KyoAni did announce a new anime project for Hibike, but is before the arson attack and covid. I'm fully confident its still going to happen but I think KyoAni's just getting back on their feet so it might take a while.
While this film is indeed very fast-paced and it would've been great to have more time with some of the characters, it's important to remember that Liz and the Blue Bird is also part of the adaptation of Kumiko's second year, and thus an extension to the story of this school year. Liz covered a whole arc that would have been part of the theoretical one-cour season adaptation if this year was made into a TV show instead of two films. This movie did not focus on the third years (Mizore, Nozomi, Yuuko, Natsuki) as much because their presence in this year was mostly all in the material Liz covered. That is where we got to spend the time with those characters that they very much deserved to have. To put it another way, if Kyoani adapted this second year into another season similar to the previous two, we probably would not have gotten Liz and the Blue Bird as we did, a masterful film dedicated solely to a specific conflict/relationship dynamic and executed to perfection in a whole different style.
I don’t know why but just that little interaction Kumiko and Asuka had before the performance with the „ara Kumiko-Chan, did you miss me that much?“ and her just going „yeah I did“ , I LOVE IT SO MUCH! Edit: also, if you look closely, at around 25:47 you can see Jacob‘s soul slowly leaving his body
In the competition results at 1:30:40 in the movie, you can see the awards. Out of the 22 schools, I can see 11 Gold awards (金), 8 Silver awards (銀), 3 Bronze awards (銅).
So this actually does adapt only one book which covered the entire second year in Kumiko's perspective unlike the first year which was three books. So a bit faster pace even in the books compare to the other ones. Also fun fact that third year Tomoe Kabe who helped instruct the first years with Kumiko was actually properly introduced in the book this movie was based on. That was because she was an anime original character starting in the first season just as a minor character. I'm guessing the author decided to add her officially in this book to create an interesting dynamic for Kumiko. Lastly there is two books covering Kumiko's final year so we at least going to either get one more season or two movies. Just depends how they do it but it will come just a matter of when and to be honest I can wait.
For those who love Natsuki Nakawaga, it' s been announced a spin-off novel about her. I mean, a light novel that will show her perspective of her last year at kitauji.
This film again portrays Kumiko's point of view, as in the previous anime series while Liz and the Blue Bird is an objective portrait of Nozomi and Mizore. At the beginning of the film, Shuichi confesses his feelings to Kumiko and the camera focuses on Kumiko's eyes, suggesting that the film will once again be portrayed from her point of view. Kumiko and her friends move on to the next grade, and a new Kita Uji High School wind ensemble club starts up under the leadership of Yuko and Natsuki. When Yuko re-writes this year's goal of getting gold at the national competition, an unpleasant noise comes from the blackboard. This is a hint at the difficulty of achieving gold at nationals. This film, driven by the new students, reiterates to the audience the universal and difficult-to-answer questions that the Euphos have shown so far. Will effort be rewarded, is effort without result futile, is it the process or the result that matters? Kanade is going through similar struggles as Mirei. Regarding the piece, Liz and the Blue Bird, Natsuki suggests she and Kanade play the same part while Kumiko will play the high tones. This means that there is a chance that one of them will be excluded from the performance. She is afraid of the reaction of the upperclassmen, because she is a first-year student, while the third-year students cannot participate in the contest. Kanade is also working hard, but she thinks her hard work is not required; she is not required to compete against third-year students. Thus, she intentionally dislikes or at least pretends to Natsuki. She acts selfishly and makes people have a negative impression of her. Kumiko finally realises her true feelings and tells Kanade what she has been working so hard for. She declares that no one in the club would deny how hard Kanade make an effort. She puts Kanade in the place of her past self, who didn't know how to work hard and didn't see the point in working hard, and now Kumiko tells her that even though working hard doesn't always pay off, it's never in vain. By being embraced by Natsuki, who rebuffed her pity and exploded with anger, and Kumiko, who got soaking