Hello from France ! All teams faced a sever defeat one day or another. Even New Zealand and South Africa. But England team is not dead ! Look at France team juste after 2011 world cup : a 10 years awful nightmare for French fans. England team is still a major team... soon English players will retrieve their high-level game. Oh by the way... how many times France won world cup ? Less than England ! Go on friends, support your players, they are worth being supported. Great point about the gameplan. Logically, you have to think that that was Borthwick's plan along with the fact Farrell is having a terrible Six Nations from the tee. It was worth a shot to mix things up and experiment in the circumstances going into the game but the execution was poor. Meanwhile for France, everything seemed to go right for them and it was just one of their perfect days where the game comes to you and you calmly make the right play at the right time. Got to give full credit to them for an excellent performance.

England won’t get better until there’s more humility and less arrogance in English Rugby. England were dire with the exception of 2 players. At no stage did they look like being competitive - let alone winning. Our 2- maybe 3 best coaches are working in and with Ireland and France. English a rugby needs a clear out at the top. Borthwick needs to create a harder, fitter, faster and more skilful team and needs some vision and clarity about who he wants England to be. When they won the World Cup their identity was clear… now I don’t think they know who they are or what they’re trying to do. In the past they’ve had 4/5 individuals who could turn a game and who were world class. Now we don’t. Jones was kept in his role for 2 long - whether Borthwick - who was forwards coach under Jones - has got the vision and ability to lead and learn is up for debate. He coached the forward pack and they were destroyed by France everywhere - the Irish and French seem to understand that every player is a potential forward and a potential back - Irelands 2 wingers are a turn over threat when they enter a ruck- the French and Irish forwards can all run, hit a gap and pass accutately under the highest pressure…England simply can’t .. and if they thought they were the fittest team….

Beware guys, it’s the exact same that happened to France after its 2011 RWC final vs the ABs. And it took us nearly a decade to come back. Focus on your youth development, that’s what helped us. And don’t be afraid to steal coaches from other nations as we did with Shaun Edwards, there’s no shame with that.

  • @fraserposford144

Biggest problem for England in this game and the whole tournament has been the breakdown, specifically in attack. England are really struggling to protect their own ball beyond a few phases and this was exploited massively by France. Cros, Ollivon, Aldritt and Danty were phenomenal for France in disrupting England ball. It doesn't matter who you play at fly half at the moment, they've got such poor quality ball to work with.

  • @nzrockdj

As a Kiwi I am going to be brutally honest.
    1) Years of Eddie Jones as coach has done England no favors.
    2) Poison chalice for any coach taking on England after EJ.
    3) Your forwards are soft, much the same as your backs.
    4) Your player skill levels are not good enough, there are school boy teams here in NZ that are much better.
    5) French flair is alive and well something that England sadly lack.
    6) Non existent game plan.
    7) I have to question the heart of some of your players.
    8) I have doubts that England has the talent to be competitive.
The All Blacks have been through a challenging time in the last couple of years .. perhaps this is England rugby's
challenging times and some hard decisions will need to be made. The top four teams are France, Ireland
South Africa and New Zealand .. sorry to say England are well down the pecking order.

As a neutral, France were amazing and it was a great game to watch. The only disappointment was France kicking the ball out at full time when they could of scored another try. England need to go and play against Romania, Tonga and Latvia. If I was the English coach I would drop the whole team and only keep Genge, Itoje, Steward and Marcus Smith - yes Smith - but he needs a decent forward pack and number 9 and 12. The only time England pack and half back was quick you scored. You guys have looked slow and unfit all 6 nations. Honestly I like Marcus Smith as he has real talent but he can’t defeat France on his own

France has always liked a messy game and know how to take advantage of an unorganized line. The reason why Ireland won was because they kept their line and didn't let France take advantage of it. The only time this did happen, the French struck with a try from their 22. England were trying to play an open quick game, which has never been their style, and got hammered. England is used to a methodological game, boring, yes, but brings them results.

