      Without a doubt, saddest scene. Probably because it's the first time Betty feels allowed to be completely authentic and it turns out that her values go beyond the superficial, far beyond. I've always seen that so it felt bittersweet to see that finally relayed to the fans who hated for so long that she actually was never a bad person.

      +M22 That's one way to put it, but by the same token, death has a way of getting people to focus. She still was a horrible mother in many ways. After all, she never would have fallen for Don if she too wasn't deeply damaged.

    • @PjD0150
      @PjD0150 7 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      RetroGuy76 I think it's a hard decision as Betty's reasoning was that she watched her mother die and couldn't deal with it and didn't want her children to go through that. I known that to also happen in life - the parent dying or surviving wants to protect their children from that and doesn't give that opportunity. However, as you said not knowing leaves them without being able to prepare and say goodbye. Some people need that closure for themselves. You stuck between a rock and a hard place here. I don't think you can ever get it right. The sad thing was her children who were of age knew anyway. So regardless she didn't get want she thought she wanted. Bobby broke my heart there.

    Love the sudden yet subtle transition of the tone in this scene. Don first speaks to Betty as an ex-husband who is upset that vital information is being kept from him and is concerned for the well being of his kids. However, he then realizes that Betty is right. He drops his guard and suddenly the young man who had fallen in love with Betty emerges and tearfully tells her "Birdie."

    I adore what this scene says about the complexity of human relationships. Despite all their ups and downs, "birdy", "I know". A comment on the nature of human connection. After such richly colorful history, there remains a deep level of care. A care so deep and ingrained, almost nothing undermines it. While two people may fall 'out of love', there is still love for one another. Humans care. And even the biggest surface-assholes are still human.

    Within the story, the entire Coke ad Don comes up with in the end was an ode to Betty if you watched the whole show. Betty was the Coke girl in the first season. The commercial was shot in Rome, which was her favorite place when she was a model, and the last special time they had together before their marriage fell apart for good. By the time Don went back and all of it was put together, Betty would have most likely have passed away. It was like Don saying 'I love you' in the best way he was capable.

      @@Ferchovicente I think Don could love, and did in many ways. We never saw their early relationship, but I'm sure he loved Betty when they met based on how they both talked about it. He loved Meagan as much as he could -- and the way he tried to be different in that relationship than he was with Betty showed it. He loved Anna like a mother, and he did love his kids, even though he was a poor father. His problem was that he was too damaged to be able to express love properly, and because of it pushed those he loved away. he could feel love, but didn't know how to "be" in love. not that it excuses any of his behavior... something something, men will literally found multiple advertising agencies rather than go to therapy. but that's my 2 cents.

      @@Ferchovicente Don had never been shown love bc he was raised by abusive dysfunctional ppl who saw him as a burden. The entire 7 season series is literally his search for genuine connection and love (something he’s knows how to mimic but not something he’s ever known on a real level). It’s all he’s ever wanted. That small smile at the end…. He’s learned that the only road to intimacy is total honestly and vulnerability. Don does learn to love in the end… that’s the entire point of the show.

      @@jesbair-hill Nope, Don was a disaster as a human being, the smile at the end of the season is because now he knows he can't love anyone but he's at peace, he was born to love in different ways and he can't love just one, he just wanted inner peace because the demons of the past. "Birdie..." That one word had more history & love than anything he had with anyone else. He never did right by her & neither did this show. The best scenes have always been the emotional ones between/about Don & Betty. The carousal speech, the letter where he asks for her forgiveness, when he breaks down & tells her about his past and now this.

What's wrong with you? She even tried to put her anger aside to comfort him when he cries in what was probably one of the worst moments of her life. She had the power to ruin his life & be justified in doing so after what he put her through but instead she keeps his secret and actually lies to the FBI to protect him. A man who had done nothing but lie to her & betray & humiliate her, time after time.
      But she was the one who was horrid to him?