wet with her and vented the same fears and anxieties, she was able to throw herself into the light that lies beyond the horizon of winning and losing. In this way, Kanade was able to regain her relationship with Natsuki, which she was able to resonate with Happy Ice Cream. Incidentally, when Natsuki enters the music room to interrupt Kanade's audition, the door of the music room opens smoothly. In fact, the door was poorly set up, and when Kumiko and Taki had tried to open it before, it had gotten stuck. When Natsuki opens it, it works properly. It is a presentation that shows how serious she is and how much power she used to open the door. It is not only the 55 students who have been chosen as performing members who have worked hard, but the others who couldn't make it to the place where they can compete, and Kabe-chan senpai who turned into a manager in the middle of the show. If you look at Kabe-chan, who has worked so hard and exhausted herself to the point of falling asleep, and who has worked so hard to provide guidance to each new student, it is clear that this is the case. Each of them is working hard in their own way. There is no such thing as superiority or inferiority. In the story of a club aiming for the national gold medal, those who fail to achieve it are never portrayed as minor. The film concludes with Kanade reaching the point where Kumiko cries and as she runs with frustration, so winning is not the only thing that counts. Some have lost, some have given up, some have lost their way, one has admitted to insurmountable barriers between them and their talented friends, and one has decided to keep playing the oboe that has brought them together, even though they know they can no longer be together. Amid events that are often judged as worthless, there is an overwhelming effort and truth, and it is all beautiful and precious. This can be seen in Yuko's speech, where she never showed her tears in front of anyone except Natsuki. Not only in animation but also in the film, it is not allowed to show things that are not necessary. However, in this film, all the settings are left unanswered. What is the meaning of the sunflower postcard that Asuka gives Kumiko, calling it a "magic ticket"? What does the sunflower suggest? What does it mean that Asuka, who stubbornly refused to open her heart to Kaori, now wears a dress with the same design as Kaori's and even a matching ring? What will happen to Shuichi and Kumiko's relationship? What will happen to the relationship between Reina and Kumiko? I hope that these unresolved dissonances will be resolved in the sequel and become a consensus.
Unfortunately, I could not post my full analysis here as some phrases or topic are not allowed by filters or something. Thus, there are some flaws and a lack of discussion. Anyways, thank you for reading my reviews throughout the series.

I loved re-watching the movie with you guys! You are way TOO funny! For those who think the movie was too short and too fast, i HIGHLY recommend listening to the 5th anniversary CD drama. It gives a lot of context for the movie, for example about shuuicho and Kumiko's relationship. Also you can find the former 2nd years' graduation. My favorite part of the movie was the one up the mountain... the quality is beyond description. In 4 years kyoani improved WAY TOO MUCH. I mean, you can actually see the concret buildings! The colors, reina's dress and the fact she is playing mizore's solo...everything. i loved it. I can't wait too see one last scene on Mt daikishiyama in the 3rd season, i know it will be GORGEOUS.
saw this movie by myself in theaters when it came out. there were like a total of 10 people in the room and it was the chillest experience ive ever had at the movies.
OMG I just finished S3 and check out here, why they still stock at this movie, will they complete it all? I remember that they did enjoy the show so much, right?!
Thank you guys for reacting to this, one of my favourite shows of all time. Now I kinda wanna see a Carole and Tuesday reaction from u guys, but no rush. Keep it up guys! cheers!!
This only covered one book and that book covered Kumiko second year, so a movie was expected. The first two seasons covered three books. My guess is that we will get one more season that covers the last two books of Kumiko's third year.
NOTE 2 Q: How difficult is it to get through the Kansai tournament and advance to the nationals? A: For high schools in the Kansai region (the area that includes Kyoto, Kobe, and Nara), the wall to the national competition are very high. The reason is that 3 schools, the same number as in the anime, are chosen to represent the Kansai region in the All Japan Band Competition. For the past 11 consecutive competitions (since 2011!), schools in Osaka have dominated the competition.
