Led Zeppelin formed in 1968 and went on to become one of the most influential, innovative, and successful groups in modern music, having sold more than 300 million albums worldwide. The band rose from the ashes of The Yardbirds, when Jimmy Page brought in John Bonham, John Paul Jones, and Robert Plant to tour as The New Yardbirds. In 1969, Led Zeppelin released its self-titled debut which was produced by Page, as were all the subsequent albums. It marked the beginning of a 12-year reign, during which the group was widely considered to be the biggest and most innovative rock band in the world.
I am 55 today. It seems that the time just flew by. The 1970s seem like yesterday.
Happy birthday! Rock on man
Happy belated birthday ❤
60 in a few months, 🇯🇲, when I first heard LZ back in the 80s I was struck
Born in 68 started listening to my dad's zeppelin collection at 8 late at night with his headphones. Instant fan for life, funny Dad didn't really like them; too commercial.
Happy Birthday... No lies detected ❌
One of the most beautiful songs of all time
It is. The live version though has a lot more emotion to it.
Agreed. My most favorite song
It really is ❤
Kashmere is better than this one.

Yep.
Indeed! Astounding music from such young people. Not just Zep, but so many.
Omg same here. Takes me back to being in high-school and just good memories. Miss the old days.
I can't listen to Zeppelin without shedding tears. Im almost 68 years old and am a guitar player. I learned playing guitar from Jimmy page and Jeff Beck.
Well those two aren't in a class by themselves...
But it sure doesn't take long to call roll!
And what about steve how
Two of the best if not the best ❤

Haunting and beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️
The Rain song is good medicine for your soul, Peace to you all!

Let’s all GET THE LED OUT
The stars aligned when these 4 met each other. There will never be another Zeppelin. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I've tried over the years to get everyone I know to love Led Zeppelin, but they never dig deep enough to hear masterpieces like this. It's not all Whole Lotta Love and Stairway to Heaven. These guys were so diverse. There's something for everyone to love.
So so beautifully said ❤❤❤❤
Prophecy in music. Battle of evermore. 70s music is full with end of days prophecy.
Um......Greta Van Fleet much? They're the new Zep, butt at least 10x better. I'm being totally sincere, you can tell that right?
Well said Alec. You truly have great taste in music. Rock on mate. Long love L Z and rock and roll! 💯🎸💪
Amen
We throw the word "masterpiece" around too freely these days, but "The Rain Song" is absolutely a masterpiece. Brilliant from first note to last (which can be said for this entire album, actually).
My favorite album of Led Zeppelin. My first love experience was when this song was released and it is so fitting of the experience.
INDEED!
yeah Houses of the Holy is my favorite album and where i feel they really peaked as a band. i love every Zeppelin albums (yes, even In Through the Out Door and Coda) but this one is definitely my favorite
Agreed. Perfect word.
Best sex I ever had was with a hi oint this song and a sexy man
It was Aug 1988. My Grandfather had passed, we were in the funeral line up to the cemetary. And i had Zep playin. This is what came on as i started the car. Oh my! How a song can ring the bells of the memorys one once cherished. Peace to all .
For sure. Songs - and certain aromas, like the smell of baking - always take me back in time. Back in 1987, I had to bring my beloved Weimaraner, Fritz, to the vet for the last time; at nearly 14, he was ready to cross the Rainbow Bridge. After leaving the vet, I started my car and the first song that came on was "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Even now, going on 38 years later, every time I hear that song I think of that day, saying my last goodbye to Fritz and barely able to see because of the tears in my eyes. (Actually, the lyrics of the song are very poignant anyway. It's my favorite Skynyrd song by far, even with the sad connotation.) Note that I'm not trying to compare having a dog put to sleep with the passing of your grandfather; I'm just talking about how memories can be triggered.
@adude394 You have one great story here man. I understand the differences with storys. However, it all in one way or another have our Heart strings yanked on a little tight. I had a falling out with a hot blonde jersey gal. Every time the Allman Brothers, Melissa came on, im stopped in my tracks. Music has a strange way of revealing timeline. Peace!

So powerful... suddenly I'm 15 again. Shivering on the beach and drinking booze from a paper cup. There was so much magic in the world back then.
Nothing sends you back in time like music.
Music number 1
When I listen to this, I am once again in my 1987 basement bedroom on the floor, listening to this on my new stereo. Wondering if I will ever win my ex-girlfriend back. 1987 was my big Led Zeppelin year. I am visiting again ... for lots of reasons. Wondering where the time went.
I know I'll be 88 years old one day, still sitting on my deck having coffee, crying for the absolute beauty and soul NOURISHING effect this song provides for me ❤❤❤❤

Rock on old person.