  • @retlwiz

Actually the other times England have tried to play fast like that have been the three last games against SA. I agree it’s not really natural for England to do it. Not sure if they were doing that 100% here, though. I thought Portfliet took odd decisions and kicked poorly - he seems to have gone off the boil rapidly since Australia. Dombrandt was just not strong enough in attack and weak in defence. Smith made errors at crucial moments by pushing it - his kicking out of hand is just not consistent enough at this level. That up and under off a penalty that he hit too long reminded me of that overlong kick against SA which led to a try. I agree the scrum and line out were solid. It was in the loose that we were monstered by France. Given that Ludlum and Willis are as good as we have got in that area, it’s a bit worrying.

A well coached team in France exposed Stewards horrible lack of pace. Not solely blaming him for the defeat. But on at least three occasions (first and last two French tries) he looked embarrassingly slow getting across. Teams know not to kick to him and they have started stretching him. Slade also looked a passenger.
JVP completely devoid of confidence and if Ben Youngs had of delivered that performance, we’d be screaming for him to go.
Jamie George, complete passenger who plays the full 80. Dombrant, horribly ineffective.

The problem wasn't the game plan, it is much deeper than that. The problem is English Rugby, we believe the Premiership is the best rugby League in the World but it isn't any longer. Like cricket years back and Football now the need to succeed exceeds the need to provide players for the international teams. Down to just 11 teams all riddled with foreign stars the choice and the competition for England starts is low... we lack options at prop, at hooker, at scrum half, at stand off, especially at Centre. Hence the need to pick players who years ago would never have seen an England jersey... something needs to happen at the heart of rugby, forget this World Cup, we are light years away and have six month AND no competitive games before the first game in the World cup, start now for four years time, start changing the rules for the Premiership along the lines of the Irish or French, and remember... the under 20's also got thumped by France so the next generation hasn't much of a start.

Eddie bell5182. Agree with all your points, especially the foreign (residential qualifiers🙄?) players. Was a member at Bath for c15 years(1988-2003). Saw the first “imports”, and it could’ve been argued that there was no damage. However that soon changed. It was gradual, but my mate and I both said if we were aspiring Academy players, it would tick us off to see our playing pathway blocked by in many cases not terribly good foreigners? So incentives diluted. No “A” league now,and mainly Prem Cup or farmed out somewhere on dual contracts. So further dilution of incentives. Forget the past X number of coaches, and the apparent shambles of the Prem/RFU, I think the rot started with players coming in without quotas? Or I believe there were limitations, but these were quickly kicked into the long grass?
Finally, coaches have beaten the rugby “nouse” out of so many players, that showing skills that don’t fit with a coach(s) game plan, is considered grounds enough to be dumped.

Lots of people saying it’s unfair to criticise Smith and that we didn’t have a game plan. I completely disagree. England was in chaos after EJ so Borthwick came in to steady the ship. He’s had 3 games where he’s laid some basic foundations and although England are fairly dull he’s got a few things back on track. And then for this game he drops a consistent Owen Farrell for Mr flashy balls and clearly wants England to play a faster game plan. Not a very Borthwick thing to do, I would like to know who persuaded him. It’s the first big test for a new setup and he completely changes tac. Makes no sense.
The faster game plan was most likely to get the big French forwards moving around the park but it failed because Englands backs were only playing fast against the French backs. A fast game plan needs to include the whole team if you want to tire out their forwards.
We’ve got much bigger problems than who plays 10 but Smith was terrible. I really don’t see the fuss. He’s like the little brother tagging along to a party. He made some huge mistakes and he’s rubbish in defence. If Farrell had played like that he would get slated by everyone. I wouldn’t even have Smith in the squad.

We need to continue with a game plan like Saturday but get better at it. We are still slow at the ruck and the scrum half has to take responsibility for fast ball. It would not have mattered who played 10 when he was constantly getting the ball on the back foot. The forwards need to drive past the ruck not stop at it. This all about good coaching and they need time as well.