      Lana banana People give Don every pass in the world, no matter what he says & does but cannot muster any empathy for Betty, a product of her time & upbringing. It's quite telling. But there are more & more people who are realizing that Betty was a great character

    • @thebooky161
      @thebooky161 7 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      ***** LOL "adultery aside". Because that's such a small thing. And you cannot compare her sleeping with that guy after years of him cheating on her. They were separated, Don was off fucking everything that moved & Betty did that so she could force herself to believe the scales were even & then go back to him. She didn't even sleep with Henry, she- unlike Don- stopped herself. She told Don to his face she wanted a divorce & left him.
      She DID comfort him, go back & watch the episode you have so much to say about. She owed him absolutely nothing yet she showed him compassion after a decade of his lies & manipulation. She tried to live with it but he snapped the last bit of trust she had in him. What was she supposed to do, stay with him even when she no longer loved or trusted him? And like I said, she had a chance to get even when the FBI came knocking & once again, she protected his secret- at risk to herself, her husband's reputation & her new marriage- when she didn't have to.
      And what did he give her that she wanted? Because what she wanted was a husband that was faithful & gave a shit about his family. But she was supposed to accept everything because they had a house and money? (Which he hid from her.) Betty was not Megan, she wasn't some struggling secretary when she met Don. She was a financially independent educated model who had a degree (far more than Don had) & could quite literally have any man she wanted. And now she was stuck with a man who refused to let her be anything but a wife & mother. She didn't owe him shit in terms of gratitude for what he'd "given" her.

    2:09 - "Birdie."

    There's so many ways to interpret this scene. That long silence is almost as if they are reconciling over everything they've gone through.
    Realizing that in the end they loved each other and should have been together all this. Or perhaps Don is finally apologizing for all the wrong and pain he's caused her and she's forgiving him at the end.

      Definitely agree on reconciling over everything. But I don’t think it’s either A or B i.e. they’re not thinking they should have been together; nor is Don apologizing and Betty’s forgiving him.
      Rather it’s reflecting on their shared history and life together (the ups and downs, the kids, etc). They’re making peace with each other knowing her time is limited; and expressing their love and care (without saying it).
      Beautiful scene.

      I don't think he's apologizing and I don't think they're thinking they should have stayed together. Rather its just an acknowledgment that despite the failings of both of them, Don especially, at the end of the day there was love between them. Maybe there is some forgiveness there, but I think it's more that Betty doesn't have to forgive him to look through the bullshit and acknowledge her love for Don one last time.

The fact that Don cant even physically say goodbye to her is shown in his restrained "Birdie....". Beautiful, heart-wrenching scene. I couldn’t help but think of the slide show of family pictures Don showed to Kodak when pitching the ad for Carousel way back in season 1. The snapshots documenting Betty and Don’s courtship, their wedding, the birth of their kids, raising a family, a New Year’s kiss. Now here these two people who built a life together sharing what they both know is their last contact ever on a collect call from miles away, Betty begging Don to allow her to live out her final days in a manner that she’s grown accustomed to - without him.
    So much of this show is about connection, connecting a brand or a product to consumers. The struggle to connect with others or even who we really are. This show is an absolute masterpiece. Evocative, entertaining and moving.

  • @MothsInALampshade

    Soooo absolutely gut-wrenching scene, we can all agree. BUT did you know that this mirrors the 2nd episode of season 5 where Betty has a cancer scare when her doctor finds a lump on her thyroid. When she can't find Henry, she immediately calls Don. He calls her "Birdie" on the phone call, after which she says "Say what you always say." Don says, "Everything's gonna be okay." And now, in this very last episode, Don is not only conveying his deep love for Betty, but is unable to say his mantra -- what he always hopes is true -- because he is realizing that thing's aren't under his control. But Betty is finishing his sentiment saying, "I know," because by knowing she's dying, she has at least some control as to what happens before she dies. It is such a small detail, but so deeply ingrained in these characters' stories, and that's why this show is so unbelievably good..

She desperately tried to do right by her kids, unfortunately it was based on values she didn't even question. That's how we all are in a way and if nothing, that deserves compassion for the character.

    Omg this scene is brutal and has such deep emotional resonance...When Don says "Birdie" it is literally peering into his soul and the regret and pain for what could have been with he and Betty. I always felt that Don and Betty's interactions after season 3 and their divorce always had this longing for each other and what they had. The relationships with Megan and Henry always seemed artificial in comparison.