Well, I'm 62, sitting on my deck having,,,,,,,something ;-), crying for the absolute beauty of this song as well. It still makes my eyes well up, like it did the first time I heard it 45 years ago. Then it made my eyes well up again trying to figure out the tuning & chords on this song as a young guitarist. 3 channels on TV, no youtube, no internet, nothing! Seeing them live, and/or picking the needle up a thousand times on the record, trying to learn that ONE chord or lick. Simply amazing.. 🤟😎🤟

Anyone reading this comment knows the power of music and the majesty of this particular song. In February 2011, I came home just after my mother's funeral and decided to work out to shake myself out of the catatonic state I had been experiencing since her death. My iPod had well over 1000 songs on it, so I programmed it to play randomly as I hit the weights. What song played first? Led Zeppelin's 'The Rain Song.' I paused my exercising briefly to let this 'coincidence' sink in. Feeling as though mom was speaking to me from beyond the grave, I resumed my workout not even attempting to hide my tears. The next song to play was the Beatles' 'Here Comes the Sun.' I am not fabricating this story; it actually happened. She was telling me that into each life a little rain must fall but here comes the sun. As far as I know, my mom never heard either 'The Rain Song' or 'Here Comes the Sun' in her lifetime. She preferred Country music. She was using the best possible medium to tell her grieving son, who is passionate about music, that everything will be alright. One day, there will be no more rain, only the sun. RIP mom. I miss you dearly. Dan.
So sorry for your loss, man! That is an amazing story; two of the greatest songs in all of rock music that came up one after the other. I'm sure your mom was smiling down on you.
@@adude394 She sure was--and she still is. I still have that iPod, and it has never again played either song while in random play mode.

As a old Progressive Rocker, I love the layers of music in this song. An orchestra can add so much to a song and stretching it to over 7 minutes, an absolute must. This is my favorite Zeppelin tune.
No orchestra.
JPJ on a melotron.
Couldn't agree more, I'm 17 years old and love prog rock too.
One of the many reasons Led Zeppelin stood head and shoulders among their peers.....brilliance.
Couldn’t agree more- this is one of their very best, IMO

Head and shoulders among their peers, they are better than all other bands from the 60’s and 70’s. No one is as good as Led Zeppelin, no one.

The Beatles and Led Zeppelin got along very well. As a matter a fact, George Harrison said to John Bonham "The problem with you guys, is you never do ballads”. This got back to Jimmy Page, and inspired him to write
"The Rain Song". He used the same chord progression as the song "Something" in the intro to "The Rain Song" as a tribute
to George Harrison.

The Rain Song - Lyrics:
It is the springtime of my loving
The second season I am to know
You are the sunlight in my growing
So little warmth I've felt before
It isn't hard to feel me glowing
I watched the fire that grew so low, oh
It is the summer of my smiles
Flee from me, keepers of the gloom
Speak to me only with your eyes
It is to you, I give this tune
Ain't so hard to recognize, oh
These things are clear to all from time to time, ooh
Oh, oh
Oh
Talk, talk, talk, talk
Hey, I felt the coldness of my winter
I never thought it would ever go
I cursed the gloom that set upon us, 'pon us, 'pon us
But I know that I love you so
Oh, but I know
That I love you so
These are the seasons of emotion
And like the wind, they rise and fall
This is the wonder of devotion
I see the torch
We all must hold
This is the mystery of the quotient, quotient
Upon us all, upon us all, a little rain must fall
Just a little rain, oh, yeah
Oh, ooh, yeah-yeah-yeah
Thank you kindly for taking the time to write out the lyrics 🙏 greatly appreciate your efforts !!!

What a great poem this song is. 😎🎶
I wrote these lyrics from memory in English class in high school and turned them in for an assignment. Can't remember the grade I got but I didn't get busted out. Lol
Always wondered what old lady Crider thought about those lyrics. Lol
Ahh, to be young again.

A timeless masterpiece.
Jimmy's beautiful melancholy guitar at the end is simply stunning.
FACT! 🙏
Always loved that, thought it could've been an intro to another song
@user-qd3tw9bu1e Robert's voice and lyrics are just as beautiful, but sometimes it's nice to listen to Jimmy's guitar and production as a stand-alone instrumental; you can then truly appreciate his incredible musical talent.
When Zep released the remastered albums some years ago, Jimmy included an instrumental version of Going To California. Absolute heaven.

To this day I have no doubt, this is their best song and one of the best songs in history. An absolute work of love and beauty.

i was soooo fortunate to see them 3 times.....and be on the side of stage twice.
Reading so many of these comments brings me so much joy, I'm only 17 years old and most of my life I've been listening to bands like Led Zeppelin. I didn't have a phone growing up or really any internet unlike most kids in my generation and instead had my dads old Walkman cassette player he gave me, he had bands like Genesis, Rush, BeeGees, Steve Windwood/Eric Clapton, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Survivor, Depeche Mode, Van Halen, Eddie Money, the list goes on of the music I grew up on, and of course Led Zeppelin too. Listening to this song brings me back to when I was a kid, just a boy with not a care in the world, just happy as can be and didn't worry about life and being an adult, now I'm a month away from becoming an adult and honestly, I'm quite scared if I'm honest. I don't know what to do with my life and I get stressed easily, I wonder if life is even worth living anymore if I'm pretty honest, and wonder if I am loved, I don't really have any friends but I try spend most my time playing guitar and going to the gym, but this song follows me everywhere in my mind, just that feeling of wanting to be free. I hope one day when I'm old, either married or most likely alone in my small home sitting on the porch watching the sun set, or watching the rain fall in an early spring shower, or the stars come out on a warm summer evening, I hope I can listen to this song, and remember the good in my life, and why I made it that far. I could finally say to myself "You did it, Josh".
Thank you for sharing. May Jesus shelter you from the storms this present struggles with.

Let noone try to convince you otherwise. You'll experience it listening to this song, and very nearly EVERY OTHER song in these guys records. Fan for life. Thank you
agreed!
I agree honey, it’s the way the guitar is so soft and seems so much like our heart beat in life, up down to the side ❤
Awesome. The power of music will never cease to amaze me
One of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs. So many layers to this beautiful song. A true masterpiece.
