Love your videos Kevin. This was a dream for me for many years until my wife left me. I sold the boat and plunged in the music world. But you are rebuilding my deep love for the oceans. The trouble is that it will probably stay just a dream, as I am in my late seventies. however the future is always full of surprises.

Power boater for 40 years and now a new sail boat owner, I have a new found appreciation for all of those sailboat captains. With twin screws Bow and stern thrusters, I could dock my power boat almost anywhere and in most weather conditions with ease. Now I find myself paying close attention to the wind and currents and I still occasionally bounce off a dock or two. Kevin I admire your ability to navigate your boat without an engine.

Another wonderful episode, thank you. And I really appreciated your essay. I have a 23yo son, one of many I know who is “failing to launch”, spending his days gaming or watching TH-cam, choosing not to find gainful employment. I don’t know how to help him. I’m at the other end of life and planning to sail away towards the end of this year. I have filled my life with adventures and travel, including my son over the past 23years but still he chooses the gaming. You, sir, are working by filming/editing/uploading videos, marketing t-shirts, etc. Please keep making the videos and posting them, they are inspiring. Elaine ⛵️⚓️

And I hope I've made it clear that I don't entirely blame boys for "failing to launch". There is so much negative messaging about boys and men in our culture--from sitcoms where dad is a complete idiot, to #meToo where men are all potential rapists, to the media glorifying single moms when the research clearly shows that fatherless homes are terrible for kids (on average), especially boys. Then there's institutions like family courts where men often get taken to the cleaners. So what motivation does a boy have to grow up and marry in a culture like this? Sure, boys also have to pick themselves up by the bootstraps, but I think society has to stop bashing them 24/7 as well.

@@howtosailoceans1423 Going sailing and not letting themselves be constantly bashed is a good alternative though, and "failing to launch" into a society too dumb to recognize their qualities actually is a good thing. How could anything start to change should they _not_ turn their backs to the current system, which is rigged right against them?

Seeing that fishing pot slide by just inches away from the hull made me chuckle Kevin. Despite my best 'lookout' efforts, I have lost count of the number of times that has happened to me. I always feel, momentarily, like I have failed some kind of exam when that happens. It's reassuring to see that it also happens to much more experienced sailors. :-)

Well blow me down... I live on SSI disability, it's not much, but it keeps food in my and my dogs bellies, plus taking care of my good friend and 1st mate Kim, a few bucks to make more small improvements on my boat... I think once I learn more about how this boat works, and get my engine running again, I'll be able to single hand sail her... that is my goal, to survive, day to day, and one day get back to Seattle to see my dad, and my son and his family... I find it amazing the things one thinks of when all alone but for a dog... and what does my dog offer me you might ask, unconditional love, it doesn't matter what kind of day I've had, he's always happy to see me... and to give him his bowl of food while I eat mine... he's my best friend... not sure if I'll ever find the right guy, but he must love sailing as much as I do, or it will never last... and I will board my boat and sail away... from the norms of our weird society... I really prefer the boat life, I only lack that man who shares my passion for life... another great video Kevin, you inspire me to keep pushing my limits... never give up, never surrender!!

Yeow! A dragging anchor is one of the worst wake up calls a sailor can have. Especially on an engine less boat but, you handled it well and glad you turned the camera on and described the action. I doff my cap. As for the Philosophers Sandbar: Many ways to go through life. I worked a midnight shift for 19 years. Not much of a life then: work, sleep, eat. Making up for it now. Boat is currently on the hard for the winter. My current retirement plan is to get someplace warm once a month until spring outfitting starts. Jumping on another cruise ship out of New York in a week just to get some sea staring time in. Practicing my Beaufort scale observations during the day. I find myself on the balcony at night thinking about those mariners who plied the waters when they were on simpler vessels in simpler times.

Men, yes, but my wife and her willing acceptance - or maybe encouragement - of chaos often pushes me farther than I might have explored on my own in our limited sailing adventures. That said, what I really want is a better look at how that tiller is rigged for self steering. How about a how-to on that? Thanks for sharing and keep it up. My wife and I are hoping once we get our youngest settled into young adulthood we can venture back out on saltwater again.

Kevin you have the wealth of time. As you live you dont need to spend your life in between walls from nine to five. Far richer than the miserables capitalists that dont realize the true values in life. Thank you for your excelent channel. You have managed to make an interesting story. I sincerelly admire your quest. Felicidades

You have to try a Mantus anchor! check on TH-cam for people doing tests. Amazing at re-setting. They just keep digging down!

When or if the corporate world calls you and you decide to play, it might be interesting to apply your chaos theory and ‘engineless sailing’ experience to that world. You could see it from a whole new angle. I think there a more hidden dangers in that world than water world. Once again, K, outstanding work.

So eloquently put Kevin, and you showed us all a window into your thinking. I agree our western societies reward those that follow certain paths financially. Those safe paths don't neccessariy satisfy or nourish us at any primal level as you elude to. What you are doing is truly inspirational and clearly requires great depth of character which you constantly show in your videos. I am sure there are many more special women out there than Peterson might suggest, women that recognise a man for being authentic to himself, even if not displaying status in a more obvious or overt way. Be interesting to see how your journey to Europe unfolds & whether it adds anything to this line of thought...i.e. about how women may react to a man following his own path of danger and exploration at the edge of chaos. Safe travels and thank you for making your content.

Dude, your channel is one of if not THE most useful sailing or even travel channel on YT! Keep it up and you'll no doubt earn 10x the subs. Find a woman to "admire you for it", and come aboard and you'll have 50x, keeping up with the fashion thing you know. But you are living a fantastic life, you are getting pretty good at sharing it, and it is most definitely appreciated.

Just finished a No Engine Day (NED) in the Puget sound solo on my Fuji 40. Sailed off anchor in Eagle harbor and onto anchor in Kingston. I'm hoping to have another NED tomorrow to Port Townsend. I only had 5 NEDs in 2019 but those were certainly inspired by you. I appreciate the work you do in the filming and the knowledge you share. They've made me a better sailor.

@@howtosailoceans1423 I'm not sure it's a thing yet, but I'm certainly looking to make it one. That and NEs which are no engine maneuvers. Sailing on and off anchor, off mooring balls, sailing into harbors and marinas, and on and off docks. And SMBs which is sailing onto a mooring ball. Plus my personal favorite SSMBs - solo sailing onto mooring balls, of which I have 3 so far. The other morning I tried to sail off anchor with 20 knots of wind on the nose. I ended up having to use the engine but I was thinking Kevin could totally do this. I was also wondering if the gaff rig gave you an advantage in these types of maneuvers?