To be quite honest I think this movie would have benefited from being a tad bit longer to completely flesh out the new additional characters, or like to the length of a 6-7 episode arc maybe. Nonetheless it still did a pretty good job at conveying the messages it wanted to and it is always a treat to see your favorite characters act like your favorite characters. When I first watched this show I was in kind of a phase where I would literally finish an entire anime in the span of 3 days at max and immediately move on to the next, but after watching this I quite literally fell into an "after-series-sadness/emptyness" for the first time in a long time and I couldn't get this out of my head for and haven't started any anime after this for 3 weeks. This is one of those shows that I connected with so much that it made me actively try to change and improve at least SOMETHING about myself, even if just the tiniest of tiniest of things. Even now two years (I think) after my first watch Kumiko is still the character that I relate to the most in all of fiction and whenever I am in a slump I can always find comfort in rewatching a few scenes of or even just thinking about this show. It will forever be one of my favorite shows ever and I am so glad you reacted to and loved it so much, and maybe even brought in new fans. This is one that truly deserves to be called a masterpiece and it NEEDS to be watched by more people. Here's to the hope of season 3 coming sooner rather than later, or later rather than never, so we can see Kumiko and the rest of the girls in all their 3rd year glory ^^
I am really curious as to how they are going to handle the characterization for next year's characters, cuz we only know a few of the 2nd years ,and not deeply at that, plus the new 1st years. I do believe that they'll do a great job, though.
🏅 the number of dud gold medals In the real Kansai Concert Band Competition, 24 schools, selected from 500 schools in the Kansai area, participate and 8 schools of which award gold medals. As there are 3 quotas for Kansai representatives in the All Japan Concert Band Competition, 5 schools are awarded dud Gold.
I want to see the conclusion to this story: how Kumiko leads the club, the entire band plays Sound! Euphonium and Kitauji wins gold in national. They can't let it ends here.
Kakushigoto next!? Let's fucking goooo! This'll be a nice introduction to Kumeta's greatness, hopefully we'll see in the future a Zetsubou Sensei reaction too.
I agree that the movie was beautiful but also very fast paced, which was sadly unavoidable when you have to cram at least a seasons worth of content and characters into 90 minutes. That's why, when I was watching it the first time, the new characters stories also didn't hit me that much but rather meeting Asuka, Kaori and Haruka again was one of my favorite scenes of the movie. When they will eventually be able to do a season 3, I hope we get more of Kanade, Mirei, Sacchan, Motomu etc. and not put them aside already in favor of new first years yet again.
Honestly, I felt that this movie is the worst part of the Hibike Euphonium anime. It felt way too quick as they jumped through so much time. It felt like we got the highlight reel of the character's arcs rather watching them develop. That said, KyoAni still pulls it off by being efficient as hell. It may have felt like highlights, but it still managed to make me empathize with the characters and tear up at times. All the emotions still managed to hit home. So, let it be known that worst of the Hibike Euphonium franchise is still a 9/10 in my books.
I am here to inform you about the new series. One is a movie version of a side story. That will be a story that focuses on characters other than Kumiko and the others, and it will be released on August 4, 2023. Then we will see Kumiko as a third year student in the TV series in 2024.
It's hardly a clear-cut comparison, but I consider Crescent Moon Dance a more challenging competition piece than Liz and the Blue Bird. Liz opens the band's sound up to closer examination with its extensive use of solo work, but at the same time it's easier to showcase your star soloists rather than let the judges hear an entire section's sound. Crescent Moon Dance puts entire sections to work in technically vulnerable moments. Crescent Moon Dance is also quite heavily mixed-meter and has generally odd melodic pacing, which both require additional attention by the performers. My suspicion is that Kitauji doesn't qualify for nationals because the judges considered their free-choice selection too easy compared to the choices of their competitors. It is, of course, not an "easy" piece by most standards, but it's not quite where you would expect for a band aiming to get gold at nationals. Yuuko's assertion that this was their "best performance ever" strengthens that suspicion. The other possibility, of course, is that the competition simply got that much better (for example, Ryuusei High School's meteoric rise to nationals, taking the final qualifying spot at the Kansai competition). In either case, Kitauji did an incredible job and Yuuko rightly motivates them to be proud of their work this year and to reach even further next year.
I am not a Yuri lover or even much of a fan for that matter so I am not saying this as a Kumiko X Reina or Asuka shipper but this movie and its Kumiko X Shuichi ending always bugs me. I KNOW that the novel gave much more development to this pair and made it more clear that Kumiko also has feelings for Shuichi BUT Kyoani COMPLETELY CHANGED THAT. For the entirety of the two seasons Kumiko barely even gave a shit about Shuichi let alone showing romantic interest for him and then suddenly this movie came and THEY ARE A COUPLE. It just feels weird, rushed and unfulfilling. If they were going to make them a couple then they should have put more focus into it during the two seasons and since they didn't, they shouldn't waste time with this weird romance in this movie which already had a problem of being rushed.
