Classic Races - The Carrera Panamericana.
The Carrera Panamericana was a border-to-border sedan and sports car racing event on open roads in Mexico similar to the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio in Italy. Running for five consecutive years from 1950 to 1954, it was widely held by contemporaries to be the most dangerous race of any type in the world.
Due to safety concerns and the expense to the government, the race was cancelled after the 1955 Le Mans disaster.
    Enjoy this documentary.. Drive safe!!

My father was the flag man for all the races, Victor Alfredo Escudero Lujan. Thanks for the wonderful memories.

Do you have any stories or recollections he told of the race?
Was he the one who flagged them to start or was he flagging them on at the end of the stages?
Any information you can give will be appreciated. Or if you know others who have stories I can collect. This was a momentous event and an oral history of it should be preserved.
      Thankd.

Very nice video. 1953 was the year of Lancia lunching the attack to Ferrari and Mercedes in the Carrera Panamericana. They gained the entire podium of the race, but they lost the driver Bonetti who was first and close to win. Lancia was one the the most important manufacturer at that time, also in F1 they were competing with Ferrrari, Mercedes, Maserati. In 1955 the death of the champion Aberto Ascari stopped the Lancia F1 program. They decided to retire and to donate all D50 F1 cars to Ferrari, who actually won the following 1956 F1 Championship with the Lancia Ferrari D50 (Fangio). Lancia came back to motorsport end of 60s in the rallies, where the brand wrote the history for 30 years (11 world titles, still a record today in 2021). Today Lancia, probably the most iconic among the historical Italian car brands, with 115 years of history, produces only 1 model. The new Stellantis corporation have decided to relaunch in the next years the brand launching 3 new models within 2026.

Digging up these old film shots was quite a project. Barnyard Studios and Narrator did a fantastic job in bringing to life what actually went on back then in Mexico.

The white Ferrari with the tail fin was driven by Phil Hill with Richie Ginther as navigator/co-driver. The hot rod is Ak Miller. Carroll Shelby almost ended his racing career when the Austin Healey he was driving went over the side, fracturing his pelvis. Mickey Thompson competed, as did a young, unknown Bobby Unser.

The first race went from Juarez to the Guatamala border and was for sedan type vehicles. The last 200 miles was not yet finished with the surface ranging from gravel to dirt. They got wise to the fact their world media outlet was on the other end so subsequent races ran north from Tuxtla Guiterez to Juarez across from El Paso.

This is awesome! Great time in racing history. The fatalities were very unfortunate but the excitement of the race will live on. Thanks for sharing.

Superb docu by BSP Vintage. I fully enjoyed this film and only now do I understand the history of this Whatever Comes To You road race. Held down there in the surprisingly fun and at the same time explosively dangerous country of Mexico

Herschel McGriff, who was 18 when he won the 1950 race is alive & still driving occasional races. Carroll Shelby was badly injured in a sports car crash.

BSP - Can you tell me who the navigator for Ralph Kramer was?
Do you have a roster list of the 53 Americans who entered? Does that include their navigators? I'm trying to find my dad's car in 1950. I THINK he was a navigator but I'm uncertain.
