My wife and I have many dogs, but border collies are by far the smartest I've ever seen. Extremely intelligent and perceptive, too smart for us personally, lol. But as a fellow dog lover, I feel for you missing your dog, as they aren't pets but more like kids.

From their origin as sheep dogs they are not breeded for permanent activity but for short and focused moments of concentration and power and after that resting for a long time. I also had to teach my BC (he was 7months old when he came to me with a very said history behind) how to rest because if the owner doesn't tell them to pause they will always ask for a new job. So yeah, my BC can rest for hours if I tell him: "Not now."

Right, it's mostly about protecting squirrels and foxes from the dog, and he takes some outwitting. Cats are clever and will freeze and outstare a collie. It's so funny watching ours dare himself to approach a feisty cat. At the first sign of a hiss, he'll dash away with all 4 legs together, laughing to himself.

An old lady my friend knew wasnt able to look after him, so I took him home. When I asked his name, she said Its Chase...you understand why very soon. The first afternoon I threw a ball for him, and even after I was finished with the game he kept dropping the ball on my foot, to tell me to throw it again. I woke the first morning to a thump thump thump sound. I rolled over and opened my eyes, and he was at the side of my bed with the ball in his mouth and jumping straight up 4 feet in the air, with a "good morning" look on his face. He was relentless. One day I thought...Ok buddy, Im going to wear you out. I made a tennis ball launcher because my arm was getting sore from throwing the ball. It sent the ball WAY out into the field. He never wanted to stop. I finally stopped out of fear that maybe he was so loyal to please me by chasing that he might run until he dropped. It kind of freaked me out honestly. These dogs are incredible, and SO SMART, but not meant for city living in my opinion. A walk in the park is not enough to satisfy their need to GO. But in the right environment, they are an absolute joy to be around.

About the only thing that normally would was him following us along the scrub, swamp, stones and places that just needed to be swum while we kayaked. If he didn't want to or had had enough, he'd just wander home.

We've got two border collies, and five chickens. They think it is their duty to constantly herd the chickens. They don't harass the chickens, but always ahead of them, making sure they stay grouped up, and the chickens are not afraid of them and actually will run towards the dogs in the morning. They must feel some protection from the local red tail hawk that circles the shy.
Andrew Phillips I had a border collie I had to send to my parents house. They had chickens and she would herd them too. And the kittens. Never had any training for herding. Just came natural to her. I hope they don’t breed these qualities out of the dogs. I love them!

I have a Bcollie and a big backyard and when she gets super exited she instinctively runs super fast over and under her own designed route of trees, tables and brush to parkour her way around and it is so adorable to watch.

For this type of circuit and group size, border collies possibly having the best balance of speed and agility - they should maybe just have their own class. It's almost like putting another breed to compete with greyhounds on the coursing speedway.

Border collies are the sweetest dogs I know as someone who has had a border collie mix for 10 years they are smart intelligent very playful energetic in general they are cute and sweet

What you do here, is go live near a huge field, or open space. Buy yourself a tennis ball cannon and have your border collie play fetch.

We had one at horse farm. She knew the names of 30 horses and would run out to reprimand any horse getting out of line.