It's been indicated from the beginning that the two are very close to each other since they're childhood friends and that they have a certain level of comfortability with each other. The way Kumiko reacts to him in this spiteful manner and stuff like going "eurgh, this guy again" you can only get away with if you have a close enough relationship. If you don't and you do that to a complete stranger basically or even someone you are not particularly close with it'd be incredibly rude, and we all know Kumiko is definitely not the type of person to be rude. It perfectly made sense when watching for the first time that these two'll get together and it still does now, you just gotta have to pick up on the subtleties and know your way around actual human relationships And if you still want more focus on their relationship to make more sense out of it, apparently there's a drama cd for the 5th anniversary of the show gving more context to a lot of stuff in the movie, including this.
Nah the novel does not THAT indicate those two's relationship either. Shuichi has always been air, and suddenly he's Kumiko's bf. It feels so forced ngl
Kumiko: Kuyashii? (Frustrated?) Kanade: kuyashii desu... (Really frustrated...) kuyashii kute shinu so desu! (It's so frustrating I want to die!) Damn, they really did beat the phrase 悔しい into my brain throughout the series and I'm never forgetting it XD There was an announcement made by KyoAni about a continuation to this very movie back in June 1st 2019, and as we all know, the arson incident happened about a month after on July 18th 2019. So yeah, absolutely understandable how the whole thing hasn't really been updated to us for the time being. Then again, with Dragon Maid S2 being reannounced just 3 months before airing (First time was also just before the incident), so I can see us getting a surprise announcement of S3 anytime in the next year tbh. I will say, KyoAni had released the Violet Evergarden OVA-movie and also the finale movie over the past two years, so in a way they have been back since last year. So, the Hibike reactions end and Kakushigoto starts? Sure I guess. A good B+ show, only one cour as well. Fate rolled a 13 on this one. Another KyoAni show would be a 20, but a 13 is fine. i wonder what kind of roll Re:Zero's replacement will be.

Looking forward for S3 in April, also there’s a small arch last year.

News!!! Season 3 confirmed!!l airing in 2024 according to Kyoani's official TH-cam Channel.
I am here to inform you about the new series.
One is a movie version of a side story. That will be a story that focuses on characters other than Kumiko and the others, and it will be released on August 4, 2023.
Then we will see Kumiko as a third year student in the TV series in 2024.
Whaaat, Kakushigoto is next!? Cant wait!
It perfectly made sense when watching for the first time that these two'll get together and it still does now, you just gotta have to pick up on the subtleties and know your way around actual human relationships
And if you still want more focus on their relationship to make more sense out of it, apparently there's a drama cd for the 5th anniversary of the show gving more context to a lot of stuff in the movie, including this.
Nah the novel does not THAT indicate those two's relationship either. Shuichi has always been air, and suddenly he's Kumiko's bf. It feels so forced ngl
Kumiko: Kuyashii? (Frustrated?)
Kanade:
kuyashii desu... (Really frustrated...)
kuyashii kute shinu so desu! (It's so frustrating I want to die!)
Damn, they really did beat the phrase 悔しい into my brain throughout the series and I'm never forgetting it XD
There was an announcement made by KyoAni about a continuation to this very movie back in June 1st 2019, and as we all know, the arson incident happened about a month after on July 18th 2019.
So yeah, absolutely understandable how the whole thing hasn't really been updated to us for the time being.
Then again, with Dragon Maid S2 being reannounced just 3 months before airing (First time was also just before the incident),
so I can see us getting a surprise announcement of S3 anytime in the next year tbh.
Another KyoAni show would be a 20, but a 13 is fine.
i wonder what kind of roll Re:Zero's replacement will be.
you mispelled the japanese dialogue
Next season is uncertain because the Euponium producer died of arson.
Kyoani recently said they are still working on it... they haven't given up, neither shall we!!
Still waiting for Hyouka. I hope they pick it after OreGairu
