- Across the Channel the French are also having a snap general election and it's already descended into chaos.

The main centre right leader locked himself inside the party's headquarters, while his rivals tried to expel him - eventually showing up with a spare set of keys.
Four left wing parties have formed an electoral alliance while desperately trying to mend their differences over foreign policy.
While one far right leader has accused the other of "setting the world record for betrayal".

You'd be a fool to think Macron decided to call an election 3 years before he had to do so out of some poorly thought decision. If he gives the factionalised right wing of French politics a chance at the premiership its in hope they'll miff their way through a term (fairly similar to that of the Tories since 2019 haha).

British politics from 2017 - 19, the Brexit years, where on another level.
The french people have an actual meaningful choice with real effect on implemented policy. In the UK, you can vote for 2 parties which don't differ in many policy areas.
You can't barrage the Farrage.

Rassemblement National was quite literally founded by nazis... They are linked to various crimes including one of their security service militant ilegally selling weapons that have been used in islamic terrorist attacks and several of their members planning terrorist attacks themselves... They are more of a mafia than a party and their ideas are definitively far right.

Ok so very not short story:
Before we had NUPES (idk how to say it in english) that united all the left for the legislative election 2 years ago but it broke up a year later, the party LFI was extremely dominant over this union as the traditional left and other parties had very bad results
let's cut back to this year european election:
-the traditional left had a better score than LFI
-the far right did their best score yet in a election
-the presidential party came in 3rd
the reason why the presidential party did pretty bad was because of macron unpopular reforms and many used the opportunity of the european election to show off their disapproval by voting the far right
what wasnt predicted however is macron taking a snap election that was completely unprepared and scheduled in less than a month.
Its chaotic now because the left will not take back the form of the NUPES as LFI was clearly less dominant than before, and so they scrambled to form a new union, this time with more negotation with the traditional left and so we got a new union called the New Popular Front (referencing the Popular Front in france in the 30's) and they decided to choose a single candidate for every departments
now heres the chaotic part
some left members refused the New Popular Front single candidate policy and instead ran as a separate candidate for the left
the traditional right became fractured following the decision of its president to ally themself with the far right, however the other execs of the party refused this decision and decided to do a hostile takeover of the party and kick out the president. However that decision was illegal because the party president have to call the vote to get him removed, so now you have 2 people claiming to be the party president and propose policies themselves and propose their own separate candidates
its chaotic because that snap election was not prepared for and so the parties had 2 or 3 weeks to organise themselves and theres a high potential that we end up with a opposition PM

That's not common sense, that's objectively being a danger for France and French people.
The two founders of the FN / RN (it's the same thing, they just changed the name in 2014) are Jean-Marie Le Pen, who is a multi-convicted antisemite and Holocaust denier, and Pierre Bousquet, who was actually a former Waffen-SS member.
And with Pierre Bousquet, there was a whole bunch of collaborators and former SS members, like Victor Barthélémy, a collaborator who participated in the creation of the Legion of French Volunteers Against Bolshevism, whose members would join the Waffen SS and swear allegiance to Hitler.
Like François Brigneau, a collaborator who would become part of the militia.
Like André Dufraisse, aka "Uncle Panzer," also a former Waffen SS member.
Like Léon Gaultier, Roland Gaucher, and many others, all collaborators, antisemites, or former SS volunteers... And after the creation of the party, they still had a history of racist and antisemitic incidents around them.
You can't get more far-right in France than the origins of this party, and since then, although Marine Le Pen and the RN have changed their communication in a project of "de-demonization," they have never addressed this past to apologize or put it behind them.
Bardella (the current president of the party) still denies that Jean-Marie Le Pen was antisemitic and Marine Le Pen still included antisemitic elements in her founding speech of the RN (during the name change) in 2014, and before its dissolution, they had, among their deputies, a former Holocaust-denying bookseller from Toulon.
And we can also note a whole bunch of fascists, former members of the GUD in Marine Le Pen's entourage, some of whom have been filmed making Nazi salutes, etc.
They're far right mainly because their party was created by former nazis and sympathizers

Are there two National Rally parties in France? C4N keeps talking about a “far-right” National Rally. I know about the one led by La Pen, but who leads the far-right one?
Calling a party "far-right" is somehow subjective, but there are some other parties on the very right of the political spectrum. The RN led by Marine le Pen is the main one with ~30% of the voters for the last EU election, and next you have "Reconquête" led by Eric Zemmour, defending a more radical policy and representing ~5,5% of the voters, born two years ago and that seems today almost on the verge of collapse
There is two, one led by marine called "RN Rassemblement nationale" and the other even farthest right is "Reconquête" led by Zemmour. They both are officially recognise as far right parties by the "Conseil d'Etat".

Far fight parties in france normally do well in European parliament elections. Macron only did this to test the far right's resolve on a domestic platform.