Eng are good at not having succession plans (and Eddie didn't put one in place). We have the players, but it will take a good 3-5yrs to get a consistent side with rugby nous..I remember alot of the Irish side were just alright last world cup..it takes specific planning and nuturing of players in a consistent environment to gey your team playing well..and going back to the 76-0 drubbing we took...some of those players went on to win the world cup.

Going forward to Dublin on St Patrick's Day, Borthwick will have no choice but to strengthen the defence first, and forget about attack. Defence, defence, defence. That unfortunately means Smith misses out, Farrell starts, Malins goes as he was a turnstile, and Steward absolutely must go. Stewards defence is woeful, he cost 3 tries v Scotland, probably 3 more v France. Steward is slow, always out of position and makes bad defensive read after bad defensive read.

A lot of this is a legacy of Eddie Jones and his inability to formulate a clear strategy and his retention of his favourites for far too long. Borthwick seems to be making some of the same mistakes, sticking with great players who are past their sell by date, but he does seem willing to blood new players. However, the new players who are being introduced have not had experience in the past because Eddie has stuck to his old guard.
Also, England lack pace. Dombrandt in particular hasn't got it at this level. George is probably past his best, yet no-one seems prepared to look at Harry Thacker, who has been brilliant for Bristol. He's the sort of jack in the box player who adds huge mobility, speed and power.
But fundamentally, France were utterly brilliant.

Bit of a freak result, everything that could go well for France went that way (two bounces of the ball on two tries for example) and everything that could go bad for England well, went worse. France was probably always going to win this game but the score is a statistic anomaly.
Also, I was really surprised by England's decision not to take the points at 0-10, I thought it was poor thinking. Granted being 10 points down after 10 minutes and conceding a try with not 2 mins on the clock isn't the way you want to start one of the biggest home games of the season, but there was still plenty of rugby to be played and no need to panic at that point. They needed to get points on the board and reduce the gap. In the last 15mn then OK you go all out to try and cross the line but there was no such urge then. Lack of cold blood.

He is a successful player in the Premiership, first because he has a team that is geaared to support him and second because the Premiership is not the benchmark for excellence. EJ failed to lay the basis of a successful team (as was done for him by his predecessor) and the delay in sacking him left Borthwich with a plate of Lenten pancakes rather than a full pantry. From Ireland here. England's traditional strength was up the center, marauding forwards who'd bash their way, phase by phase, creeping into the opponents half. Then they'd release the backs when enough gaps had opened. Fast and fluent. Now they're all gung-ho on complicating the shit out of players in positions they don't normally play and over-complicated set-piece moves. England need to go back to their roots, which is brutal, up-front rugby. Borthwick needs to start with his forwards again, and off that platform, set up a proper back line with players doing what they normally do for their clubs, week in and out. After that, England will do what they do best and results like this one can be chalked down to a badly timed transition period. Hope Old Wickles gets it sorted for the WC.

Ok, the players take responsibility for how BADLY they played, but how could this England coach get the selection and strategy so COMPLETELY wrong? He'll be blaming the weather next, ooops he already threw slippery ball in as well.
Also, Borthwick's post match rabbit-blinded-in-the-headlight reaction was just bewildering, naive and totally unprofessional. Blaming the French for "not allowing us to play". WTF?
England need a wholesale shake-up from schools to clubs to national team, a proper in depth examination of what is going so wrong with English rugby. Start by looking at the French and the Irish models.
Then after the Ireland match, the first to go is the England coach to be replaced with someone of proven international experience rather than a second rate, second row has-been.

The English players just aren't as good. It's as simple as that, however unwelcome a conclusion it may be. At their best under Eddie, England's gameplan was so tightly constructed and the players so tactically well-drilled that individual talent became basically irrelevant (the same was true of Wales at their previous height under Gatland). In trying to play a more organic, high-tempo, heads-up style Borthwick has run hard up against his own squads limitations, the poor athletic standards of the Premiership and the rigid, almost dogmatic attitude of rugby administrators in England, who've consistently favored size, versatility and coachability over talent when selecting for age-group and development-level places.

