would listen to it everyday driving to. Yeah I still had to go to work. Love Led Zeppelin.
Your comment about the synth introduction in The Crunge sounding like something from a ‘70s television show is exactly the same reason why I have always disliked that part of the song; it always reminded me of the theme song from Sanford and Son. I love the first minute of The Crunge, but once that synth kicks in, it’s all downhill from there. Not to mention, Plant’s elongated vocals, toward the end, are one of the rare times where his singing actually annoys me.
My personal ranking 1. The Ocean 2. Over The Hills and Far Away 3. The Song Remain The Same 4. The Rain Song 5. Dancing Days 6. No Quarter 7. The Crunge 8. Dyer Maker
HOTH has grown on me a lot. When I heard it the first time 30 years ago I thought, that it is overproduced and sounds artificial in parts (There is a rumor, that Plant's voice was sped up to make it higher). I only liked three songs and very much preferred the live-versions. But meanwhile I love it because - as you say - I have realised how great some single parts are. The best example is the drum-groove of "The crunge" (You nail it by the way!). All in all I think they reacted on this album to common trends of that era: Progressive Rock, Funk and Reggae. I want to add to your analysis, that Jimmy Page copied some trademarks of Pete Townshend in "The song remains the same". My personal ranking would be like this: 1. The Rain Song 2. No Quarter 3. The Song Remains The Same 4. D'yer Mak'er 5. Over The Hills And Far Away 6. The Ocean 7. Dancing Days 8. The Crunge
Can't really argue with that order. The Crunge for me is just one of those jams you do as a band for a laugh and probably should have been swapped out for the actual title track. Jimmy's guitar work on this album is stunning. Acoustic, electric, so much variation, style, feel and tone. Pure musicianship.
Tool's cover of No Quarter is equally as haunting. Tool plays it in slow motion too. It's on the Salival album. The Ocean is probably one of the few songs I can still sort of play after all these years.
The first two songs on the album are the best opening duo of any album. The Song Remains The Same itself is one of the best to learn from, its lead breaks are awesome.
Like you stated, rating the songs on LZV is really hard. Such a great album that has always been a favourite of theirs because of both the songs and how they complement each other on the album.
The Crunge to me is the gem on HOTH. Odd meter and every musician locked in tight. Love the bass coming into the drum intro for a couple of bars before the guitar kicks in.
One of my memories of this album: I accidentally made the other guitar player in my band 15 years ago quit because I insisted we play the end bits of "The Ocean" correctly instead of the wrong way he'd been playing for years...😆
My favorite has got to be Over The Hills And Far Away. That faint church organ at the end of the song has to be the most optimistic sound ever put to music.
Yeah. Over the hills is my favourite as well. The ending is actually played on a Clavinet. I've always thought those wailing notes at the very end were slide guitar. But it is actually synth. And apparently jimmy's guitar echos are coming through but i think it is mostly buried in the mix.
#1 Over the Hills and Far Away Initially I got bothered when you dissed the synth in the Crunge because the fills in it sound pretty unique. But then you played the 80s TV theme part and i LOL'd. My early memory from this album is that the inside art when accompanied with No Quarter scared me as a child. Which is why perhaps im mostly bored with No Quarter; it ranks pretty low for me. However, when i heard and saw Page & Plant perform it live it really made me appreciate it more.
5:00 The joke is: - My wife's gone to the West Indies. - Jamaica? - No, she went of her own accord. Jamaica = Did ya make her? It's an oooooooooooooooooooooolllld music hall joke.
I remember this album was the first thing I listened to after I asked my first girlfriend out, so I totally associate The Song Remains the Same with those feelings of optimism and excitement you mentioned
I’ve been doing No Quarter into Machine Gun, since I was a teenager, because they share a similar riff, that can work in Em, or tuned a half step down. Still looking for someone who could do the vocals for both.
The Ocean was the song my drum teacher used to show me odd time signatures, back when I was a kid in the early 2000s. The Crunge is one of my favorites off the last few Zeppelin albums and I could definitely swap it for Dancing Days, that song always felt like filler to me! hahaha
mike i have a really cool new idea for a potential series. you take a song you know but havnt learnt before and try to remake it from memory. you can look up lyrics and tunings if you want, but youre not allowed to listen to the original song until youre finished remaking it from memory.
The Crunge is absolutely my least favorite song off this album. If they swapped it with Houses of the Holy off Physical Graffiti this album would be flawless. Oh yeah, my list. 8 The Crunge 7 The Song Remains the Same 6 The Rain Song 5 Over The Hills And Far Away 4 D'yer Mak'er 3 Dancing Days 2 No Quarter 1 The Ocean
@@brianbianchi8028 I'm not saying it's a bad song though because it isn't. I just think stylistically it's jarring going from OTHAFA to The Crunge then Dancing Days.

As I was watching your rankings I was thinking that you put some songs too low. Obviously your list is based on your tastes and that's cool and all. But when I put my list together I realized that this album is really hard to rank! Also, the album is just packed with awesome songs, so like you said, even the lowest rated songs are still great. I will state though that The Rain Song is my #1 and The Crunge is my #8. After that, my mood could drastically re-order this list. Here's what I've got right now: 1. The Rain Song 2. The 3 songs from this album featured on The Song Remains The Same live album just don't compare to those live versions. I would have to put Song Remains The Same, Rain Song, and No Quarter behind the others. Well except Dancing Days and Die'r Maker or whatever. I got burned out on those 2 tracks because they were always on the radio
I’ve read about that many times. Page took a faster version, thst they’d recorded during the session for IV, then they re-recorded it. He then applied the “vari-speed” on the tape console to slow the entire song, until it was a half step lower.
My least favorite Zep album with an actual title, but... 8. Dancing Days (never cared for this one) 7. D'yer Mak'er 6. The Ocean 5. The Rain Song is by far and away my favorite Zep songs. Had this CD when I was in junior high and burned it up lol
The Ocean, No Quarter, and Over the Hills and Far Away are my top three from Houses of the Holy. They’re such magnificent songs.
Love this album. My favorite Led Zeppelin song is The Song Remains the Same
The booklet by Cameron Crow that came with that box set was so good.

Just watched "Squaring the Circle" about Hipgnosis Design that did a lot of those iconic album covers. Great documentary on netflix.

Love the James Brown reference and clip
“Hit me” lol
They don't slow the tape, they speed it up when recording so it sounds slower and "darker" when played back at normal speed
The Crunge druming is sampled by De La Sol
“My wife’s gone on holiday to the Caribbean.”
“Jamaica.”
“No - she went of her own accord”
My favorite Led Zeppelin album. Its one of those "oops all bangers albums" imo.
Ragrding D'yer M'ker, Page has said that it was how he he heard Jamaican pronouncing Jamaica. That makes sense given it's a reggae song...