    Say what u will about Betty’s character but “Bets” was always a “lady” even at her worst moments. From always answering the phone the proper old school way “Draper residence” ....to her etiquette and home making skills. Don was gonna be hard pressed to find a partner like her despite her personal shortcomings. He had flings and such but Betty also held Don down in many ways thru out the series that no woman was going to do like her. She actually had a lot of pride and respectable qualities that women now could admire. Don is arguing because he really can’t imagine his life or his children’s lives without her strong presence, he knows he’s not gonna be strong enough to hold them together.

    I really hated this scene, not because it's emotional, but because it sends a brutal stab through the heart in a twisted way depending on how you take it. Betty did not deserve to go out like that. I constantly watch the series here and there when I have free time, and as I watch I think of the bullshit that Don put her through, which she reluctantly endured. As much as I love the character of Don Draper, I feel he should have been the one who was diagnosed with cancer. At the end of the day, he is someone who wants to be put out of his misery...

When I was 19-20, my man-crush Brad Pitt influenced me to smoke because I thought he was the coolest guy and he was in my favorite movie of all time, Fight Club with a cig in his mouth in every other scene. Its not preposterous to say that a show like MadMen would bring back smoking, they made it look too cool.

      monokhem may I ask why?

      @miseendriste6337 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @monokhem She's flawed but don't forget she's the one who had to put through the most shit. She wasn't meant to be a mother but she was forced by the societal norms to be a house cat. Don was an absent father and a cheating husband who always put her down and shot her self esteem and gaslighted her and breached her privacy by secretly talking to her therapist. She STRUGGLED and fought to break free from that abusive marriage and she deserves commendation for that. Granted she was a bitch to Sally but those incidents were isolated moments of frustration. Remember that when Sally got her first periods, Betty is the first one she runs to. That's because at the end of the day, despite her flaws, she's a good mother.
      People hate on her and make quick judgements based on her flaws while forgetting that she represents ALL of us. She represents the futility of our lives, our frustrations, our incapacity to break free but also our little victories of ultimately breaking free. Betty is the character that is most easy to empathized with in the whole show.

    Betty understood Don/Dick better than most of the woman in his life, it's funny that the blondes in Don's life do understand him better: Anna and Betty, the brunettes: Rachel, The Beatnik, The Waitress and Megan were him trying to fill a mother void since his stepmother was a brunette and he always wanted some approval from her but never got it, the one thing I will always love about Betty is that even when she finds out about Dick Whitman and who Don really is and even when she's most angry at him she never ever uses his past against him, she's married to a senator and if Don's past would have come out then Betty's marriage to Henry would've been at risk, but she kept his secret to her grave, she could have ben the bitter ex wife but no she rises above that, yet people berate Betty for being too perfect, she was a product of her time, she was still a decent human being

      It would have been 100 times greater if Don had later visited her unannounced, and told her how proud he was that she was the mother of his kids.....done properly, the scene would have been talked about for decades.

    “Don, Honey” “Birdie…” omg this DESTROYED ME. Sobbing actual tears. Don and Betty always seemed (despite everything) to be passionately longing for one another on some level or another. The relationship got too toxic and dysfunctional after all the trust was broken…. But the anger and resentment couldn’t totally erase the passion and longing that never fully went away. That desire and tension remained in every interaction and was so frustrating to watch bc not only could the characters not totally move on… but the fans couldn’t totally move on either. The marriage with Megan just seemed like a total rebound relationship and never felt authentic. I can’t remember which episode it was but at some point in season 2 Betty says to a friend “sometimes I think if I don’t have Don to hold onto and keep me rooted to the ground… I’ll just float away”. I never forgot that. Much later in one of the final seasons Betty calls Don after a health scare (before she calls her husband Henry) and asks “Don, please say the thing you always say when things are bad” and he says “Birdie, everything is going to be OK”. He really was an anchor for her and continued to be for the rest of her life… just like she said in season 2. 😭😭😭

    I think that phone call was suppose to mirror the scene of Betty confronting Don about the Bobbie affair in S2E8.
    Betty: “You never say you love me.” Don: “Yes, I do. You know I do.”
    Don: “Birdie...” Betty: “I know.