In some ways it is an echo of your beloved and vacuous class system. Players were picked (contracted) because they met the expectations of crusty, booze-hazy forgettables. Your entire Rugby History should be summed up as 'Could Do Better'. Rugby IS what happens between set-pieces by a team of question-posers which is in fact a team. However England cannot avoid the sycophant trap and inflate the player's egos till they become concrete blocks which Les Galles (et al) like to visit occasionally as tourists.

Yes Eng did make a lot of mistakes together with inaccuracy. Yet teams like Eng. , Wales, Ireland, NZ, Aust. and Japan have all adopted to combine quality rugby with cheating rugby and they to often get away with it because of cheating referees. But then comes the day when a ref does not allow cheating rugby then they lose up to 40% of their fire power.
NZ have been getting away with this cheating attitude and their coaches taught it to different teams. Graeme Henry, W.Gatland and W. Pivac to Wales, Joe Schmidt to Ireland, Dave Rennie to Aust., Jamie Joseph to Japan and E. Jones to England.
For example W Cup 2019 Eng beat NZ by in 1st half made 29 penalize able mistakes and were only penalized once by Nigel Owens. Second half the same. Eng had a total misconception of their ability.
So in final when Jerome Garcias ref cut out their cheating they were completely out of their stride losing their biggest fire power.
Remember v NZ in the ruck just before Tu'ilagis try, Curry and Itoje dived in from the side, not support own weight, six reasons why Eng should have been penalized. Do you also remember how Ireland and Scotland lost to Japan through Jamie Josephs scandalous cheating rugby where he outsmarted even Joe Schmidt due to corrupt refereeing !!!
Does coaches, bookies and others with money collaborate behind closed doors ?
Or can it be done without money. Definately. Take Wales v SA year 2021. Three from NZ conspired before the match to sink SA. Graham Mourie, Chairman of W Rugby referee appointments, Wayne Pivac coach Wales, Paul Williams ref. Within first 8 minutes Wales made 19 penalize able mistakes and weren't penalized once.
This year against Italy, Eng scored 3 tries after players had entered behind line-out jumpers back - obstruction- cheating refereeing !!! Against France the first time Sinckler did it ref B. O'Keeffe blew Eng. and Borthwick's cheating rugby to pieces and GONE WERE THE DANCING DAYS ENGLAND!!

Well, it doesn’t matter what game plan you have and what players play if so many schoolboy errors riddle the performance. After that we didn’t compete at the breakdown and looked second class in that area. Our pack actually weighed more than the French so we should not have been outmuscled, but we were. Set pieces were generally okay but it isn’t very often that you get a score from those, just a starting point. Therefore the question is why did we appear to play so badly? Well, and I’m not trying to hide our faults, but the referee did seem to miss a number of illegal French moves at breakdowns whilst penalising England for theirs. However, that doesn’t alter the fact that we were woefully outplayed here, so have we the players or the coaches? The latter have been dropped into having to take on their roles a year before they anticipated and on the back of poor performances, so expecting a complete turnaround is ridiculous. We had seen improvements but they appeared to want to change the style of play and selected accordingly, but didn’t! The scrum half was so slow my granny could have got the ball out quicker, and she’s been dead for years, Mitchell made an impact but by then it was all too late and the tide had gone out. The forwards appeared not to be able to play against a world class French scrum. So, have we the players, I’m not qualified to answer that (unlike so many who think they could coach England), I’ll only observe that English club rugby is in a bad state, and going forward why oh why do we retain this ridiculous situation that foreign based players can’t play…do England football team do that! Did Eddie Jones make the best of a bad job? I think we must brace ourselves for next Saturday and for the World Cup; we’re fortunate to be in the easier half of the draw there and might get so far but are unlikely to feature in the latter stages. My hope is that we look to 2027 and start working towards that now, if Ireland can reach number 1 in the world then why can’t we? Get on with sorting out our game and stop worrying about changing the laws on tackling!
